Cynfael
The Teller of Too Many Tales

Uh-oh, looks like this rambling storyteller wandered a little too far from his home lair (Volrin, #261879), and now he's off to see the world! If you ever feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off to See the World' thread, here. If you don't want another traveler in return, you can also drop him off at the Traveling Dragon Rest Hub!
Cynfael was once a sly thief with a sharp tongue and an even sharper wit, but he was caught in the acting of stealing from the hoard of a powerful Nocturne witch. She punished him by using her magic to take away the thing Cyn valued most in the world - his speech. Now he is completely incapable of normal, conventional communication.

While Cynfael can think up words and sentences in his head just fine, they uncontrollably come out of his mouth as rambling, cryptic fairy tales. Something as simple as trying to ask a friend what's for breakfast turns into a retelling of a tale like The Bulltoad with Three Legs, the harrowing fable of a mutant bulltoad who fought through the Waterway's droves of soldiers to fell the totalitarian Rat King and free his kingdom.

The fairy tales usually contain some kind of metaphor for what Cynfael had originally been intending to say, but they're nigh impossible to decipher... and can range anywhere from five minutes to multiple hours in length.

While the thieving Skydancer is trying to learn both morse code and sign language so that he can communicate without his voice, he's traveling the world now in search of a witch or other magical dragon with the power to remove his foul curse!

Who knows? Maybe if Cyn finds a dragon capable of restoring his speech, he'll be grateful enough to change his thieving ways for good.

When Cynfael found a hidden clan in the Tangled Wood, he wasn't sure what to expect. Imagine his surprise when he learned of a dragon who could cure curses! What luck! The Imperial, Noroi, was well versed in the art of curses - and more importantly, their cures.

While Cynfael waited for Noroi to find a reversal to his curse, a Ridgeback, Merek, spent a lot of his time with him. Sounds nice, right?

Wrong. It turned out that the only reason he was hanging around Cyn was so he could take the stories constantly spilling from his mouth and turn them into his next novel. Didn't matter how long or short Cyn's ramblings were, Merek jotted them down at every opportunity. He did ask permission to use them, at least, though Cyn's hour-long reply wasn't a clear "yes". Merek took it as one anyway.

To top it all off, Noroi was sorry to inform him that the curse was beyond his understanding, and therefore his ability to lift. However, he asked the Skydancer to return in the future in the hopes that he would have made some progress towards its cure.

So, still cursed, Cynfael continued his journey...

He half-considered going home when he found himself back in Light territory, but really, what was the point? He checked into the Sunbeam Lanternhouse instead. Much to his surprise, the residents were unbothered by his curse, though to his frustration, none had any talent at deciphering what he was trying to convey. A couple of dragons were amused by it, however.

So on the one claw, his stay was a complete failure. On the other, his curse charmed a couple of ladies, and he sired two full nests...

Exhausted from being unable to communicate with anyone, Cynfael found himself wandering into the forest to take a break from other dragons, and decided to take a nap on a warm, sunny rock. He was awoken by the rustling of bushes, where a brightly colored, flower adorned fae appeared. To his surprise, and delight, the fae only spoke in rhymes and riddles, which helped her understand Cyn’s ramblings, at least to some extent. She guided him to a village, where dragons of all shapes and sizes were wandering about.

She eventually lead him to a small cottage, where another, larger, purple fae answered the door. She was a witch, and could understand them both after casting a spell of telekinesis. After explaining his situation, Cynfael was ushered into another room where he was examined; which included lots of pokes, peering into his eyes and mouth, and recieving a small trim on his fur. He watched as the purple fae used various ingredients, one of which being his fur, to create some sort of bubbling concoction. When he was offered it, he didn’t think twice about drinking it, in case this was the cure to his curse.

To both his and the fae’s disappointment, it was not the cure, however he did find that while he still rambled, his voice was much deeper and richer than before. As the village had no other witches who might have the capability to cure him, he decided to continue his quest to cure his curse. In the meantime, Lupine (the first fae he met) suggested he carry around a journal and quill wherever he went for better communication until he was cured. He heeded her advice, and gratefully accepted both items, and waved goodbye to the faes as he left to find a cure.
