Sornieth is a warring land overflowing with magic. As the elements relentlessly rip through the world, splendorous and phenomenal as they are ruthless, peculiar anomalies begin to forge in places of volatile combat. Stray leylines of excess magic from the neverending battle of the Elemental Flights has always existed, the remnants of fight and fury shed from the scales of a hundred thousand dragons… dormant… until now.

Spirideer are divine creatures that begin their lives as shavings of concentrated magic, until taking shape as ghostly orbs, slowly drifting through the wilds. They are ethereal anomalies, manifesting only when the imbalance of elements are roaring at their strongest… when the world is on the precipice of conflict and the anticipation of battle is tangible.

They are small and nimble, mimicking the common deer-prey of the world. They possess dainty hooves, slender, petite legs and a dazzling variety of horns, ears, eyes, tails and flank patterns. Despite their seemingly delicate appearance, they are not to be trifled with. It takes insurmountable strength and wit to hunt and slay these spirits, thrusting their soul orb back unto the world. This places them in limbo until awakened again, to reforge in an uncertain future and instils a permanent sense of distrust within the individual that takes a truly special bond to overcome. These bonds are known only as heartbonds; a powerful pledge between dragon and doe...

Whimsical and elusive, there is little known about them as they seldom reveal themselves to mortals and shy away from civilization. Spirideer often remain close by to their place of manifestation and take it upon themselves to protect it at any cost, driven by a mysterious but noble nature that rules absolute from their hearts, no matter their personal beliefs. Although shy, some are more curious — and tolerant — than others.

Studies into the nature of Spirideer...

"Wait! Is that your Spirideer? I haven't sensed such a powerful heartbond since... oh, it's a long story. Who are you? My name is Celephine, but you can call me Chi! I've been studying these spirits for a long time, alongside my mother, Arvalis... she's around here, somewhere. Together, we serve as wardens for these creatures; caretakers, even. But a lot of the time, they can take perfect care of themselves, trust me... it's a good thing, too. Some are compelled by a darker force of heart to seek them out. That's why we watch over them, as much as we can. This place is a particularly active hub of energy for manifestation, right beside my mother's sacred tree. Ah... but there's so much more for you to learn. I want to show you! I'll tell you what — I'll keep you informed with letters! SPIRIDEER TRAITS GUIDE

A spirideer is made up of various different traits. Depending on the trait, it may have its own range of colors and variants, and not all of them are guaranteed. A spirideer will always get at least 4 traits but can have as many as 8.

Guaranteed Traits

AtNjt17.png

You will always get a spirideer complete with a body, eyes, ears and tail. It is possible for a spirideer to be a "double" or a "triple" when the body, ears and tail roll the same color.

There are some special colors available in addition to the entire Flight Rising color wheel.

Body - Has one variant that comes in 211 colors.

Ears - Have 8 variants that come in 209 colors.

Tail - Has 8 variants that come in 209 colors.

Eyes - Have 9 variants that come in 11 colors.

Common Traits

OU4RLjm.png

A spirideer is quite likely to also have a pair of horns, a patterned body, or even both at the same time. The colors of these traits can also match those of guaranteed traits, although horns have some unique colors of their own.

Horns - Have 11 variants that come in 90 colors.

Markings - Have 8 variants that come in 208 colors.

Rare Traits

fvNPpGw.png

On a rare occasion, when there is excess magic it may form into a unicorn horn or a pair of wings upon the spirideer. And with an exceptional stroke of luck, both may even appear at the same time!

These traits have their own unique color sets and will not match with anything else.

Unicorn Horn - Has 3 variants that come in 20 colors.

Wings - Have 3 variants that come in 20 colors.

Unique Spirideer

These spirideer do not make use of the regular system of traits and have a very rare chance of appearing if the magic aligns just right. Only one of each unique deer will ever exist. However, not all of them will be obtainable from random chance; future events may also include unique deer as prizes.

Unique designs are mostly original but a few may also resemble Flight Rising familiars. Concepts and designs from media outside of FR will not be used (so, no fan-spirideer such as Pokémon designs).

