Rivereth is a cursed underwater kingdom in the Sea of a Thousand Currents built upon the remains of an Emperor and lorded over by descendants of the main head of the ancient beast. The family line was cursed long ago and forced into the monarchy for eternity as penance for the Emperor's creation.
This tale however, will document the ending of the feud between the two rival noble families that have long dwelt within this ancient kingdom; the Solari and the Lunaris.

Rose leaned on the balcony with her head resting on the coral railing. Below her was the expansive throne room of the royal family of Rivereth. The main level was decorated with many ancient royal artifacts and tapestries all leading to the two blue thrones in the center of the pavilion. Both thrones were identical in every way except for the large white gem fitted into an ornate slot above the left throne and a dark sapphire gem fitted into the throne on the right. The sapphire was meant to represent the King's right to rule and the white gem signified the Queen's duty to the protection of Rivereth.
She sighed and closed her eyes. She had known all this for many years, since she first started working in the palace, but it was only until recently that it started applying to her. A memory flashed before her of the last time she was on this balcony.
"Dathan!" She screamed as she jumped from railing. The assassin's dart was already soaring through the water and the royal guards weren't going to make it to the King in time but she could. The shadows in the room were dark enough for her to attempt it. As many faces began to look in her direction as she fell through the water from the second story, Rose only cared about one set of eyes. Dathan had shifted his gaze to her and they widened to see her dark wings splayed out as if she were ready to soar in midair.
She felt the ancient Lunaris power humming inside her and at precisely the moment when the assassin's dart was three quarter's of the way to the King's heart she light jumped. Her body became nothing more than a streak of purple moonlight for the briefest of seconds before she collided with the King; sending them both flying across the throne room. The dart whizzed by and thunked harmlessly into the middle of the blue stone throne.
Rose had saved Dathan's life that day and revealed to the world at large that she was related to the Lunaris family. The light jumping technique she used was an uncommon ability only born to those in the Lunaris family line. The news of her bravery spread quickly throughout the kingdom and soon everyone knew the story of the hidden Lunaris who had saved the King.
This had terrified her at first. After so many years of fearing discovery by either the Lunaris or Solari families, having so many dragons know at least half of her parentage was frightening but of course, Dathan would never let either family hurt her now. She had never told her dear friend that she was both a Lunaris and a Solari (and the context for why she feared retaliation from both families) before the assassination attempt. It was a secret she kept from everyone in her life out of self-preservation.
Queen Rosaria Lunaris-Solari Hollowsight stood up from the balcony and continued her journey down the long second story corridor above the throne room. She didn't like all the attention for what she'd done. Dragons looked at her with awe and respect now that they never gave her before (of course part of this was also due to her being the new queen). She hadn't done anything Dathan wouldn't have done for her. The King was the dragon she loved, had loved for a long time, most in the world, he was the father to her beautiful daughters, and he was her closest friend. She wouldn't be able to live in a world without him.

Rose swam through the crowded square wearing a long, blue twice-dyed cloak that covered her face and body. She kept her recognizable wings tight against her side and used only her limbs and tail to swim. It felt awkward, normally she used her wings to help her maneuver in the water, but she didn't want to be recognized and she wasn't supposed to be out here anyway. Dathan was dealing with several complicated matters today regarding emissaries from Tritoran trying to smooth over the whole we-tried-to-kill-you business.
Two royal guards, large imposing guardians, swam beside her. Dragons turned curiously when they passed but it wasn't uncommon for noble dragons to travel the city with escorts and she had made her companions change out of the royal palace uniform in favor of lighter, less recognizable armor.
She stopped in front of the dark gates guarding the main Lunaris mansion. Gates
and height barriers weren't just for show in the underwater kingdom of Rivereth. Conventionally speaking, many dragons who visit the Sea of a Thousand Currents are confounded when they try to just swim over the top of gates and walls and find that they cannot. Invisible water magic keeps most properties in the kingdom and outside safe from unexpected intruders.
However, Rose had an appointment and servant dragon from within the gate, bowed quickly and then opened gate for her. Her escorts followed her inside the Lunaris family dwelling. They were shown into a office with a large window looking out to the coral reefs on the Lunaris property. She had her escorts wait outside the office door, something they both looked apprehensive about but acquiesced to nevertheless. Then she sat down with the matriarch of the Lunaris family and lowered her hood.
"Hello Grandmother," Rose said steadily, belying her inner fear. For her entire life she had feared the dragon sitting across from her. This dragon represented the face of one of the enemies she had been hiding from since birth. Her stomach tightened in response to her hidden stress and she felt vaguely nauseous.
Lady Calypso's intense, inscrutable expression barely changed at the Queen's greeting. On the word "grandmother" something menacing flashed briefly in her eyes for the barest of seconds. This would have made an earlier version of Rose sink into the invisibility of the shadows but she refused to react. This dragon may have information about her family that she had been searching so long for. She would not give into her fear, not anymore. She was no longer the simple street thief jumping from shadow to shadow.
"I have no grandchild," Was Lady Calypso's only response. Her voice was cold and unyielding.
Rose's anger flared at this and she growled, "You had a son!"
The menacing something returned to Lady Calypso's eyes again before vanishing like smoke. Her voice was even colder this time, "I have no son."
Rose gritted her teeth and stood up, "I know you perused my parents into the southern seas. I know they never returned. Tell me what became of them. Please!"
The Lady Calypso remained silent but did not break her gaze with the Queen's. Rose's heart thundered in her chest and her face felt hot with fury. She would get no answers from this old crone. It had been a waste of a morning. She stood up, replaced her hood and said, "Very well. I will find them myself."
"You will never find them," She heard as she swam furiously out of the office.

