Part of the newly re-established Seeker Order, Kato was sent out into the world to fulfill their duty of finding and containing Shade creatures. When she arrived at the Cathedral, she was overwhelmed with the shadows that clung to the ancient place.

Over time, however, she's become more tempered. While the dragons she is surrounded by are all touched by the Shade, she cannot bring herself to hold them accountable for it.

 Kato's duty comes first and foremost; that of finding and containing the Shade. Upon her arrival at the Cathedral, she found the Shade coiled and wrapped around it, woven into each dragon whom ever traveled there or was hatched there.

At first seeking to imprison them all, she was stopped by two other Gaolers; Tamati and Loatheb. Untouched by the Shade, they told her that they were not natural-born Gaolers, but once a Guardian and Pearlcatcher. They told her how it was their charge to both protect and remember those whom resided within the Cathedral, as they, too, struggled against the Shade even as they were so entwined within it.

Intrigued, Kato decided to withhold her judgement and study its inhabitants further. The longer she lingered, the more she bore witness to the fact that all the dragons within the Cathedral were indeed infused with the Shade, but were grappling with it in their various ways.
