"Everyone, go," the Guardian said, and her voice was flat and deadly.
A thin smirk spread across the face of the Snapper standing opposite her.
At that moment, Tsavo knew he'd won.
Prelude, his paper-thin wings flaring like twin sails, stepped forward. "We're not-"
"I said go," Journey snapped. Her tail flicked toward the Fae, who flinched back, unaccustomed to this newfound hostility from his lifelong companion.
As one, the clan hesitated. They'd weathered far worse, they thought, than this arrogant upstart. How could their matriarch, always so sure and soft and steady, order them to flee?

The dragons returned to the clearing at nightfall, expecting to find their matriarch waiting for them. Victorious, reassuring, ready to put this nightmare behind them.
But the clearing was empty. Silent, save for the faint whisper of wind against the leaves that bordered it.
Prelude's claws trembled.
"She's gone," he said, his voice a ragged whisper. "I can't feel her anywhere."
Though the others didn't speak, they could feel it too. Already, the magic had started to leech from the clearing they'd called home for so many years. The grass underfoot grew brittle and brown at the tips, and the stream that ran alongside their dens shivered dully in the moonlight.
"Where is the traitor?" The question came from Kuiper, all battle scars and the faint smell of the Mire. The withered grass beneath her creaked like old bones from the weight of her anger. "I'll tear him apart."
"Gone, too, it would seem." Amba, the scribe, settled beside her old friend. Her claws twitched, aching, already, to put the day's events to parchment.
"We'll bring her back." Prelude's words were sharp. "I don't care if it takes the rest of eternity. We're getting her back."
Kuiper shifted her weight from foot to foot.
"I don't know," he said. "But I may know someone who does."
He sighed, ear frills drooping. In the past few hours, the Fae looked as though he'd aged a thousand years.
"I must go to Dragonhome. The Brothers ... The Brothers may be able to help."
"Let's go, then." Amba rolled her shoulders, stretching the tendons that led to her wings. "The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll return."
Prelude scanned the faces of the dragons surrounding him. In the dim moonlight, shadows darkened their expressions.
"I'll go alone," Prelude said. "I won't risk the safety of the rest of the clan."
"Like hell you will!" Kuiper drew herself up to her full height. "We're family. We all go, or none of us go."
Prelude's protest was cut short by a snort.
"Don't argue, small one." Yuerba, the oldest of the clan, said. "It's settled."
Raising her voice so it echoed off the trees, Yuerba continued.
"Gather what you need, everyone. We leave for Dragonhome at dawn."

Hi there. I don't know how to write without sounding like a weirdo, but today for the first time I read "The Day I met Glade Mother", and it was amazing. I'm relatively new, and I was struggling with exalting. Thank you so much for your beautiful words.
