The pale Pearlcatcher was born blind. It was not that her eyes were damaged- they were simply not there at all. In a more superstitious clan, or one less accustomed to physical oddities, this defect might have spelled her doom, but Vitra was allowed to grow and encouraged to pursue whatever she took an interest in.
Her calling turned out to be the clan's nesting grounds. She was deeply protective and concerned for the health of every egg laid in Redwood Reach; furthermore, she displayed an uncanny gift for predicting the outcome of the hatchling inside. Though she couldn't tell you what it meant for a dragon to have Midnight scales or Freckled wings, if such a dragon was due to hatch, the sightless Pearlcatcher would know.
