"Don’t waste what you’re given."
❁ STORY
Saph was only a few weeks old when she died. Her parents, distraught, took her to the Pillar of the World. Something about that great monolith’s remains, towering above the Shattered Plain, defy time itself and so they reasoned perhaps the Earthshaker can defy time too and give their child a little more. She was buried in the sand on a ridge overlooking the canyon leading to the Pillar and her mother wept over her shallow grave as she prayed to a god not her own. In the end, Saph’s father dragged her mother away, insisting that there are living children who need families, that Plaguebringer frowns on necromancy, even the kind bestowed by a god. Perhaps especially that kind. When Saph awoke later she was not the same. A child still, but not the one her parents had mourned. Not undead in the manner of Lightweaver’s cursed progeny either, this is more like Saph’s second chance. She was found by another dragon; Ralhu helped her, kept her company and took her on adventures, never minding once that little Saph seemed part fossil. Saph’s favourite thing in the whole world is a gloriously bright sweater that Ralhu gave her; it’s too big for such a little dragon, but she doesn’t care. If she tries hard enough, Saph can squeeze into just one sleeve. Ralhu was the one to bring her to the Reliquary. While not possessing much in the way of curious magic herself, Ralhu insisted that Saph could control time. Saph’s pretty sure she’s imagining things. And yet sometimes, the world seems to stop around her. Everything brought to a grinding halt, her friend frozen, trees stilled in the breeze, water ceases its relentless lapping and Saph alone continues to move. She doesn’t know how or why this happens, only that it does. And sometimes when things start moving again, she gets confused looks from others wondering how she got from one place to another so quickly. “Maybe she has super speed,” that one glittering purple wildclaw suggested with a glint to her eyes that made Saph worry. But Ralhu only shakes her head at any argument to her claim. Saph controls time. She can make it speed up or slow down or stop entirely. She exists outside the bounds of time, is not beholden to it, will never age or decay. Earthshaker’s gift to a child taken before her time is to give her all of it. Every last second. (He is a soft grandfather, after all.) So perhaps there’s a reason the canyon seems to cause a dilation to its guests. Perhaps that’s why some visitors claim to have been there only a few days while elsewhere years have passed. Perhaps. But Saph would have to be able to control time for that to happen. And she’s just a cheerful child in a sweater. ❁ OTHER