An opening takes up a lot of time which we are very limited on. But even if we've been on hiatus for a while, there is no need to worry, the project has not been abandoned unless we explicitly say so (in which case there will be an announcement). Feel free to hop on the pinglist!

It was as if the whole world had been drained of light save for the occasional blinding flash. The storm swallowed the autumnal woodlands in entirety and with it came an endless lashing of rain and wind, throttling the tallest trees that seemingly stretched on for an eternity. They bent and swayed, groaning agonizingly. Quick little feet jumped from branch to branch, a slender body urgently rushing through pine needles with no concern for slipping and falling below. Another bright flash in the sky briefly outlined the nimble creature and the unmistakable contour of wings. Chi used the trees as well as she could to protect herself from the storm. She moved faster. Faster than the lightning that split open the sky like a burning scar, and then came the deafening roar of thunder. The forest trembled at its might as it would an awakening beast, sending creatures big and small scuttling for shelter. But not her. Weaving her way through the dense thicket, the Fae stilled her nerves as she finally flung herself down and landed elegantly below in what appeared to be a glade, surrounded by tangles of knotted greenery. Through the opening in the canopy of trees she saw the grieving sky. She could not look long as rain pelted her blinking eyes, having already soaked her through, cold and unforgiving but not as much as the creature she pursued… The leaves rustled, whispering to one another. This forest was her home and yet she felt judged. Trepidation was hanging in the air; an ill calm before the inevitable storm, a storm far more frightening than the one that snared the forest within its rageful fist. The monster in the sky that roared did not scare her, nor did the screaming of the wind or the way the branches of trees had grasped at her like gnarled fingers. Her heart was pounding away as desperately as an animal would trying to escape the bars of its cage. She drew in a deep breath as the woodlands hissed at her, the arch and sway of the trees almost feeling like they were beginning to close in. "Show yourself!" Her demand was cried at the top of her voice, only to immediately be carried away by the storm. She controlled her nerves and stood stalwart against the battering of the wind, despite her small stature. "You coward!" Alone, in the cold and dark, she was just a singular flame, yet her passion burned like a wildfire. Determination gleamed in her amber eyes and she did not waver… until her attentive ears suddenly perked with alarm. She whirled around and sought to find the source of this sudden dread that filled her, and through the downpour she was granted her unwise wish. She could see well in the darkness, but this was not a matter of capability. This was a matter of choosing when to be seen and like the phantom he was, his shape came into being, the branches she had seen before twisting into long antlers. Vacant emerald eyes regarded her, a bloody pinprick of red pulsing within their depths that she missed when she blinked. He dwarfed her in size and as he split from the shadows, it was clear he had no intention to hide. Not anymore. Chi stared at him like a startled cat. Her crest betrayed her fear, fluttering high above her head like a hummingbird's wings, but still, she did not budge. He was a nightmare come to life, the mantle of a beast he had slain draped across his head and flank, obscuring his true visage from view. Or perhaps he was this monster. One glimpse into his eyes and she felt like she had known him forever. He was a hunter, a killer… a revenant. A twisted imitation of what he should have been. He was cursed. She had followed him this far… she was not going to let him go again. "These wildlands are beyond you… how dare you trespass here!" She seethed, realizing now she stood in front of him, she did not know what to say. And he knew as well as she did she was parroting her mother, beginning to sound more and more like her with every confrontation. Chi's nature was much more curious, and she was burning to question him, but she knew where that path led. She had travelled it before. He would only inspire anger and stall for time. She would not allow it. And the way he stared at her only fanned the flames of her fiery heart, a candle's waning flicker beginning to kindle out of control. He did not perceive her as a threat, that much was certain, but the tension in the air was palpable. The wind screamed at them from between the trees, a swift strike of lightning followed by a rumbling bellow of thunder. Chi's harsh glare was in stark contrast to his icy glower as he looked fixedly down upon her. It felt like this moment lasted an eternity until a