 While wandering the Rotrock Rim, a young spiral comes across a massive heap of rotten flesh and bones. The mess might have once been a dragon. Surely it isn't alive anymore.

And yet...

The spiral drifts too close and the thing trembles, a rumbling snarl reverberating at its core. The thing's milky white eyes are open, searching, but unseeing. It lurches to its feet, tattered wings digging into the muck on the ground to keep it upright.

"Wherrrrre are you," it snarls, swinging its great head to and fro.

The spiral can hear it snuffling raspily. It takes one step forward, then another, and another, faster and faster, homing in on its prey. The slender dragon twists about, trips over its own tail, and tumbles downhill in a knotted heap. The monster falls after it, crashing at the bottom with a cacophony of bone snaps.

Blessedly, the spiral escapes unscathed, scrabbling out of the way at the last second.

While the monster struggles to get up on newly broken limbs, the spiral frantically pulls at itself, untangling its coils so that it can get back into the air and away. But the more it struggles, the more it seems there are more knots, more tangles, and time seems to slow, and it just feels so tired...

"Sleep," a softer voice tells the spiral. "The beast won't notice you if you would only go to sleep..."

It seems so much easier to just lay its head down amid the mushrooms. The monster's bones crackle as it drags itself up. The spiral is already asleep, safe from its notice.

But perhaps not so safe from the monster's keeper.
