Naalas fog ghost | left hand to Athana | 
Naalas has never felt shy about using his family's influence to get ahead. Even when his mother, Nevara, respected matriarch of the Highland Refuge, tried so hard to dissuade him. She thinks it's unfair, and that family, while important, shouldn't let you get ahead in the world. Naalas never believed in that type of thinking, so it was only natural that when he left the Refuge (and his nagging mother) he'd fall in with Athana. When they met, he knew he'd found his match in wit, and figured that an alliance would be safer for him than roaming Light's lands on his own. Thus, the Riftruin Court was founded. Athana is the face of the court, imposing and bone-covered, but Naalas is the force behind it. See, Athana comes from a large family. Her parents, while the King and Queen of Plague, have quite a few children- and that means Athana's influence isn't as much as she'd hoped. Naalas however, while not a prince, has the power of one. He has the connections, the family name, the support. She resents him for this, quite a bit, sure, but she couldn't do it without him. And that's just how he likes it. When he and Athana go on "diplomatic" trips, while she discusses business with the local leaders, he meets with business owners. He reassures them that any dealings with Athana won't affect their businesses, as long as there's something in it for him. They wouldn't want anything bad to happen, now would they? Despite the fact that he's technically a part of a hostile faction to the main Refuge, he and his mother Nevara still occasionally go to Moshkaran and Kothos' spas, as long as they don't talk about business or politics. He wasn't always like this, this self serving thing that Nevara still calls son. When he was quite young, he travelled with Nevara on a diplomatic trip, staying over in Old Caravanserai before it's destruction. He wandered off into the fog while unsupervised, and came back the next day changed. He was lucky to have come back at all, but it seems he left something in those ever present fogbanks that changed him into what he is today- or maybe something came back with him? Nevara can't bring herself to cut him off entirely, but he knows she disapproves greatly. |