gleam at his side caught her eye, and she realized almost too late. The revenant had his crossbow in his claws before she could blink and he fired a volley of several ruby bolts, ethereal shards that looked sharp enough to slice stone. They whizzed towards her frighteningly fast and she barely swerved out of their way as they struck the trees behind her, slicing through bark like paper and leaving a ghostly trail in their wake. She had been fortunate one hadn't clipped her wing… or perhaps he had sent her a warning. But it did not matter. His magic was unnatural, warped by his own corruption, and it tainted the woodlands around him. She wasn't going to back down. Another thunderous howl of thunder signified the beginning of their battle; the poignant crash like the first strike of a war drum. Chi took only a moment to steel herself. The showering rain did not deter her as she lifted her head, focused her strength, and with all her might, sent a fierce but radiant pirouette of searing flame spiralling through the darkness. It danced untamed in the night, spitting glowing embers and lighting her way as it headed straight towards him like an incandescent ribbon. She bounced after it with swift strides as she rushed him. Her passion had become anger, and her spell sought to hungrily melt the meat from his bones. She sought to sink her sharp little teeth into him. The hunter unfurled his wings, shielding himself from the blow. He felt the fire lick at him, desperately trying to find a crack in his defences until they all but fizzled out in defeat. There was a stray flame clinging to the banner draped across his left wing as he returned to his previous position, just in time to end her foolish attempt to charge him by swatting her aside like she was an insignificant fly. She regained her balance with her wings, stumbling. He could feel her wrath when she lifted her head to hiss at him. And from the glint in his eye, a sinister twinkle, he was silently acknowledging her increase of strength since the last time they had met. It made her sick. "Why… why must you hunt them? Why do you hurt them? What compels you to be such a monster!" She could not help but yell, tears gleaming in her eyes, concealed by raindrops. Chi could feel herself on a blade's edge between too many painful emotions, sorrow washing over her like the rain. The rasp of a laugh she received fuelled her fury like she'd never felt before. The usually soft-hearted dragoness could not control it, magma churning inside that was on the cusp of exploding. She thought of the forest and her mother, who were relying on her. She thought of the Spirideer, who she was fighting so valiantly to protect. Her love for them gave her power, and as it swirled inside her, she intended to finally bring their deadly dance to a close and end this. His nonchalance, like he really didn't care what she did, was the final insult that pushed her over the edge. She roared, the mightiest she could with her light and tender voice, and sent a blast of fire from the very depths of her heart. Her glimmering green scales were incandescent and opalescent all the way from her belly to her throat, jade embers billowing in the shrieking winds. But the hunter had been waiting. To bait her had hardly been a challenge, knowing how easily she succumbed to her anger, despite her attempts to remain calm like her mother. Chi was brave but she was young, and she had a heart filled with fire. She gasped, her soft voice wrought with disbelief and a plunge into terror. Magic unlike anything she'd ever seen before had consumed her spell, devouring it up to the very last cinder. And when it had hit her, it had hit hard. She gazed down and trembled, watching as strands of wispy essence clung to her claws, shimmering scarlet everytime she moved. She felt… weak. "What have you done…" Every flame she attempted to summon turned into a piddling, unimpressive sliver of amber, barely flickering as it extinguished in the rain with barely a hiss. It confused her as much as it intrigued her, the hostility slowly melting from her face into a profoundly pure expression of tentative curiosity. Something stirred in her swiftly racing heart that made her feel like she had to call everything into question. But then he reached for the blade at his side and she shrank, her frills flaring. A four-winged silhouette swept down from the trees above, outlined by lightning. Chi gasped, her eyes wide. "Mother!" Arvalis descended down in front of her, the airy chimes swinging on her staff, a comforting ring among the scream of the storm. She immediately brought a large feathery wing over her daughter to shield her from the deluge of rain, feeling tremendous relief once she realized that she was unharmed. "You should not have come this far alone, Chi!" She could not help but reprimand her in a harsh whisper, but there was no room inside her heart for anger, only