~ Poetry Pirate's Poetry Contest Map ~

_____Windruffles’ ire grew as she left the first-aid tent and returned to the airship. With the pavilion in shambles and half the judges injured, it looked like the poetry contest would have to be cancelled. Someone should be held accountable, preferably the perpetrators of this disaster!
_____As she neared the ship, a long wooden gangplank unfolded from the center of the hull to reveal a red-carpeted stair. When the smoke cleared the doorway, a splendid Spiral emerged slowly and gracefully, his long pale coat blinding in the midday sun. The matching tricorn on his head perched at a jaunty angle with black plumes cascading behind. A shining cutlass hung at his side, and a rare Harlequin Feathercroak clung to his arm. This was certainly a swashbuckler of the first order.

_____As the dragon’s boots met the soft, spring grass, he paused--posed even--and inhaled deeply as he closed his eyes. When he spoke, his soft voice carried easily to the surrounding crowd.

“Sornieth offers all who journey far
Adventures fraught wit’ mortal care an’ woe;
Windfalls o’ treasure unexpected are,
Yet seem t’ follow ev’rywhere I go.

Me heart called me away from this Plateau,
T’ far horizons way beyond me view.
Where me heartbeat compels me, I must go
T’ nigh agin return t’ home, t’ you.

O! I have seen the stars an’ sailed the heights,
T’ now see ye brings me such great delight!”

His familiar flapped its wings and, to the surprise and delight of the gathered dragons, he sang:

"Home, home, far away!
Where the Spirals and Skydancers play!
Where Windsinger flies
Through pure azure skies,
And the breezes are blowing all day! -- Squawk!"

_____The Spiral dragon laughed, but Windruffles had had enough. She strode purposefully up to him as he bowed to polite applause.
_____He turned at her approach and swept off his hat in another graceful bow. “Greetings, Fair One! Capt’n Kloudy Keats, at yer serv--”
_____“Remove your ship from my Poetry Pavilion this instant!” Windruffles exploded.
_____“Ah. Yes. I do ‘pologize sincerely fer that. Y’see, we had a rather amusin’ misadventure…” He trailed off at Windruffle’s glare. “Long n’ short ‘s that we are beached, aground, in need o’ repair, that's to say...shipwrecked. ‘Tis unfortunate that we came to berth,” the Captain glanced briefly at the wreckage of the pavilion and winced, “here, but I've been informed no lives were lost, so--”
_____“THIS is nothing short of disaster!” Windruffles gestured wildly toward the leaning ship. “One of our judges has a sprained ankle, both are severely shaken and have withdrawn from judging! The stage is a complete loss! All the prizes are crushed beneath your wreck of a ship! There is absolutely no way our Poetry Contest can continue!” Windruffles took pride in her professionalism, but under the circumstances she could not hold back her temper.
_____Strangely, Captain Keats perked up, clapping his hands. “A Poetry Contest! Y’don’t say! I’ve always wanted t’ participate in one of those!”

The Poetry Must Go On!

_____“I regret, me Poetess, that we have rather thoroughly destroyed yer well-laid plans fer yer poetry contest, however, we of th’ Jolly Rhymer shall host yer event. All will be well!”
_____Windruffles blinked a few times. “But…but…”
_____There was a stir in the crowd and Windruffles saw her friend and fellow judge, Sequoia, coming toward them. The tall Skydancer opened her mouth to greet her Tundra friend, but stopped when she beheld the swashbuckling dragon by Windruffle's side.
_____“Oh, Sequoia!” Windruffles collapsed against the Skydancer. “This…airship…captain… hosting Poetry Contest…” was all the Tundra could eek out.
_____“How generous.” Sequoia turned a friendly face to the Captain, who once again doffed his hat and performed a courteous bow.
_____“Captain Kloudy Keats, of th’ Jolly Rhymer, at yer service!”
_____With a quick scan of the scene, Sequoia easily took control of the situation. “And I’m Sequoia. Captain, let's go over the details beneath that nearby oak tree? We have so much to discuss!”

