"Promise?"

The two of them, lighthearted, battle worn, and so, so happy. Wandering with little purpose; somewhere along the way they'd already found what they were looking for.

At one point in her life, it may have unnerved her, to know someone was so devoted to her, every word, breath, and movement. And perhaps it still would have, if the feeling was not mutual.

A guardian and her charge, no one else, them against the world.

They wanted nothing else.

Standing in front of a wicked, warped creature, chests heaving, adrenaline flowing.

It was hard to imagine, that the snarled jaws and hollow cries came from beasts that had once been like them, had once been dragons. Someone's family, someone's friend, a lover, a child, a sibling, reduced to a mindless emperor, shredding any semblance of a past life. Deep cuts lined the many throats, a blade hung from a tattered wing.

"Don't ever let me become that," she'd said, lightly, but with a deep cut of fear.

"I- I won't."

"Promise?"

How could she have agreed? Agreed to kill the last part of her love, her friend? But in the moment, looking into her eyes, they were safe, powerful, and together.

"I swear."

Was it lying if there was hope? If there was a chance, a sliver of light? An opportunity so small, it might as well have not existed? Or had she already broken whatever fragile truce that had formed in those moments?

Because, god, she couldn't do it. She'd watched, helpless, as days turned to weeks, as her love turned - became something else to save her.

That creature is not her.

But it is all that is left.

It's not too late, she whispers to the empty cavern. Not too late, the echo confirms.

An exchange, a bargain. Drawing the runes in the soft soil, borrowed bones carefully balanced. The air is thick with tension and shadows.

Perhaps summoning the being that had brought Sornieth to its knees was not a well thought out plan.

But. She'd sworn. Death, or freedom.

And she could never kill the shambling remains of her love.

I'll fix this, she murmurs to the cave, again. There is no echo, this time. No comfort.

I swear.
