They found it nestled in the ruins of the Hewn City, just as the sun was setting.

It was impossible to tell what had happened, there were no prints near the enclave, only broken egg shells. A smear of blood marked a stone, but it was likely from the creature's bewildered thrashing.

But the tiny thing had either calmed down or worn itself out by then, in the quiet eve, the only movement Gaudière and Neologism could see was the rise and fall of its many chests and trembling wings. The two of them, they'd seen this type of creature before, this horrible agglomeration of body parts and beings, with far too many eyes and claws, but never, never, had they seen one so young.

It stared back at them, features lost in the dying light. It was only when Gaudière raised her blade that the pitiful creature drew back in fear, the twilight suddenly filling with low hisses and cries, each head begging for safety. But one of them, with jagged tan scales, did not cry, only pressed its neck against another, letting out a quiet sound.

It was enough to make Gaudière lower the knife, because she knew the sound of an imperial trying to comfort another.

Gaudière and Neologism argued for hours, both trying to talk each other out of what they both believed they should do, and by the time the sun had reached over the thin clouds, they had decided.

They couldn't kill this creature, these children. The being had made no aggressive movement toward them, unlike so many of its kind, and the only thing it seemed to want was to be safe and together.

The emperor is much larger, now, held in the Labyrinth. The tomb is sealed, and only opened to give the creature whatever Gaudière has managed to kill.

It has become far more threatening, though it has not, and will probably never reach the size of its kin. Without the live hunt and fresher food, it remains thin and lean, and hopefully far too weak to escape from its prison.

The Sanctuary is fairly indifferent to the emperor, but the more empathetic of dragons have taken comfort in the murmured sounds and incomprehensible speech of the creature echoing off the walls. It speaks only to itself, its other heads.

She has to remember that had those siblings not perished so soon after their hatching, these would be strong, young dragons, setting out upon the world.

How she hates trapping them like this, in the molded cavern. She wishes it could be free of its curse, but at least, it does sound content, with its self as the only company.

Gaudière supposes even a mindless creature could get lonely, and she is grateful this one doesn't have to live in complete isolation.