disappointment and concern. Chi felt the spell that had siphoned her strength beginning to fade, alleviating some of her tension, but the battle itself had pushed her far. And now the consequences of her actions were catching up to her. She always had so much to say, but now, she was silent, earnestly shameful. Arvalis did not want her to descend into sorrow. "You will be alright." She nuzzled her with a heavy sigh, her hushed and gentle voice a soothing whisper… a reminder that this would all pass and the forest would be at peace again. Her voice was as calming as gently tapping rain, a stark contrast to this relentless storm. But this reprieve could only last so long. He was overcome by a beastly nature, curls of smoke escaping from between his snarling fangs, his long claws hooked into the earth but longing to carve something that would bleed. Arvalis watched Chi tremble, their moment of solace coming to an abrupt end and thrusting her back into reality. The Spiral bristled, turning to face their enemy. She stood just as tall and clutched her staff tightly, the clink of their chimes now drowned out by the wailing of the wind. "No more…" she whispered, no rage in her heart, only an almost incomprehensible pity… and the undying drive to protect the forest, the Spirideer, and her beloved daughter. "Respen." He had grown in size and power and he stalked them like a crazed wolf would regard trapped rabbits, intending to devour them entirely. Rain leapt and sizzled as it drummed against his blade, the same blade that was singing to spill her blood. He gripped the hilt tightly in his talons, which pulsed as if it had a heartbeat. He had become distorted, a twisted reflection of who he once was. Malevolence had consumed him. They were looking at a monster. "D-don't…" Chi begged, unsure who she was pleading with — the beast that could not be reasoned with, or her protector and only family. She had sworn to never let fear control her again, but seeing him like that now, she was helpless. She had come here to fight and she had gotten her wish. Now, all she prayed for was for it to have never happened. He moved with impossible speed and jumped, his sword swinging down as he fell towards her. Arvalis parried with her staff to stop him from slicing off her head. Chi cried out, trying to stand but the weakness pulled her back down, an ill-made magic that would not let her go, clinging on as tightly as it could in its death throes. She struggled defiantly but it was no use… she would have to wait, but time was something she didn't have. "No! S-stop!" Respen was relentless. Against one another they were equally matched but the moment staff locked with blade, she could feel the pressure bearing down upon her, threatening to make her snap. He pushed against her with all his might, threatening to knock her off balance. His jaws were too close to her, glistening fangs that crept nearer and nearer with each passing moment, seeking to rip into the smooth scales. But one thought of Chi was all Arvalis needed… a memory of her sweet smile, her warmth, her despair as she watched this chilling fight unfold as she lay defenceless, living her worst nightmare. Arvalis's cyan eyes flew open wide; with a burst of incredible strength, she cast him back, flustering him with one powerful flap of her four, crimson wings. She lifted her staff skyward and the storm answered her plea. One bolt of lightning illuminated the darkness, shattering a path all the way down to her staff's crystal. It burst and shone and crackled, the air electrified and whirring like the insides of an overworked engine. And then she turned her staff upon him. She was a conduit; a vessel that channelled and contained all that energy, and with her magic bursting at the seams she focused it into a concentrated flash that zapped towards him and hit him with the full force of the sky's fury. The glade lit up, blindingly bright. Chi squealed, lifting her wings to hide herself as she waited with great apprehension for the glare to fade. When it did, all was eerily quiet save for the rain, even as the storm began to sooth. She had gathered the strength to push herself up on slightly shaking legs, so afraid of what she was going to see that she felt unwell. She took one tentative step and then froze altogether. Arvalis stood not too far from the defeated revenant. A cone of storm swirled around her in a torrent before it suddenly stopped, evaporating into the air. Respen attempted to stand but he could not, sparks of lightning crackling along his feathers, causing strands of his dark fur to stand on end. As the Spiral's eyes gradually lost their overwhelming glow, all there was within her stare was sadness. She had not slain him nor would she bring herself to, but she took a moment to remember everything that had brought her to this moment, and then closed her eyes in misery. Chi felt a sting in her