Rules, not just Guidelines

Dragons from all flights are eligible to participate.
You may enter any or all categories, only one poem per category.
Use the official entry form (see below). Enter each poem on a separate form, in a separate post. Repeat: One poem, one form, one post.
Posts are final. Do not edit previous posts.
Your poem must be written by you.
Your poem must be in English.
Your poem must have a title to facilitate Listing and Judging.
Your poem must be 1000 words or less. You may use any structural form unless noted otherwise by the category (i.e. the Haiku category must have 3 lines).
Observe FR guidelines prohibiting foul language, explicitness or negativity against another player. Some light violence is permitted (Sky Pirates, after all!)
Only your poem will be judged. However, we invite you to Role Play with us!
You can only win one prize package. If one poet wins multiple prizes, the highest award will be given and the other slots will be reassigned. Let's spread the wealth! (This does not include special prizes.).

~ Poetry Pirate's Poetry Contest Map ~

New Judges Found!

_____Before Sequoia could continue, the Captain held up a paw. “Th’ Poetess Windruffles explained ev’rythin’ quite plain an’ thorough, m’dear,” Captain Keats gave Windruffles an audacious wink. “An’ I think I have a solution.” He turned and called up to the ship.
_____“Davnan! Line’em up ashore!”
_____First Mate Davnan blew his bosun's whistle and the crew spilled out and formed a single, somewhat disheveled, line beside the ship.
_____Keats turned back to Sequoia and Windruffles, who had regained her composure. “We’re a motley crew, I’ll warrant ye, but me an’ me mates are a civilized lot, quite well-read, really.”
_____The Captain addressed his crew. “These Poetesses are in need o’ a few likely dragons to help judge their poetry wing-doo. Whaddya say, me hearties?"
_____Amid whoops and hollers, two dragons stepped boldly forward: a handsome Bogsneak with a flashing gold medallion on his chest, and a graceful Skydancer sporting floral fans on her wings. A third, a young Spiral with soot covering their claws, was pushed up by their encouraging mates. The Spiral squared their shoulders and stood proudly, if nervously, beside the other two.
_____“An’ there you have it, ladies! Riverat, Vespera, Whizbang! You’ll be answerin’ to these lovely Poetesses for the duration of the Jamboree! Off ye go!”

Let your creative energy flow,
proofread and edit what you show.
We judges will be scrutinizing,
discussing all and deciding.
A Master Poet of extraordinary nonsense,
I love playful poems and will adore your parlance.
Go all out and wax poetic,
or at least have some fun and a pirate aesthetic!

Keep your writing light and free as the wind, but most importantly, enjoy yourself and have fun!

Dyslexic see the written word differently. But that doesn't mean they don't love it. Just that they come at it from a different angle. Like poetry. More abstract.

New Categories Chosen!

_____Riverrat the Bogsneak pointed to the torn Categories poster on the table. “This one ‘ere, “Windy Days” what is that? A lil’ ole breeze ‘ere an’ there. That’s not inspiring! Th’ wind is everywhere, there’s no stopping at th’ border. Had you sailed the skies like we ‘ave, felt th’ wind in your sails, ah, then you'd feel it in yer bones.” His eyes lit up and he quickly scribbled on a new scroll. “That’s it! ‘Wind In Your Sails!’”

_____The other Skydancer, Vespera, patted her familiar,

“Helming us through the dusking storms
My Marren indispensable will forever stay
I make sure she knows she’s loved
And appreciated feels each day...

Daft, but true that many folk
For granted take their compatriots.
Make it right with tender words
Pay tribute to our faithful companions!!”

_____Whizbang the Spiral bounced with excitement. “What about Limericks? Laugh-out-loud, ludicrous limericks! You know, ‘I once had an aunt from the Steppes--”
_____“Yes,” Sequoia cut Whizbang off, “we all know how that one ends.” Sequoia blushed for a moment, “I always had a soft spot for a good love poem. But not tragic. Something sweet and gentle.”
_____“Love is in the Air?” Windruffles suggested. Sequoia nodded and Riverat added it to the scroll.
_____Windruffles looked over the new Categories list. “Okay,” she conceded. “But Haiku stays. It’s tradition.”
_____Just then Captain Keats arrived, snatching the scroll from Riverat. "What 'ave ye all been cookin' up?" He frowned, then grabbed the quill and wrote furiously at the bottom of the list. "Now'yer all set! Post that up!"

__Wind in Your Sails__

In a celebration of wind, give us a fitting ode or rhyme
dedicated to the breezes and gusts around us.

