Herne

Unlike his fellow Nocturnes hatched after the Winter Solstice, Herne found his way to Excursio's clan of his own accord. Frustrated by the desolate surroundings of the Shifting Expanse, Herne quickly shook off the remaining fragments of his egg and set off for greener pastures - literally. When Baikal found him at the oasis one morning, he was nestled happily in the center of an aloe plant, blithely ignoring the spines of his newfound resting place.

Since his arrival, Herne has rarely left the garden. He built a small cave for himself out of the native sandstone, tucked away on a ledge and hidden from all but the keenest of observers. There, he sleeps through the heat of the day, emerging in the evening to help Baikal and Amira with their gardening projects.

Herne took to Amira as a hatchling and began to mimic her when she visited the lair; her stoicism and blunt way of speaking accentuated Herne's already down-to-earth personality. Herne rarely talks, and prefers to observe from afar, blending in with his beloved plants until he decides the time is right for him to speak or act. He has a literal sense of humor and is not fond of wordplay, leading him to have a love-hate relationship with Baikal, the garden's other permanent resident. His best friend and companion is Lyra, who ignores his grumpy moods and is the only dragon who can always make him crack a smile.
