STORY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Initially brought into the clan by Venin to act as a sounding board for ideas, Winter proved to be by turns excellent and spectacularly awful at the task. While his mind is definitely equipped to solve problems – and he enjoys challenges of that variety – he also has rather too much to think about at any given time.

Winter just likes to ask questions. And he likes to be asked them as well. Questions are his passion. He likes to think about things, to solve things, to have a real mind-bender to turn over and over and over and inspect and examine and pull apart so he can put it back together again. He gets a thrill from solving problems, from finding solutions. He thoroughly enjoyed trying to find an efficient way of storing perishable foods and mapping out a practical way of housing the growing numbers of their clan (that one didn’t work as intended because the diggers moved ahead without waiting for his specifications).

Beyond having a rather useful purpose (on and off) in the clan by serving as Kieri's and the council's willing ear, he also just really enjoys puzzles. Hypotheticals, theology, trick questions, things that lack obvious answers – or answers at all, to be honest – are all equally stimulating to Winter. Consequently he spends a good deal of his time hanging out with the other ‘intellectuals’ of the lair; notably Helix and Pencil. Although they both sometimes find his company grating because he swings from mostly silent to jabbering at a million words per minute in less than a second; which is quite draining, thank you.

Tahvi and Jaelyr both enjoy his company for the same reason (weirdly enough): translating dead languages. Something about them is like a puzzle and Winter is so fond of those. So the three of them (and sometimes Kairos) spend hours poring over ancient scrolls and tablets. Languages are a fairly new hobby of his, he mostly leaves them to Jaelyr, who is the specialist after all, but he can hardly be blamed for enjoying the challenge. He and Jae sometimes come up with cyphers and codes for the clan to use when sending sensitive information via mail. It’s quite thrilling, he finds.

He often gets asked questions by the clan’s council that are a little outside his forte. Most specifically, working with Daeddrin and Norok and Greymarch on the defence of the clan. He knows – admittedly – very little about combat of any kind, and while he and Grey are friends (sort of) he finds Norok and Daeddrin a little too enthusiastic about battle for his liking (he has a delicate stomach). He’s often posed political or economic dilemmas by the Assembly too; those he’s much better at. But he does tend to spiral into ifs and maybes if left at it for too long. It takes a little prodding to get him back on track. In actuality, despite his official position on the council, he’s rarely in attendance.

There are too many questions to answer for him to be getting side-tracked like that.

OTHER

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ORIGIN / From the Snowsquall Tundra, Winter’s clan valued strength, as most do who live in such a harsh environment. Displaying no talent or interest in combat (not even for self-defence) so he remained an introverted, isolated dragon during his time there. And when his best friend betrayed him, arranging for the clan to have him executed for his ‘worthless’ academic skills, he had to flee. His family didn’t help, theirs was the ultimate betrayal; instead of helping him escape his fate they tried to trick him. He made it away by the smallest of margins, and while he wandered, aimless and without anyone to rely on, he found many dragons would use him if they could.

Fact / Pencil grudgingly admitted him to her short-list of library visitors after Winter brought her some ancient scrolls on the creation of Emperors. Venin doesn’t like having something so dangerous in the lair, but Winter and Pencil are both too fascinated by the information it contains to hear out his arguments. The council also seems willing to leave them be much to Venin's dismay. But whatever. When scholars end the world again he'll get to say he told them so.

Likes / Anything involving bizarre and/or obscure theories regarding literally any topic ever, questions of any sort (though preferably the complex and unsolvable kind) and other sorts of mental challenges or tasks that involve a little lateral thinking.

Dislikes / He particularly dislikes when he’s posed a question and someone expects an immediate response, it’s irritating, don’t they know a proper reply takes thought? He also has a whole heap of interlocked metal ring puzzles that he fiddles with while thinking, sometimes they ‘go missing’ and he doesn’t like it, they’re very soothing.

Interests / He sometimes accompanies Grey on his excursions, especially if they take him toward the Hewn City or the Observatory. There are so many scrolls with knowledge in them and he loves to go looking through ruins. Sometimes he goes with Tahvi on her adventures too, she's very good at finding lost things and he appreciates that so much. So much.
