Lair lore:
Carmina (Commonly known as Mama Mina) was essentially thrown out and sent on her Search much younger than most would be. She didn't want to guard just one person/thing. She wanted to guard everyone that needed it. Since that didn't fit the tradition, she was 'encouraged' as soon as possible to get going.
So that is why she is the Mother/Ruler of the clan. And why there's so much diversity in her lair. She will take anyone in, no matter what. All she asks is you do your fair share, whatever that may be. (Erik is basically the jester, so literally anything you can do counts for something!)