heart. She was about to approach when suddenly, something caught her attention from the corner of her eye… something that only she alone noticed, and when she turned her head, it was a sight that shocked her to the very core. Petite, ruby hooves stepped slowly through the clearing, barely even making a sound. Each stride left withering crystals in its wake, shimmering and distorting before fading into nothingness. Chi immediately recognized how they were practically identical to the bolts fired from the hunter's accursed bow. She was stunned into silence, tracking the ethereal creature with her eyes as it moved right past her, yet it ignored her as if she simply didn't exist. This was the opportunity they had been waiting for… to finally capture the hunter. But as Arvalis opened her eyes to watch Respen fight to lift himself, she found herself overcome by an intense pull, something tugging at her very spirit. She turned her head like she was chasing this feeling and then, she, too, went still. A Spirideer walked among them. It was unlike anything they had ever seen. Was it corruption that palpitated scarlet through the jagged cracks and protruding rubies along its slender body? It was the telltale sign that this doe had once been shattered, its soul orb having finally reforged itself into another form… yet the raw power that radiated from it was inconceivable, pulsing in a steady and strong rhythm. Like it read their thoughts, it sent them a brief unsettling look. And when it finally stopped walking, it stood beside the hunter. At last, he rose slowly, and as he did Arvalis felt her heart plummet to the deepest depths. She spread her four, magnificent wings far and wide, holding her staff at the ready as the crystal quivered with the remnants of being overcharged, forging the tip into a magical scythe. The Spirideer faced her, and so did he. It was unmistakable… …he had heartbonded with it. And it was the most powerful bond they had ever seen. Respen did not say a word as his deer suddenly released an ear-splitting cry, a broken song like shattering glass and claws striking steel. In one motion, the eerie creature lifted and brought down its willowy legs, releasing an encompassing tsunami of dark smoky curls glittering with sharp crystals. In a heartbeat, Arvalis leapt over to the daughter and shielded her and then… there was total darkness. …the pelting rain had slowed to a stop. Night was slowly beginning to wane. The forest was breathing steadily around them, no longer drowning, but gently weeping, glistening droplets drizzling along every leaf and stem. Chi slowly came to with her little nose twitching, her ears still slightly ringing from that bloodcurdling scream. When her memories groggily returned to her, she gasped. "Mother!" Arvalis steadily drew back. Her wings unfurled, revealing the smaller dragoness who had been tucked away beneath her, safe and warm. Fragments of crystal had pierced through her four feathery wings, yet they were merely splinters, easily plucked even if they stung. What hurt more was the crushing fear that her daughter had almost been the one to receive the blow. She was not as resilient. "...he is gone." Arvalis announced quietly as she rose up, her eyes sweeping across the vacant glade dotted with crystals. She no longer sensed him, nor his deer, but she was still wary. "How…" Chi whispered, distraught, struggling to comprehend everything that had unfolded tonight. They had been this close to finally stopping him, but they could never have foreseen what had happened. She went on to passionately exclaim, "How could he have heartbonded… he has no heart! He hunts them for sport! It… must be some trick…" But Arvalis knew that simply was not true. "That deer willingly chose him." Her voice was soft. "But…" Chi went to retaliate, angered and not wanting to believe it, but then she fell silent in contemplation. She thought about the moment she had seen something in those sharp, emerald eyes that had caught her off guard. Something that had reached through her rage. She knew she hadn't imagined it, but now... it was too late. She huffed tiredly, looking down at her small paws, where all traces of that strange essence had disappeared, along with whatever suppression had been attempting to keep her magic restrained. She summoned a spitting flame without problem, relief flooding through her; until she noticed the shards that stuck out from her mother's wings. She sprang up with urgency in a panic. "O-oh!" Arvalis brought down one wing to gaze at the withering crystals that cut into her feathers, their glow beginning to dim already. They were fading on their own, just like the rest of them in the clearing, but she couldn't deny that she felt slightly hollower on the inside… like they had taken a bite out of her magic, and it would take time for it to replenish. "This withering magic… all along… it was his own Spirideer that