❁ STORY

Pencil left her birth clan, wherever it is, due entirely to how they treat books. Or rather, how they don’t. She’s from a place where learning and knowledge is not very highly valued, where tomes themselves might be used as doorstops as much as for actual reading. It was truly sacrilegious, she thinks, and so she left; in search of a clan more to her tastes.

She didn’t find it. Somehow (and everyone blames Bereave), she ended up storing her things at the Reliquary and establishing their library. It’s one of the best in Sornieth and she’s not too humble to tell anyone who asks. Even Pencil isn’t completely sure why she bothered staying; most of the dragons in the Reliquary care little for reading, though at least they don’t use books as doormats. She still thinks they’re all illiterate idiots, though. Or at least dirty idiots. Tarryn always tries to visit the library with vials of her magic ooze getting everything wet and sticky, Tahvi is constantly trekking sand everywhere and Daeddrin never puts books back where he found them.

Consequently, her library is off limits. A gifted caster, Pencil’s magic is used almost exclusively for placing seals of protection on all her books. She renews them frequently to make sure her books don’t end up dog-eared. There are also multiple detection charms around the entrance to the library. One across the outer set of great double doors keeps the library locked to all but those who wear the necessary charms (hers is a pair of seeing glasses etched with the required runes), another on the floor before the second set of doors detects for the magical passes she hands out to the select few individuals allowed inside. Within the library are more spells designed to alert her to intruders (they go off most frequently to announce Dribblerawr or Callana). She also has a series of magical winged tomes that keep her books safe. She’s been meaning to invest in some library golems, but also she doesn’t particularly want to talk to Tahvi about it. She might try and wrangle access to the library in exchange. And Pen really does not want her sandy mitts on any books.

Pencil is, paws down, the most widely read dragon in the lair. Her vocabulary is astounding and she has a very inflated sense of self-importance because of this. There are very few dragons she considers worthy of her time. Namely, that’s limited to Helix. (Who is probably the actual reason she stayed.) He’s very kind and thoughtful, gentle and intelligent; he helps with her sorting and makes sure the library is always big enough for her books. He’s truly lovely – a little too excitable – but lovely, she does very much appreciate him. Few other dragons have access to the library. Which is fine, few others can stand her. She’s a bit of a snob, likes to have her opinion heard, is extremely controlling of everything, and looks down on others (less educated than she); her tendency to natter makes her a little wearisome and no one really cares what she has to say.

Except that she’s also always right. Some dragons learned that the hard way. But with her encyclopaedic knowledge of everything ever, that’s not really surprising, is it? The fact that she lords her intelligence over others is infuriating, but she’s not so bad. Not really. She's perfectly polite, has excellent manners (thank you very much) and smiles when she sees Helix (she has a soft spot for him, it's true). So no, she's not all bad. Just a little irritating at times.

ORIGIN / Born on a lightning farm, Pencil remembers her birth clan for its many coils of thick wires and conduits, the sprawling sheds scattered across the dunes, and the single spire lancing the sky, a glittering onyx pillar of metal. Lightning would strike the top of the spire for collection and those who lived and worked in the farms around it would huddle for safety within its hot walls during sandstorms or hurricanes or when raiders came calling. It was a hard place to live, the focus all on survival, on physical labour and long hours beneath the boiling cauldron of a sky. Pencil’s love of books wasn’t appreciated, her desire to learn laughed at, and anyone who overheard her grumbling about illiteracy rates would likely call her a snobby name. Leaving was quite honestly her only option. The Reliquary might not be a clan of academics, but at least they let her start a library.

Fact / It used to be that her familiar, Kyah, was the only familiar allowed in the library. (Kyah likes sleeping on the books.) But recently, Pencil has taken to having those winged books placed on various shelves (only if the title on their spines fits according to whatever system she’s using at the time, though). She’s found they can be trained to protect the other books on the shelves since they seem to share some sort of kinship with even immobile tomes. They’re very good at scaring away unwanted trespassers.

Likes / The smell of new books and the sound of quills on parchment and unstoppering an inkwell for the first time. She likes silence and order and taking care of her books. Her library and its contents are everything to her, and she takes them very seriously. Also fond of learning, Pencil takes great pleasure in knowing exactly where everything in the library is, and what it contains. Access to the library is hardly even necessary when one could ask her the question.

Dislikes / When her library is violated. She really cannot abide folks in her space without permission. They don’t care about her systems, or taking care of the tomes, or order and they get it all dirty and she doesn’t like it. She won’t have it! Pencil doesn’t understand why a dragon wouldn’t want to know how to read and write either, she considers them both very important and dragons who can’t do either (to her standards) are no better than heathens.

Interests / Gosh she likes ordering her books. Every week they’re in a different configuration because sometimes they should be by topic and sometimes by author and sometimes by colour. She has no real interest in anything other than her library, honestly. Though she does enjoy conversations with Jaelyr and Tahvi about languages. They let her add new volumes on translating and speaking other languages which is very exciting. (She’s not a fan of Winter being involved overly much.)
