"We used to ask what was to be offered in exchange for services. That's over. Now we just take something. Better hope it's not something you need."
❁ STORY
There is a mist that hangs around the canyon sometimes. It’s seen mostly at night and many claim to have seen it rise from the prairie and dance along the docks, glittering with unnatural light, sparkling like stars fallen to the earth. The mist spreads and fades in ways that mist shouldn’t, and the lights dance with a life all their own. It’s always very localised, never spreading far and bound to its creator, seen only occasionally and never twice. It’s a warning no one ever gives in the lair, but unlike the stars that sometimes shoot across the sky, do not ever make a wish on these. There’s no telling what it might cost. Yolmir’s is a pleasant dragon, all warm smiles and soft laughter. Fond of how music fills the summer air, the little lanterns Lotus hangs about the lair, the smells from Osprey’s garden or Xehr’s cooking when she lets herself get carried away. They're friendly and kind and although reclusive and shy, happy to make friends and listen to others. They are also dreadfully hard to pin down, often whispering away as if made of mist themselves. It’s probably for the best. Yolmir is one of few creatures capable of granting wishes, any wishes. For a price. Although a price is never discussed, simply taken. Unwary visitors have lost memories, family, purposes, limbs, senses and souls in making uninformed wishes of Yolmir. A tricky, unpredictable individual, sometimes Yolmir even leads guests astray just for the amusement of it (especially those of questionable morals). And there are so many places in the Reliquary where outsiders should never step. This mischief often sees Dribble chasing after the lights through the forest, requesting to play a game or a prank. Ji Qeng occasionally makes use of a loose friendship with Yolmir also; it’s much easier to get a good deal when the buyer loses some part of themselves to the lair. After all, Yolmir is just another kind of merchant: selling dreams for pieces of hearts and souls. With a bright smile and cheerful persona, no one would ever think that Yolmir was anything other than another friendly local. But anyone who follows them might end up on the business end of one of Tarryn's pirrik, robbed blind by Chevron, dragged beneath the waves by Ellander, or something worse, perhaps. Yolmir has little care for most of those who travel through the lair and often even the residents worry that they have no sense of empathy for others (strangers turned their last lair into a place where even someone with a fey-esque nature felt an outsider, hence Yolmir’s innate suspicion of the lair’s guests). But Yolmir does feel and knows how fearful some can be of their magic, so there's always a little sorrow in their smiles, a little resignation in their laughter, a little melancholy tinging the mists on a starry evening. Yolmir doesn't mean anyone harm unless they deserve it. Those who seek to make use of wish magic for their own gain, for instance. And even though there's a disconnect between them and the other residents that hasn't quite been bridged properly yet, Yolmir will dispose of anyone who hints at hurting their unwitting family. And there's really nothing anyone can do to stop them. ❁ OTHER