granted him the power." "How?!" Chi demanded again, practically crying out in disbelief. "H-how could a Spirideer… why would a Spirideer do that? Those crystals… it must be how he makes his crossbow bolts! And his breath. All of it. Helping him shatter its own kind…" "There was great turmoil within that Spirideer." Arvalis plucked a shard from her wings, holding it between her golden claws and watching as it dwindled into smoke. Her eyes shimmered with grim curiosity. "Just as there is within him…" "I don't understand…" The Fae whined. So many unanswered questions, most of them terrifying. "Can a Spirideer be… corrupt?" "No… it is a choice. But the pains of our past often can blind our future." Chi felt her heart sink. That sounded all too familiar right now, and when their eyes met, she knew. She bowed her head, trying not to cry again. "I'm sorry…. I'm sorry for not waiting! I was just so… angry. I couldn't take it, thinking of what he was going to do to the deer if we were even a second too late!" "Do not blame yourself, Chi…" Arvalis lightly brought a hand under her chin, tilting her head back up. "You are so very brave… the Spirideer are lucky to have you to protect them. But this was a lesson you should not ignore. No matter how furious you are, you must remember that you will always find true strength in your friends and allies…" A few stray tears glided down her cheeks, like diamonds. But then the next moment, those words made sense more than ever. A familiar glow caught the corner of her eye and she simultaneously wanted to collapse in relief and jump from joy, doing the latter as her whole face lit up. "Syr!" she exclaimed excitedly, emotion wracking her voice as she watched the fluffy Spirideer prance through the bushes. It bounded towards her, each hop leaving behind a trail of shimmering sparkles that rang like tiny, twinkling bells. As soon as it was by her side it practically melted against her, its small horn illuminating the fading darkness in a pleasant, golden glow. Arvalis felt her heart warm as the two hugged; Chi clung to her deer like she was afraid, at any moment, it would disappear. However, when it went to use its horn to assist her ailments, she jumped, startled. "It's fine, Chi." Arvalis immediately reassured her, briefly turning her attention to her own Spirideer who had emerged, standing beneath her two front legs and slightly flexing it wings. She lifted a paw to pet it, its long ears flopping as it leaned eagerly into her touch. "His magic is only potent enough to harm a deer if they are pierced with a direct blow. It will be safe to touch you." "...okay…" Chi murmured, though still slightly doubtful, if only because the whole ordeal had shaken her up… but now her entire family was here, she felt stronger. She leaned her head down, and one touch of the horn against her mended any remaining wounds, making her feel as cozy and warm as she would curling beside a hearth. She felt sparkly inside. She couldn't help but giggle. Arvalis smiled softly, then looked up, towards the slowly rising sun. Soon, it would crown the sky in a brilliant halo. Tangerine-gold flames not unlike her own colours had already fanned out, seeking to paint every dark corner with a burst of colour, chasing away the shadows. She had watched the sun rise and fall for thousands of years, but never once had it failed to make her heart soar. Chi glanced at her, then followed her gaze, where she set her amber eyes upon the horizon. The wind peacefully whistled around them. The storm had finally ended. For now. "Mother, I saw something." Chi suddenly said, quietly, as they watched the sunrise together. She momentarily glanced away, feeling conflicting emotions arise. She could still picture him in her mind, like he was right in front of her. "...something in his eyes. I think it was… regret." One of Arvalis's ears flicked. She stared at the sun for a while longer, before she turned. "...come." She said gently, intending to return to their sacred tree. This would not be the last time they would face the hunter and his companion in battle, and they would have to prepare. But until then… they had much else to do. The forest needed guarding from many kinds of predators, and more than that, the critters who were caught in the storm would need aid. "We will discuss this at home." Chi had a determined look, giving a firm nod. Together, they trotted side by side as they headed through the trees and left behind the secluded glade, Syn and Sol in tow. But even then, her thoughts drifted back to the confrontation and she realized that she, too, felt regret. It was that day the young dragoness learned there was much more to the Spirideer than what she had thought… and much more to the complexity of the heart, for the hunter she had thought heartless had forged the most powerful heartbond known to Sornieth. Heartbonds are not chosen, but a stroke of fate

