ODIN
“What happens when I dip my claws in there?”, Aoife asked. Baldwin looked at her worried.
“I advise you not to do that. You must know that I lost my horn to a horrible alchemy accident.”
“Oh, but I only threw a boot in the brew. Surely that can’t be too dangerous?” The colourful Spiral girl made some gestures that could only mean ‘you’re overreacting’. She stared at the Pearlcatcher scratching his head, her eyes were big and shiny, and they reminded Baldwin of a little hatchling begging its mother for some affection. She started pouting, and continued staring.
Baldwin gave in. “A-alright. Only the clawtips, though. Do not stick your entire arm in there!”
Aoife cheered and proceeded to slowly, carefully sink her claws in the bubbling, not-yet-boiling brew. She could feel its warmth on her claws and a little bit of prickling, too.
When she pulled out her hands, her clawtips had turned blue.
“Aaaawweesooommmmee…”, she laughed.
Aoife rushed back to the clan’s lair, showing everyone she met, friend or foe, what her nails looked like. “This is so pretty!!”, she yelled excitedly.
At a small riverbed, not far from their lair, she met Odin, the white Wildclaw, taking a sip out of the clear water.
“Odin!”, Aoife shouted. “Looklooklook!”
And before Odin could register who it was that was screaming at him, he saw only blue before his eyes.
“Aren’t they pretty?!?!”
Odin took a step back, noticed it was Aoife, and observed the Spiral’s claws.
“Why, yes. They look different. What did you do?”, he asked curiously.
“Dipped my claws in Baldwin’s cauldron.”
“And they turned blue?”
“Yes!!”
A short pause ensued. Odin seemed to contemplate.
After a while of silence, he began stuttering: “Do… do you think… I could…, too?”
He looked at his own claws. Pale and… boring.
Aoife nodded her head at what seemed to be the speed of light. “Yesyesyes let’s go ask Baldwin!”
And Aoife rushed off again.
Baldwin had sighed. “I really think you shouldn’t… and you shouldn’t have told anyone…”
“But pleaaase!” Aoife had pouted again, showing her shiny hatchling eyes under her cloak. “Please, Baldwin. Odin would really, really love to have some colour to him! Only one more time!”
Back at the lair, Odin just couldn’t stop staring at his claws, admiring them and their colour. A deep red it was, perfectly suiting his wristband and favourite rose. He was satisfied.
