Aleit spent more time training than she cared to admit, but if that was what it took to secure her place as the battle team’s deputy, it was a price she was willing to pay. She loved training--the long hours of hard work, growing stronger by the day, putting her quick wits to use as she ran through countless battle strategies and tactical maneuvers--but gaining the respect and trust of her clanmates was costing her something precious: Huxley. She could feel him slipping away. While she was spending long days training with the battle team, he was never far from the nursery where he was helping the queens keep the hatchlings busy. From time to time he would bring a handful of them to the training grounds to watch exhibitions from the battle team, and on those days, Aleit found herself training harder when her friend was there, trying to pull his attention away from the hatchlings just for a moment, but every time she looked up from the field, he was chasing down another hatchling, trying to keep the little ones in line, his attention anywhere but on her. She was determined not to let herself be disheartened; she threw herself into her training, pushing herself harder, spending longer hours on the field, working from sunrise to sunset to keep working, keep fighting, keep earning the respect of her clanmates and her place in the flight. And as the sun sank below the horizon after the hatchlings were carefully tucked back into their mothers’ nests for the night, Aleit would look up from her training, and Huxley would be there, a big goofy grin on his face as he cheered her on from the edge of the training fields. Her heart soared; her best friend was there, just like he always had been and just like she knew he always would be. How could she have ever thought he’d forgotten her? But the thought, however brief, that she might lose Huxley, that he might drift away, was terrifying. He’d always been there, for as long as she could remember, her best friend, her partner in crime, her other half. She wasn’t used to this feeling--she had always been so confident about everything since she was a hatchling, always jumping up to take the lead in each endeavor and on every adventure, but now, for the first time, her courage, her quick wit, and her sharp tongue were failing her. She belonged with Huxley; she knew that--she just had to figure out how to tell him. |