Deep in the wilds, Chi and Arvalis pursue a terrible enemy…

A jagged spear of lightning cut down an ominous sky, writhing and twisting.

She could not look long as rain pelted her blinking eyes, having already soaked her through, cold and unforgiving but not as much as the creature she pursued…

The leaves rustled, whispering to one another. "You coward!"

Alone, in the cold and dark, she was just a singular flame, yet her passion burned like a wildfire.

And sooner or later, she had to learn how easily it could be extinguished. His jaws parted and an ominous glow rose from his throat, and right before her attack struck him, he returned in kind. Her wide eyes reflected the sudden wave of scarlet that met her fiery breath head on, and the last thing she saw as it continued to speedily barrel towards her was red.

When she stirred again… she realized she was in the mud. She slowly lifted her spinning head, every bone in her body sore and her vision bleary. "W-what?" She gasped, her soft voice wrought with disbelief and a plunge into terror. "What have you done…"

Every flame she attempted to summon turned into a piddling, unimpressive sliver of amber, barely flickering as it extinguished in the rain with barely a hiss. She had seen this before. This twisted, distorted magic. It was how he hunted them… the Spirideer. It was how he would weaken them before he struck the final blow and stole away their soul orbs to an unknown fate, a terrible feat that should have been impossible. Spirideer were not slaves. They did not deserve to live in fear. Yet he was no ordinary dragon, and he did not care for their sentiments.

She felt drained, like a barrier lay between her and the land. She could not charge herself from the elements, and her natural reserve of magic was slumbering inside her, refusing to awaken no matter how hard she tried. She tried to get up as he slowly drew closer with menacing steps. Chi shivered in the cold as the sky continued to weep, no longer feeling the usual flicker of her inner flame to keep her warm.

The revenant was standing above her now.

"Do you even have a heart? …does it beat?" She whispered, the storm swallowing her quivering voice. But he had heard her and he paused. His eyes pulsed dangerously behind his mantle. Chi held her breath as she stared at him. Fear, fury and the desire to know blended into one, and then she saw something strange swirl in the depths of his piercing, predatory gaze.

He was not quick enough to protect himself and suffered a grievous blow that sent him soaring away, colliding with a tree not unlike what he had just done to her. He collapsed soundlessly.

Chi gasped, her eyes wide. "Mother!"

Arvalis descended down in front of her, the airy chimes swinging on her staff, a comforting ring among the scream of the storm.

"ARVALIS!"

That furious roar was enough to shake the bravest, fiercest creature to the very core. The thunder was merely an encore. The accursed hunter stood at his full height across the glade, the calm composure he'd once carried shattered into something unrecognizable. He was overcome by a beastly nature, curls of smoke escaping from between his snarling fangs, his long claws hooked into the earth but longing to carve something that would bleed.

94ENKAn.png

It was unmistakable…

…he had heartbonded with it.

"Mother!"

Arvalis steadily drew back.

It… must be some trick…"

But Arvalis knew that simply was not true.

"O-oh!"

Arvalis brought down one wing to gaze at the withering crystals that cut into her feathers, their glow beginning to dim already. They were fading on their own, just like the rest of them in the clearing, but she couldn't deny that she felt slightly hollower on the inside… like they had taken a bite out of her magic, and it would take time for it to replenish. "This withering magic… all along… it was his own Spirideer that granted him the power."

"How?!" Chi demanded again, practically crying out in disbelief. "H-how could a Spirideer… why would a Spirideer do that? Those crystals… it must be how he makes his crossbow bolts! And his breath. All of it. Helping him shatter its own kind…"

"There was great turmoil within that Spirideer." Arvalis plucked a shard from her wings, holding it between her golden claws and watching as it dwindled into smoke. Her eyes shimmered with grim curiosity. "Just as there is within him…"

"I don't understand…" The Fae whined. So many unanswered questions, most of them terrifying. "Can a Spirideer be… corrupt?"

"No… it is a choice. But the pains of our past often can blind our future."

Chi felt her heart sink. That sounded all too familiar right now, and when their eyes met, she knew. She bowed her head, trying not to cry again. "I'm sorry…. I'm sorry for not waiting! I was just so… angry. I couldn't take it, thinking of what he was going to do to the deer if we were even a second too late!"

"Do not blame yourself, Chi…" Arvalis lightly brought a hand under her chin, tilting her head back up. "You are so very brave… the Spirideer are lucky to have you to protect them. But this was a lesson you should not ignore. No matter how furious you are, you must remember that you will always find true strength in your friends and allies…"

A few stray tears glided down her cheeks, like diamonds.

It will be safe to touch you."

"...okay…" Chi murmured, though still slightly doubtful, if only because the whole ordeal had shaken her up… but now her entire family was here, she felt stronger.

I think it was… regret."

One of Arvalis's ears flicked. "We will discuss this at home."

Chi had a determined look, giving a firm nod.
