Biography

ORTUS
|| treasurer || clan representative ||
"who can you trust when everything you touch turns to gold?"

I5p64Yz.gif

Ortus is a calm and professional dragon, always polite and courteous to others. He tends to be very level-headed and respectful in stressful situations. These traits, combined with his rather regal and impressive appearance, are what make him such an easy choice as Clan representative.

Unfortunately though, it was his dark and dangerous past that brought him to the Clan way back at the beginning.
As a teenager, Ortus discovered that he had an extremely beneficial and impressive power: the ability to turn anything to gold. Excited to show off this newfound power and make himself wealthy, the naive young dragon begun using his abilities recklessly. He turned cheap, rejected pieces of apparel into lavish, shimmering specimens. He decorated his nest with little knick knacks, freshly turned to gold. He even started converting fake coins made for hatchlings into the real thing. It didn't take long for neighboring clans to catch on to Ortus' clan's sudden fortune, which drove tensions to an extreme high. Until finally, the clan fell under attack in a well organized plan to pillage and destroy the clan and force Ortus to use his powers in exchange for mercy.

He was taken in, with no energy or will left to continue to fight after witnessing the downfall of his home and all he had ever known as a direct result of his foolishness. He was essentially a slave, forced to artificially influence their wealth, until yet another group of dragons organized themselves to attack and seize him for their own. Luckily enough, Ortus was able to escape in the midst of the fighting, and he flew for days with only momentary breaks, trying to outrun the news of his skills. He found sanctuary within his current clan, as they offered protection and aid in trying to understand the depths of his powers responsibly. Erebus even offered to work out a deal with him to alter his appearance slightly in order to throw off any other clans that may somehow recognize him. He was offered this haven, but at a price. He would be forbidden from using his powers for anything that would directly benefit himself. After becoming so used to living that rich and impressive life, it was a difficult transition. But he was successful in learning to control his urges and his powers alike, taking to earning his treasure the hard way. He acts as the Clan's treasurer, keeping track of its trades and verifying the validity of the treasure and gems that were offered.

The shimmering Imperial has had very few slip-ups with his powers since his arrival. There is only one truly worth noting, but it is an extremely controversial one. Ortus worked with Jekyll for quite some time, trying to understand the uses and limitations of his unique abilities. While Jekyll was always very loyal to his Clan and to his leader's orders, his wandering mind occasionally led him astray. Such was the case when he began to wonder what would happen if Ortus used his powers on a living creature, or perhaps even an otherwise doomed creature... Like a rotting egg, for example. He had several of these locked away in his lab, donated by parents that shared his passion for science and discovery and had no hope of any life ever coming from these dud eggs. Ortus felt deep in his heart that it was wrong, but when Jekyll told him to convert one of these eggs, he let his own curiosity take precedence. He used his power, and successfully turned the egg to solid gold, and then allowed Jekyll to keep it in his lab for some testing and research.

What neither of them expected, however, was for said egg to hatch. What came out of this egg was barely a dragon, barely even reptilian. It appeared to have once been a Pearlcatcher, but was hatched without the intelligence and free thought of these dragons. Its scales appeared golden, but it had a wispy-looking, yet solid mane and tail fur. Even its eyes appeared to be made of solid gold, wide and unblinking. And, to their horror, every so often it appeared as though the hatchling would suddenly be incapable of movement, stuck in a statue-like state. Yet, even in these moments, one could see the prominent muscles contracting beneath its scales, as if it were trapped inside of its own skin. The two quickly realized the severity of their blunder and did their best to hide it, but to no avail. Ender was irate, which was a rare sight, and the three of them struggled with the idea of contacting the parents of this "miracle" hatchling. In the end they decided against it, realizing just how un-dragon-like it appeared to be. It could hardly even be called a hatchling anymore.

Still, they decided to treat "him" as just another hatchling, putting him through training and teaching him the native language. He could only grasp the basics of language, just enough to get by really, but due to his extremely tough golden scales, he excelled in battle training. Any hit that anyone could land on him appeared to be no more than a nuisance fly to him, and he hit extremely hard. At this discovery, it was decided that he would be assigned to Ortus as his guard, a constant reminder of his grave mistake, yet a justifiable choice given Ortus' profession. Despite the shame that would forever tingle in his chest, he came to love his creation almost like a son. He fondly refers to him as Xanthos, after a mythical creature that was said to aid the deities in their daily tasks. Their friendship is simple and lacking in words, but loyal and fierce in the end.
