"What you see isn’t always what you get – or what you need. Then again, all things are possible."
❁ STORY
The air is still. Not even the tiniest breeze so much as stirs a grain of sand. Just the barest hint of another dry lightning storm hangs static over the silent dunes. When the first flashes illuminate the peaks of distant mountains, catching the tops of conductive spires in brilliant glittering moments, it becomes a race against time for those wandering the ever-shifting miles of sand to find shelter, lest the wrath of Stormcatcher fall upon the unprepared. The Expanse is unforgiving, a place where only the hardiest can eke out survival, let alone a life, and yet Mossmere managed. Sprung from the desert like just another cactus, Mossmere took root and even flourished; his magic is the kind of thing that was unusual in the lands of the Stormcatcher, where logic and reason tend to take precedence over the inexplicable of magic. And so Mossmere’s oasis – bound to him, part of him, perhaps they are one and the same – was the sort of thing that occasioned comment. Not always the favourable kind. Moss has never really explained why he (and his oasis) packed up and left the Shifting Expanse, but rumours abound that Stormcatcher himself chased him out; too much of Gladekeeper in his magic for the God of Lighting. It’s a good story. The Reliquary might not ever need an oasis for the lost to ride out deadly lightning storms, but there are other, gentler needs. His oasis still exists, a place only accessible by those Mossmere allows entry, those who need it, but now that need is a little different. Now, it’s a place where Osprey can grow new types of plants to meet the needs of the clan’s vegetarians, it’s a place for folks to go if they need a little bit of quiet where no one can find them, it’s a place with healing waters for those who need aid beyond what Fen can give them (the unearthly kind of healing). Many dragons in the Reliquary seek out Mossmere for one reason or another, very few are those he counts as his friends. There are even fewer guests who he tolerates. The problem with being able to provide what folks need means that some seek him out to make pleas, things they claim to need as much as the air they breathe. (This is a plight Yolmir and Shiana both sympathise with.) Unlike Shiana (who simply refuses flat out to grant requests) and Yolmir (who exacts a price the wish-maker might have cause to regret later), Mossmere finds pleasure in doing something… similar to what was asked of him. Should you be hungry for a wheel of cheese? Well here is one too large to carry, or perhaps too small to be filling. You need a companion for your travels? He plucks a snail from his garden and bestows it upon you. You seek riches beyond fathom? Who can possibly fathom the worth of this particular shiny rock. He takes his amusement in distorting the wishes of others more so than causing them actual harm, but he doesn’t take kindly to anger. And to disappear into his oasis is to disappear forever. ❁ OTHER
