Adomania
n. the sense that the future is arriving ahead of schedule, that all those years with fantastical names like ‘2013’ are bursting from their hypothetical cages into the arena of the present, furiously bucking the grip of your expectations while you lean and slip in your saddle, one hand reaching for reins, the other waving up high like a schoolkid who finally knows the answer to the question.

In her first life, Adomania did not last long. Ash coated the ground, clung to her scales, and the shards of her egg were dusted in it. In her starved and weak state, she succumbed to the fangs and claws of other creatures within days.

In her second, she found her self nestled in the burned out coals and blackened forest once again. She would not become another's prey, she decided. The ruined, ashy landscape drove her to desperate measures. Adomania's life ended after she attempted to kill a hatchling to escape the claws of hunger.

In her third life, she thought the gods were punishing her. Seeking redemption for her past crimes, doing as much right as she could.

She was almost disappointed the fourth time. Ash, dust, and burned bones. Rising from the aftermath of a fire. But she had learned, religion was not the answer, nor power or redemption.

In the lives onward, she sought knowledge.

Whispering and murmurs at the edges of the world. A frayed and burned out book. The same events, again and again and again. Insignificant, unimportant clues that, over decades and years and lifespans, were weaving them self into answers.

But her recall isn't perfect; she can't keep her treasures, artifacts, and scrawled sentences across her lives. Each death, she awakes in the blackened forest, bright flares and sparks around her, as if none of her previous experiences mattered. Her life is quickly becoming a faded photograph, once holding each detail in sharp relief, but now blurred and unclear.

It is a race against time, though she has so much of it. To gather the details, to hold them within her mind, to carry them across the chasm between lives. Adomania is trapped between the urgency to discover and the paralyzing uncertainty of will it even matter? How long until she unearths the secrets, what she is, if there are others. And how long until she forgets it as well?

Has she already?

Combing through old records and descriptions in the Shattered Plains, Adomania isn't sure how many lives she has lived. Or if there is any purpose to her efforts. Is it worth it? A thousand lives, all reduced to a single search.

Maybe there is no ending the cycle.
