Eternal is complete! This was super fun to write and I thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to write their story!

If you would like anything edited, please send me a PM and we can work it out! <3

The sky overhead was cloudy, the heavens threatening a thunderstorm. Dragons hurriedly rushed through the city in an attempt to get to cover before the rain began. A small yellow snake followed suit, slithering up a large golden dragon statue to take shelter on higher ground. Rain began to fall, starting as a light sprinkle before turning into a downpour.

Why can’t I move?

The being that was the statue did not yet realize it was no longer animated, yet was still within this realm. The creature tried to move a leg, but was unable to. Fear began to immediately swell within them, a feeling of helplessness eating them to the core. A voice suddenly spoke, but sounded as if it entered directly into the creature’s mind. Its tone was quiet and soft, yet a hint of superiority could still be heard.

You’re a statue, darling.

If the dragon was still able to scream, they would have at that moment. They tried to form words, but nothing would come out. The statue attempted to calm itself down, their thoughts racing. After a few minutes of what would normally be deep breaths, the creature thought of one sentence in their mind and focused hard on it; Their own voice inside their head shook in fear.

Who and what are you?

Much to the creature’s surprise, the voice replied.

You may not like this answer, but I’m the snake wrapped around your neck. I don’t recall a statue of your nature being here, but I rather like this spot now, y’know? What did they call you when you were, er, more alive?

The creature slowly began to come to terms with the fact that they could speak telepathically, even if it was just with a snake. Though, they soon realized that they could not recall their name. The statue focused on the words within their mind again, curiosity beginning to overcome the fear.

I… don’t know my name. Am I going to be like this for all of eternity?

The snake remained curled around the statue’s neck, still seeking cover from the pouring rain. The streets were now empty of dragons and puddles had formed along the low spots in the roads. The snake’s soft voice chuckled within the statue’s mind before speaking once more.

Eternity? Unfortunately, yes. As for a name, I think Eternal suits you quite well now! I’ve rather taken a liking to you, dragon statue. I sensed something was off about you to be quite honest-the details seemed a touch too immaculate, y’know? Gold was just a bit too bright. Armor seemed a touch too polished. Eyes too full of life.

Eternal let the snake’s words sink in for a minute. Life. What happened to their family and friends? Did anyone know they were missing? Was their memory wiped from their minds? The creature let their thoughts wander, memories of their past life flooding in. Eternal had more questions than answers at the moment. They wished they knew who or what they wronged while truly alive to end up as a living statue. Eternal was suddenly overwhelmed with grief, yet thankful they had at least had something to talk to. They focused on speaking to the snake again, the tone in their mind rather somber.

Please don’t leave me.

The small snake slithered around towards the head of the statue, raindrops plopping down onto its scales. It positioned itself so it was looking into the creature’s eye, unknowing if they could even see it.

Darling, I’m not going anywhere. I told you, I like this spot. You’re unnaturally warm and I haven’t yet met anyone else who can hear me.

The small animal stared into the statue’s eye for a few more moments before returning to its original spot around their neck. Eternal remained silent for a while, lightning striking in the distance and the booming thunder quickly following. They realized the method of telepathy was becoming easier as they thought of something else to their newfound companion.

So, what exactly do I do now? Wait until the end of time for myself to crumble?

The small animal chuckled softly within Eternal’s mind, its tone still gentle and soothing. The rain was beginning to ease up, the dark clouds above growing further apart as the sun threatened to part them and peek through.

You accept this new fate and make the best of it. There is no use in being miserable for all of eternity. Bask in the memories you created while alive and flourish in the ones that those around you are creating with each passing day. Life may be short, but you are everlasting.

Eternal let the snake’s words sink in for a moment, the sun now casting shadows along the muddy roads. Its words helped release the remaining fear inside their mind, the earlier panic dissipating. The world around the statue began to come to life again as dragons left the shelter of buildings and shops and entered the streets. Hatchlings laughed as they leapt into puddles, splashing their siblings with the muddy water. Birds chirped as they fluttered down from their nests, the earth alive once more.

The statue remained silent, taking in everything that was happening around them. Not a single one of those passing by knew that they had once been truly alive and that they were now a decorated golden statue along a street. The snake’s serene voice echoed through Eternal’s head, repeating its previous words.

...You are everlasting.
