Biography
Lost But Not Forgotten.
Aer comes from the very depths of Shal'anir, even further down than the darkest boughs her denizens dare enter - deeper than she even gives privy to. The mottled Pearlcatcher belonged to the old order of Shal'anir, one of her most trusted protectors from the ones who had come before, but fell to the foul taint that had taken hold and descended into madness. In an attempt to find a cure, and morbid curiosity, Aer had been imprisoned deep beneath the surface where his own then turned on him. Encased in chains, starved, and experimented on, whatever was left of Aer's mind had been destroyed. His body gave way to the corruption and, eventually, the others who yearned to help him gave up - yet they were far too fascinated to kill him outright. He was left in the same bough he’d been transferred to initially, and, as Shal'anir eventually turned on her own to steady the flow of the corruption, Aer was strangely left unscathed, but alone.
As his own kin died around him, Aer remained in his chains. His shattered screams, so prevalent to begin with, quietened in the years to come, and, for what felt like an eternity, Shal'anir's sacred halls soon fell silent.
When a new age was born in the form of Vesper, the new queen of the shaded behemoth, Aer's imprisonment came to an end. Shal'anir had frozen in time, taking Aer with her into a deep slumber and sending them both into stasis. As new life spread through her halls and Shal'anir shook off the last remnants of her centuries-long rest, Aer awoke with her. The taint within him wasn't gone, no doubt it never would leave, but when he opened his eyes and took his first breath, it was a blissful moment of clarity he'd thought he'd forever lost. He'd been in his prison for so long that the chains around him had rusted away, and it seemed the taint itself was dormant. The whispers were still echoing in his mind, icy claws scratching at his consciousness and threatening to tip him over the edge, but he drew strength from Shal'anir now, and she would not allow her faithful to fall.
When Vesper had appeared before him through the shadows, Aer needn't ask questions. Like those who truly knew the order inside and out, Aer was intrinsically in-tune with the tree's wishes and recognised the one she had proclaimed as her new empress immediately. He didn't need to know how the pale queen had known where he was, nor did he need to ask of his role. Aer knew, whether or not the taint still flowed through his veins, that his watch had not ended - the cycle had simply begun anew. This new matriarch needed him as much as Shal'anir did, and he would see to it that the happenings of the old order would not befall this new age. Not now, not ever. So long as Aer drew breath, he would preserve Shal'anir's grace for all to see.
Sekk's cold gaze looked the other up and down with a haughty level of indifference. "And pray tell, stranger," he hissed, eyes narrowing in his suspicions, "who you are to enter our home unguarded and to make such demands to see myself? Do you know who you're dealing with?"
The opposing Pearlcatcher stood in defiance of Sekk's scolding tone as he returned the once-over with his own. When he spoke, it was with a tone similar to that Sekk could manage - low, grating, unpleasant to listen to. It was a subtle cue, but one undeniable to those who knew what it meant. This was one of Sekk's own.
"I know you," the other returned with a sneer and impatient flick of his tail. "I know exactly who I'm dealing with. The true question is; do you know who you're dealing with?"
The Pearlcatcher of ebon and ice did not wait for an answer, instead giving into emotion and allowing his words to taste of blood and hatred. "I'm the one you betrayed. I'm the one you had them turn on. I'm the one you left to die, alone and forgotten in those shattered halls. You're lucky I don't return the favour to you, 'Truthsayer'."
