Born in Clan Altea, same as Marth, Merric knew the prince longer than any other, and was in fact his earliest childhood friend. Growing up, he was never the healthiest, and many a time would Marth drag him off to Elice because "he's got the sniffles again, can you heal him?" But, while Merric's health was too fragile to ever make a proper knight, there was always one thing he was good at, something that dazzled and amazed Marth to no end: magic.

The clan of Altea had no mages; one might even say that its former leader frowned upon the magically adept. Vaguely shunned for the one thing his poor constitution allowed him to be good at, the spiral left on Marth's encouragement to train in a clan in the Starfall Isles, planning to return when he'd proven himself a worthy mage.

One can only imagine how the spiral felt upon returning to his clan, only to find it decimated, his childhood friend long missing.

Somehow, though, he never gave up hope; rumors and word of mouth told him that Marth had escaped and was alive, somewhere; they reunited in the reeds and cliffs of the Windswept Plateau, and of course Merric meant to stay, of course he'd help Marth retake their home clan! That's what friends were for, were they not?

...Friends, ha; even though Merric seems oblivious about it, there's something just a little too affectionate for pure friendship on Marth's end. He will not tell, wouldn't want to drive his oldest friend away; sometimes it feels as though Merric returns the affections, without realizing that he is.

...It's okay, Merric. You're gay, Merric. That's why you keep waking up at 3am, Merric.

He earned the title of Mirthful Mage, for he always seems to be cheerful and smiling, always ready to lend a helpful hand if asked. Whether it's a facade, or whether he's truly and genuinely as happy as he seems, well.

If anyone knows, it'd be Marth, or Elice, and if they know, they aren't telling.
