Fading Fogs Hatchery- Ice/Shadow subspecies Thank you @Umbra for the original idea/lore/artwork! All hatchlings come with fading fog art/lore! [columns] The Shadowbinder glared sourly at the murky sludge of the Obscured Crescent. It had been an unusually strong winter this year and most of her shadow dragons shivered and huddled in their dens, unable to amuse her with their mischievous romping. The gentle river of the driftwood drag had slightly iced over, and even the Shadowbinder herself had to produce a little extra sludge in order to be comfortable. "Now this is getting ridiculous," she groused. "The Icewarden is becoming far too bold. He oversteps his boundaries and needs to be humbled, if this winter is to end at all!" The Shadowbinder pondered to herself. A gleeful grin graced her features, and she called to Hallia, one of her favored shadowsneaks. [nextcol] [/columns] [columns] [nextcol]"I tire of this unnatural winter, my stealthy one. I have a task for you. It will be dangerous, but high risk yields great reward." "All the more thrilling," replied Hallia eagerly. "I want you to journey to the Fortress of Ends. It is dangerous to even attempt to approach the Icewarden, but you will have my protection, and with stealth and luck, he won't even know you are there." The Shadowbinder leaned forward and breathed gently on Hallia, covering her in a thin film. It made her scales dull and nearly translucent. "It will take some skill to go unseen in such stark whiteness. But here is a little of my power, and it will also keep you warm even in that miserable place. I want you to find and bring back one of the Icewardens treasured stones. Which one doesn't matter, only it must be one from his inner sanctum. It is there he keeps his most powerful trinkets. Predictable hiding place," scoffed the Shadowbinder. "Now go, do not fail and take care, my shadow." Hallia dipped her head and took flight. [/columns] [columns]Her harrowing journey through the Icefield became a legend among the shadowclans, and she never was quite the same afterwards. But that is a tale for another time. The end of it was, she returned successfully to her deity with a simple, smooth grey stone. "I know not what powers this stone may have," she explained. "It looks like an ordinary rock to me. But I took it from a pedestal just outside the lair of the Icewarden himself." "Excellent! You have earned my favor always, dark child. And now I will show that frozen fool what happens to those who take more than their due in my territory." With her shadowsneak following curiously, the Shadowbinder took the stone to a small, secluded pool shrouded with dense trees. She dropped the stone in the deep water. Instantly, a loud cracking sound split the air. The water had frozen solid, and now a white mist rose forebodingly from the surface. Hallia noticed at once that although she could feel a sharp chill coming from the pool, the area around it was warm and comfortable. [nextcol][/columns] [columns] [nextcol]"Now, you see, my children will never need to suffer the inconvenience of winters grasp. For a relic of the Icewarden draws the chill to it," the Shadowbinder explained with mirth. Hallia giggled, "Imagine the look on the Icewardens face when it's the dead middle of winter and we're all lounging around like skycats!" "Yes, and in the summer heat, we will have our own little cooling oasis. Let my children laugh in the face of the Icewarden, and the Gladekeeper too, with her eternal shifting weather, and the Flamecaller with her precious heat. None of the other gods can outwit me." And the two laughed uproariously at their own cleverness. But although the relic did provide these benefits, the Shadowbinder was about to find that she had taken more from the Icewarden than she had counted on. For it was soon discovered that an egg nested near or even on the frozen pool would take on unusual properties. The shell would become translucent, so that one could clearly see the embryo developing inside. The hatchling, when it was born, would be pale as mist, and, as many would say, stick out like an infected claw against the murky surroundings.[/columns] [columns] Aside from a trick of suddenly slipping out of harms way, these dragons had little to no elemental power. And worst of all- every now and then, one would be born with icy eyes, and as adults would invariably be drawn to travel to the Southern Icefields, for what purpose the Shadowbinder could not uncover. Resentfully, she decreed that no dragon was allowed to nest near the pool. Naturally this made it a point of pride to do so anyways when no one was looking. The eggs themselves blended so well with their surroundings, and the mist always hung so thick and heavy, it was unthinkable for a respectable shadow dragon to be caught doing this. And so, humiliatingly, a tiny bit of the Tangled Wood now belonged to the Icewarden. Sometimes, when the shadowy deity wandered near her frozen pool, she thought she could catch a glimpse of cold glowing eyes in its depths. Then she would sneer angrily and turn away. And somewhere in the howling cold, the Icewarden smiled. [nextcol][/columns] A fading fog dragon has shadow or ice eyes. These dragons are pale and much of their coloring is white. Often, they'll have patches of scales that are translucent. Since their white scales reflect light, they stand out brightly in the tangled woods, and can be mistaken for a ghost from afar. They have no real elemental power, but are nimble and flexible, and some dragons swear they can slip from an enemies grasp like mist. A half rank fading fog dragon comes from an egg nested on the pool shore. They may have more variation in color and somewhat less white. Half ranks are always shadow element, and may be better at fitting in with their clan, especially if they are darker. Like a true fading fog, they have no magic based elemental powers. [columns]A shadow eyed dragon often longs to fit in, but can be ridiculed for being so conspicuous, or become a target for practical jokes. Even though they can move silently, they are too easy to see in most places. They do have exceptional eyesight and can move comfortably in almost total darkness, where they are less easily seen from a distance. [nextcol]An ice eyed dragon is less likely to feel isolated, but more likely to leave the wood all together. Every one of them will make at least one journey to the ice fields in their life. No one knows whether it is instinct or involves the Icewarden, and those who return won't tell. While they have no real elemental power, they are very resistant to cold and do well in the harshest ice regions.[/columns]