__Love is in the Air__

For all sorts o' tall tales o’ the heart,
be it sonnets, admiration, acrostics, o’ grievin'.

__Faithful Familiars__

Commemorate the loyalty and love of your familiars!
Dedicate a poem to their craziness, quirks,
and their undeniable help in our lives.

__Ludicrous Limericks[__

Caricature? Parody? Slapstick and farce? Oh yeah!
Make the tent roar with laughter!
This should be verse of three long and two short lines
rhyming AABBA in anapestic meter. (Keep it Clean!)

__Hooked on Haiku__

Rhyming forms not to your liking?
Try your quill at Haiku! Any topic you like,
but it must have 3 lines with 5-7-5 syllables only!

__Poet Like a Pirate__

Impress the Captain with your epic pirate poems
about buried treasure, storms, old ships,
and the Pirate's Life!
Our crew will raise a hook if'n ye speak
in their language!

Hop to it!” [color=transparent]_____[/color]“Aye-aye, Cap’n!” [color=transparent]_____[/color]As the bosun’s whistle sounded, the crew abandoned their clean up and swarmed back into the ship. They soon reappeared, pouring down the gangplank bearing all manner of crates and trunks. There were cloth garment bags and paper-wrapped parcels and, indeed, hatboxes, not to mention a variety of cages holding strange and exotic beasts. The pile from the ship’s hold was soon taller than an Imperial! Strange and indefinable objects glittered in the sunlight. [color=transparent]_____[/color]“This trove should go a ways toward payin’ fer any damages,” Captain Keats startled the judges as he approached their “office” beneath the oak tree. He continued with a twinkle in his eye. “As well, it should spice up th’ prizes fer th’ winners a bit, eh?” Prize Chests are still being filled, please forgive the delay. It's not that we don't have the things, we have a TON of things, we're just delayed in sorting everything into the proper piles and then coding it all up. Will slowly fill it out this week, honest! ~ Poetry Pirate's Poetry Contest Map ~

_____The ship's crew worked hard at cleaning up the wreckage of the Poetry Pavilion. Captain Keats walked among them, surveying the damage. It was complete.
_____Suddenly he clapped his hands and gave a loud, piercing whistle. “Davnan!”
_____Almost immediately the Coatl appeared at his side. “Captain, sir!”
_____“Empty th’ holds, Davnan! I want ev’ry trunk, every crate, satchel or hatbox! Bring ‘em all ashore an’ line ‘em up portside. Hop to it!”
_____“Aye-aye, Cap’n!”
_____As the bosun’s whistle sounded, the crew abandoned their clean up and swarmed back into the ship. They soon reappeared, pouring down the gangplank bearing all manner of crates and trunks. There were cloth garment bags and paper-wrapped parcels and, indeed, hatboxes, not to mention a variety of cages holding strange and exotic beasts. The pile from the ship’s hold was soon taller than an Imperial! Strange and indefinable objects glittered in the sunlight.
_____“This trove should go a ways toward payin’ fer any damages,” Captain Keats startled the judges as he approached their “office” beneath the oak tree. He continued with a twinkle in his eye. “As well, it should spice up th’ prizes fer th’ winners a bit, eh?”

Prize Chests are still being filled, please forgive the delay. It's not that we don't have the things, we have a TON of things, we're just delayed in sorting everything into the proper piles and then coding it all up. Will slowly fill it out this week, honest! _____“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Windruffles straightened her shoulders. “Though I don’t understand the Captain insisting on that last poem category: Poet Like a Pirate. What was that about?”
_____Her friend chuckled. “Oh Windruffles, how do you think they acquired all this treasure?”
_____“Well, it’s not like they’re pirates…” When Sequoia merely stared at her, Windruffles’ own eyes grew wide as saucers. The Skydancer patted her shoulder in sympathy.
_____“You’ve been working with them all week. It’s going to be fine. I can feel it.”
_____“Mistress Poetesses?” Riverat hollered as he, Vespera, and Whizbang walked up to them under the tree, excited yet nervous. “The crowd be getting a wee bit restless."
_____How far they had come! Just a few days ago they had been strangers, unable to see eye to eye. Windruffles turned to her new team of judges. “Thank you, Riverat. Well then, we shan’t keep them waiting! Vespera, would you lead us out?”