She would
not give into her fear, not anymore. She was no longer the simple street thief jumping from shadow to shadow.
"I have no grandchild," Was Lady Calypso's only response. Her voice was cold and unyielding.
Rose's anger flared at this and she growled, "You had a son!"

Rose gritted her teeth and stood up, "I know you perused my parents into the southern seas. I know they never returned. Tell me what became of them.
Please!"

Rose did not stop swimming until she was halfway back to the palace. She stopped underneath an ancient pillar and placed the tip of one of her wings to her temple. Her eyes closed as the dizziness overtook her.
"Milady?" Royal Guard Taron asked worriedly.
Rose shook her head and slumped towards the seafloor. Her heart refused to slow which made the nausea in her stomach intensify. She just needed to stop and wait for the episode to pass.
Her escorts mumbled to each other nervously before the darker one, Taron, reached down and helped her to her feet with his wing. Her breath sped as she rose from the floor with the help of both of them.
"Let's get you to the Palace, Milady," Taron's deep voice drifted into her ears. She was vaguely aware of passerby's growing more and more curious about the scene. She nodded slowly in agreement and let her guards help her back to the Palace.

King Dathan Hollowsight paced around his chambers in agitation. His queen lay sleeping on their bed silently; which was strange because Rose was never a silent sleeper. She was always tossing and turning and would wake to the slightest sound. She had been that way since he'd met her those many years ago.
He was now aware of where his wife had gone this morning and the fact that she had gone to Lady Calypso alone, without him, maddened him beyond belief. Anything could have happened! The Lady could have hurt Rose or perhaps she did and this sudden vertigo was a symptom of some crazy Lunaris ability. These thoughts rolled over and over in his head and they were driving him mad.
Rose cut in on his growing insanity by yawning softly and opening her eyes sleepily. She caught sight of her husband pacing the room and groaned loudly; grabbing a pillow and covering her face with it. Dathan stopped immediately and swam to her side. His voice was anxious, "Baby, what's wrong?"
Rose didn't move for a few seconds until finally she threw the pillow aside and stared up into the eyes of her worried husband. She sighed, shook her head, and muttered, "I'm going to kill those two." Referring to her two guardian escorts.
Dathan, knowing immediately what she meant, frowned, "Do not blame them. They did as they were told."
"I didn't want you to know," Rose said softly, not meeting his gaze.
Dathan's expression grew hurt and one of his paws caressed her face. His voice was compassionate, "But why Rose? I would have gone with you. I could have summoned her here."
She finally met his gaze and breathed, "Because I was afraid she wouldn't talk with you there." Tears welled in her eyes and she closed them, forcing the tears into the sea around her. Dathan watched her searchingly with a frown. He hated seeing Rose in pain. It caused him physical pain to see her hurting. He took her hand and squeezed gently.
Rose opened her eyes again and cried softly, "But she didn't say anything anyways. She wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of my father. And..."
"And...?" Dathan prompted.
Rose took a death breath and steadied her voice, "And the old terror just snuk up on me, I guess. I'm sorry Dathan."
The King's expression grew tender and kind and he wrapped his wings around her gently, "The feud between the Lunaris and the Solari can't hurt you anymore, baby. I won't let them. You're safe here and you'll never have to be afraid of them ever again. Not with me here."
Rose cried harder and snuggled into his warm chest, "I know. I love you."
"I love you too, baby but please don't scare me like that again," There was a hint of a smile in his voice.
She chuckled as she kissed the base of neck, "I'll try not too."

