Maybe someday they'd get to be heard by a hatchling. Badge Tales is a Shadow fundraiser for our profit push and it will run from the [b]26th of June to the 2nd of July[/b]. New badges will be added daily during the event's run! [b]You may buy the badges either with the currency listed or by writing a short tale[/b] (400 words max) [b]about them![/b]

Sunday - Lily of the Valley

"Hush, now," the parent hummed to their hatchling, gathering the fussy coatl close up against their chest as they rocked him, back and forth, back and forth, in an attempt to lull him to sleep. "Or else the valley lilies will get you."

The coatl hesitated mid-shriek. "Lilies? Like, flowers? How can those . . . get me?"

The parent chuckled, low and deep in their throat. "You see my eyes, child? How a vibrant green they are, when yours are violet?"

Wide-eyed as he stared up at his parent, the hatchling nodded.

"That's because I hail from the Viridian Labyrinth." They paused. "You know what a labyrinth is? A terrible maze, full of twist and turns meant to get you lost. And what guides your steps there?"

"What?" the hatchling whispered.

"Lilies of the Valley. Tiny, white-petalled blooms that grow within cracks in boulders, or in the eyeholes of a long-dead dragon's skull, or, some say, from the dark spaces of one's soul."

The hatchling shrunk down, huddling in on himself, his wings drawn close against his body. "T-they guide?"

The parent smiled. "To monsters, yes." They flexed their wing, and their child's gaze traveled across the long, pale scars that stretched from shoulder to wingtip, along with smaller marks on their hindleg and tail. Their expression turned stern. "Which is why you must sleep. Lilies only grow in moonlight, but if a dragon keeps his eyes shut, well."

"Well?" the coatl pleaded.

They tucked him into his nest. "Then they never have chance to take root," they murmured, and pressed a kiss over his eyes, so they were forced to close, and fade into slumber.
