Gurse her size. Grinder could barely fit into the little laboratory the cursed wind dragons had made. Curse the spirals always zooming around like flies! Curses, curses, curses! She wished she had been assigned to a different laboratory, preferably an arcane one, so she could learn how they used magic to animate their robots. Or--as they like to call them--golems. But they were robots. Curse the arcane and their weird terminology. Ugh.

And curse Julian for being so handsome! Every time he asked her for something, she gave it to him. Her knees went all shaky and her voice shrank in his presence. She’d follow him to Perdition and back; and that’s exactly what she did. She followed his explosive butt all the way to a traveling market clan after he was exiled. She even had a daughter with him. But, well, she really loved him. And, as much as she cursed him, she enjoyed spending time with him and discussing invention ideas.

Grinder’s robots made for quite helpful servants. After she had Mestrel, she programmed robots to help watch the little hatchling and make purchases at her shop. She left little ones in Julian’s lab keep a careful eye on him when they were apart, because Stormcatcher knew he needed it. All across the clan, the robots helped pitch tents when the traveling market reached a new location and pack them away when they left, clean up shops after closing, and advertise across Sornieth. They have streamlined much of the clan’s chores, and for that, the dragons of Skyloft are grateful.

____It was nearly a miracle when Grinder laid that egg. The one that would survive--she was sure it would perish like the other two. She mourned every day for her lost children, but gave all the love she could to her living one. She treasured that little nocturne with all her might, though some dragons in the clan thought she spoiled Mestrel. Despite this, Mestrel was her pride and joy and was the only thing that could soften Grinder’s abrasive attitudes.

When she first saw that Mestrel’s egg had yet to rot, she cradled it in her arms and raced to find the mothers of Skyloft. They had often mocked Grinder for cursing so many things, but Briea, a coatl who often watched the hatchlings, gave her help. They placed the egg in a soft, warm nest and gave it sunlight periodically. They sheltered it from the storms the Plateau kicked up and were careful not to jostle it when they moved. The mothers’ efforts paid off, and a healthy little nocturne and friendship hatched only a few weeks later.

____Curses followed Grinder everywhere, whether they came from her mouth, her mate, or Stormcatcher himself. Whenever she was asked to tell the story of how she met Julian to the hatchlings, she always did so with an exasperated sigh, saying “Stormcatcher cursed me to find him, and I cursed myself by staying with him. You know that apple he had sitting on a table exploded yesterday?” The hatchlings had taken to Grinder’s cursing, and so she was no longer allowed to visit them.

Most of the time, though, Grinder was joking. The jokes may have been in poor taste, but jokes they were. She never seriously forsook Stormcatcher or the Julian or the Twisting Crescendo and its odd new pattern. It was just that Grinder would have nothing else to say if she didn’t constantly curse everything in sight. And she thought it was ridiculously hilarious hearing a bite-sized voice screeching “CURSES!” at the sky from across Skyloft's breezeway.
