Let us know your thoughts!

This is not yet a competition, but just a preliminary group brainstorm to get an idea of what you would like to see/not see to address the particular breeds, lore, and genes of Ancients.

- We would like to incorporate Gaolers and future ancients into the Necromancer subspecies

- Post lore ideas, scries, wishes below!

Modern Necromancers knew not what emerged along side the Ancient Ones. Dragons that had taken the trial when the Wyrmwound was young, and more . . .volatile. But soon they'd recognize the blessing of the Plaguebringer on some of these ancient Necromancers. Gene ideas: Shaggy - Clean looking in a similar vein as Iridescent, adds a little contrast without being 'busy' to look at. Weathered - adds a look of the limbs where dipped in blood/fluid and makes the dragon look more dangerous (imo). Game wise it's only obtainable through the coliseum which could indicate in lore the battle with the infection within the trials Falcon - As mentioned in Ariel's blub, in some colors the pattern kinda reminds me of when skin sometimes becomes discolored where it's scared. and the color shifts match with Shaggy as well Shardflank - Shards of infection coming out of the dragon, these could be broken off and used as makeshift weapons, or even delayed poisons. My headcannon is that once removed they slowly 'melt' over time. Dragons with shardflank are often avoided due to the risk of shard breakage.

In general, Shaggy is a must have for me, Thycaline is both an existing Necro gene and it looks good, same with Daub, Breakup is absolutely heavenly (just look at that mane!) and Weathered, Shardflank and Scorpion make for some interesting lore opportunities (plus they look great!). As for the Ghouls, perhaps they could have some genes separate from the rest of the necros (like how Saturn is for Ghouls only right now). This gene combination just happens to be my favorite for both Ghoul types. EDIT: Lore idea, since Gaolers in the official lore have different orders, what if the large range of tertiary genes reflects that? It doesn’t need to be “This Gaoler was a Sentry, so he develops Shardflank” it could be more like “This Gaoler developed Shardflank, and since most Gaolers who develop Shardflank are priests, that is what can be expected of this Gaoler”. Perhaps different genes can even mean that they are naturally more adept at certain things, and so Gaolers have created a ranking system based on that? It wouldn’t need to be a rigid “This Gaoler has this role because of this gene”, the different roles based on different genes would just be guidelines to follow when writing lore, similar to eye types. This could fix the problem of not being able to put apparel on Gaolers, and therefor, Gaolers not being able to wear Necromantic symbols.

The Necroler: (i am so good with names: Necro[mancer]+[Gao]ler)] First of all: I think all "artbreaking" genes, like Shardflank, Scorpion and Gnarlhorns could be part of some mutation and fit nicely as a result of the trials if they Gaoler doesnt have it already and could easily make up as Symbols alone, but dont have to be. Overall, i did some testing and these Genes do fit somewhat good. Primary: Bar, Phantom, Shaggy Secondary: Daub, Breakup?, Hex, Spirit, Streak, Striation, Stripes Tritary: Gnarlhorns, Scorpion, Shardflank, Thylacine, Weathered, Blossom (Neutralized Ghoul only) Here some Scries i did: [morphology=221221] [morphology=221225] [morphology=221228] [morphology=221222] [morphology=221232] [morphology=221226] Thylacine is interesting since it pretty much coveres anything that a Secondary Gene brings, so it offers other Secondaries a spot that are normally not part of the Necromancers. Like Hex & Breakup [morphology=221246] [morphology=221253] Blossom is utterly fantastic in Tarnish! I think Neutralized Ghoul truely profit from it and lorewise it could be part of starting decomposition with the flowers rapidly growing and pulverise to dust/ash within a few days and restart the cycle again. The dust/ash could have strange properties....the options are quite endless going with it. Lorewise i think some Necrolers could have split from Icewarden and went to Plaguebringer, seeking help against the Shade with mutations (or tried to free themself of the Shades influence) and the Powers of Necromancers. This could have happend before they locked themself away of after they got intruduced back to Sorneith, i assume the later because it makes more sense with the lore. So they are rather new to the Necromancer trials, which explains why there are so few and havent quite found thier place yet, but the unique mutations (Tert) open the eyes for more potential within other races. (aka future ancients)

No real ideas re: what requirements there should be given the difference in gene lineup between ancient and modern dragons, but I do think the most important question to answer is why these other dragons, born and bound in their origin to another element might seek out and then bear nests to other elements, and why those children might then seek to take the trials.

After that, I think the question becomes how they take the trials - it seems likely to me that the Plaguebringer's plague is a modern and constantly developing disease, so a past necromancer cannot prepare a new triallist so they can be sure to succeed (unless that IS a thing in which case why have we not played with that idea sooner? Is that how Ichorclaw gets so many graduates, does he prep them to resist and adapt to prior plague strains? CELL TELL ME.). Because of this an archaic breed might fare phenomenally badly to it, due to lack of exposure (see how rapidly smallpox decimated populations when Europeans arrived in the Americas) or it might be that the age of the breed confers a degree of resilience due to how long-lasting they've proven - it could even vary depending on breed.

Then the question is: in what way do the abilities of an ancient dragon breed compare to a modern dragon - if they're an archaic form of modern dragons, if the plague takes them differently then they're going to come out with different capabilities. Likewise, if these ancient breeds all were made singularly by one god then those godly allegiances will likely affect what they're capable of - I think going off the lore we established for Primal Eyes would probably be helpful here, but YMMV. There's also the mixing of ancient breeds with ancient single-element origins... and the ones now born to new nests with new elemental ties for all their breed's origin - what impact might that have.

So, in summary, the questions I think we need answers to before we really start working to bring Gaolers and other Ancients into the subspecies are:

1) Why do these Ancients, given an inherent link from their very making to another element, come to Plague and attempt the trials? Do they go with the Icewarden's blessing to seek new strength in preparation to fight the Shade? Do they go because they feel abandoned by the Icewarden and seek connection to a (seemingly) more active god?

2) How can they take the trials and what effect do the trials have on a more archaic form of dragon? Is this why their gene requirement will be different - the plague has a different effect? Are they more prone to failure? Success? Is there variation between different varieties of Ancient?

3) For those Ancients that pass the trials, in what ways to their abilities contrast to those of Modern Necromancers? Are they stronger? Weaker? More limited or linked to the elemental origin of their breed? How do they feel about it - resentful, happy, curious?

4) If there is variation between Ancient breeds based on elemental origin (both of the breed itself and of the dragon's birth) what impact does this then have on their abilities as a Necromancer? Do they have more niche capabilities? Does a Gaoler born to shadow who becomes a Necromancer draw from shadow heritage more than ice? less than ice? equal to ice? If both equally at play does this create niche and specific crossover specialists?

5) How in the hells is the Council going to respond to these Ancients taking the trials, and what are they going to do when the inevitable eldritch abominations of Plague and Shadow arrive?

Kind of built along the same concept as Youbi's idea but pulling in some site lore ideas.

Originating from a group of Seekers who grew ill while hunting for Shade-touched along the Rotrock Rim, these gaolers maintain a connection to their ancient oath by seeking a strain of plague that can cleanse the Shade from dragons.

They believe that with work and meditation the PlagueBringer will gift them the solution. Long hidden, snatching subjects where they could rumors of other gaolers in the world and whispers from the Mother that they are not alone have finally drawn them forth.

Few in number they now seek the modern necromancers to learn what they know and their long lost kin to swell their numbers.
