There are things beneath the waves of the cove that are caught out of the corner of an eye and then lost forever. Stories are told across Sornieth of treasures and relics and power hidden by the foamy breakers of the various seas; the Thousand Currents is said to hold the secrets of the gods but other bodies of water are not without their own folk tales. The northern edge of the Reliquary Canyon is a bay dotted with tall spires of rock that seem to have not noticed the landmass has ended; they form islands and coves that are said to be filled with unusual things, the strange and inexplicable.

The denizens of the Canyon do not doubt these tales.

But they also know better than to seek the treasures they talk of. For the bay of the canyon is guarded by a great leviathan… They think. Sometimes, on a bright day, when the waters of the ocean are still and clear, a shimmering hulk slithers beneath the surface. Poisonous golds and blues that by turns stand out brilliantly against the water and disappear into the backdrop of sandbars and coral. Some guests doubt the existence of this creature and pursue the stories of fortune hidden in the cove’s tall spires. These ill-advised adventurers are rarely heard from again. It’s said their bones join the shipwrecks and the lost.

Ellander typically reveals himself only to the lair’s other unusual residents. His sibling, the wish-granting forest spirit; his mate, the construct of dust that blows away on a stiff breeze; the witches and the uncanny. Osprey and Ravelin speak often and highly of him and Kairos treats him as she might a minor deity – glad he’s on her side, providing fair seas for sailing. Occasionally, however, a guest will whisper about seeing a great shark monster curled on the beach with a scarf of dust and dead grass only when they look again the breeze has whisked away and the only evidence something might have been there before is a fading impression in the damp sand.

That same guest might later hear an unearthly singing. To follow the sound into the ocean is to join the fish forever.

ORIGIN / Ellander left the forested ruins of his home in the Sunbeam ruins – a haven for fey creatures – called by the sea, by the lost bound beneath the waves. He wandered for a long time, following the stories of those trapped by the sea until he found the intricate magics of the Reliquary. He rarely ventures into the trees, but the waters are his now.

Fact / While not a pirate, he has a great rapport with Kairos and has been known to sink raiding pirate ships. Whether to keep the clan safe, because Kairos is his friend, or simply because he likes to acquire more trinkets is unclear. Either way he has created a reputation for being the reason shipwrecks dot the northern coast of Dragonhome. ~~release the kraken~~

Likes / That clear, brisk weather after a storm disappears over the horizon, the music inside shells, the way the whole world changes when you lower your head slowly beneath the waves. He likes the quiet on the ocean floor and the warmth of his boyfriend curled around his neck and sunbaking on empty beaches. He is a simple creature.

Dislikes / Ships disturbing the peaceful surface of the bay. He can’t stand being away from water for too long. On the rare times he heads inland he doesn’t stray far from the rivers. Anyone who casts trash into bodies of water earns his undying hatred. He can find a use for most of it, but he’ll still take the essence of the offending litterer.

Interests / Salvaging. Things go missing (or are cast aside) and sometimes these items have energy, some kind of value that can be used. The clan’s witches have found purpose for some of these trinkets, but others Ellander restores them – chests and carvings and ritual objects – and these can be seen on his islands. They might act as wards, but mostly they just contribute to the legends about objects of power in the region. Which Ellander finds amusing. Not that he’ll complain about the unwitting travellers whose lives become his for wandering into his waters.