Arion sat in his holding cell somewhere in the bowels of the Rivereth Royal Palace. He was drawing on the stone floor with his claw. A darkened line trailed from the point of his claw into the ancient stone. The swirling dark lines didn't make anything interesting. He was just doodling. It was a habit he had when he was deep in thought.
He glanced down at the floor of his cell and his eyes widened. He rubbed his paw scales against the blackened lines furiously and was relieved to find the markings disappearing. When he was finished, the imperial glanced up at the bars of his cell. The guard hadn't moved. He must not have noticed Arion's unconscious vandalism of the prison floor and his subsequent urgent scrubbing.
Arion's eyes closed and he breathed out slowly to steady his racing heart. It would be very dangerous for dragons in Rivereth to discover the peculiar ability that allowed him to etch burns into objects underwater. His trip to Rivereth had brought him more troubles than it, so far, had been worth. What had he found out? Nothing. What leads had he met with? Nobody. How much information had he discovered? Zip and zero.
All he had really succeeded in doing was getting thrown in this jail cell. He rolled his eyes as he corrected that thought, 'Not jail cell but holding cell.' The officials had been very eager to explain that he wasn't under arrest just that he was being 'held' for whatever reason. He was under the impression that some major event had recently occurred to make all the guards and officers in the palace agitated and overly suspicious. At least, that's what he hoped. Maybe this was just a big misunderstanding and he would be sent on his way with a big apology from the King himself. He huffed and snorted sarcastically. Yeah, not if this luck held.
"Why go back there?" Aella argued with Arion as he packed his things in a travel bag. They were in his coral cave connected to the monastery where the monks who raised him resided. Aella was staring out at the vast horizon of coral reefs in the distance. His cave had a window that looked out at the rest of the Fishspine Reef.
Arion turned to stare at Aella's statuesque silhouette in the window, "Because I might be able to discover more about their disappearance."
"It'll be dangerous," Aella's voice was stiff and unhappy.
He sighed, swam over to her and placed a paw on her shoulder, "Only if they discover who I really am and there's no reason to believe that they will. I'll use a fake name. Everything will be fine."
Aella frowned and glared at him out of the corner of her eye, "You don't know that."
Arion rolled his eyes and chuckled, "Come on, you're worried about me now? After everything?"
Aella's head snapped in his direction and her expression was unreadable but intense. She grabbed his paw on her shoulder with both of hers and squeezed tightly, "You just make sure you come home."
Arion blushed deeply at the memory and decided he would leave this part out of the story Aella was sure to wring out of him when he returned to the monastery. She had wanted to come with him but he wanted to take this journey on his own and now he was glad he had. Aella would be climbing the walls of this cell by now like a crazy dragon if she were here.

Rose, still in the royal bedchambers, was laying on their bed reading a scroll written by her daughter Kalliope in scrawling dragonscript. It had just been delivered at noon and Rose was eager to read how her daughters were settling in at the Academy in the Viridian Labyrinth.
"Babe, listen to this!" Rose piped up happily to the King who was at his desk writing out royal degrees and responses to diplomacy inquiries from various neighboring territories.
After the events of the morning, Dathan had made his wife take it easy the rest of the day. He even arranged for the emissaries from Tritoran to be housed in the north wing of the castle under guard until he was certain Rose was completely recovered. It was a good excuse to make those blood-sucking politicians metaphorically sweat during their "peace treaty" mission.
The line of dark azure eyes lining Dathan's torso were the first to look up and see Rose's smiling face as she read a letter from their eldest daughter. His head emerged from his writings a moment later and he brushed his long mane away from his face so he could look at her with an unobstructed view through his normal eyes. His answering smile as soft and pleasant, "Are they doing well?"
Rose giggled, "Yes! Sort of... apparently they were all asked to sing during one of their classes and Kalinda accidentally used her Luna's Song ability and stunned the entire class."
Dathan chuckled at her response to this, "You're happy about this?"
She glanced at him and made a face, "Yes, Kalliope says she was promoted into the advanced class for magical singers."
"That's wonderful."
Rose beamed at the news and leaped off the bed towards him. Anticipating her reaction, Dathan caught her in a circle of his wings. He was glad to see her so overjoyed and was truly happy for his youngest daughter as well.
"She'll finally be able to learn how to control her ability the way I never did," Her smile was light but soft as she gazed into his eyes.
"You learned to control your powers decently on your own. Enough to save me," He said in reply, his voice was deep.
Rose was about to say something else when that moment on the balcony flashed before eyes again and Dathan's life was in danger. A spasm of what she could have lost that day made her heart skip a beat.
She kissed the edge of his lips and then whispered softly, "I'll always be there to save you." As the mood shifted between them, Dathan gazed passionately back his Queen and returned her kiss.
There was a knock on their door and Dathan's eyes closed in a exasperation. Rose tried to hide her laughter at his annoyed groan of irritation at being interrupted, "The only downside of being a king is that there is always someone who needs you at every hour of the day or night."
Rose chuckled, nuzzled him under the chin and gave him a mischievous look, "Go on, we can always pick up where we left off later."
Dathan's gaze didn't waver as he kissed her roughly and then whispered, "I'm holding you to that."
The knock came again and this time was accompanied by a masculine voice, "Sire, I appolagize for the interu—"
"I'm coming," Dathan snapped at the door as he hastened to redress in his formal attire in case this was something important. 'It better be important," He thought grumpily. Rose ran her fingers through his long, tousled mane so that he didn't look like a sea monster to whoever was at the door.

Dathan opened the door to find Duke Ariston, the Captain of the Guard, standing at attention stoically. The King's stern eyes softened slightly when he saw it was the Duke and not some other orderly. His cousin would only have interrupted Dathan for something pressing.
"What is it Captain?" Dathan asked quickly.
The Duke bowed his head respectfully and then spoke, "Sire, we are requesting her Royal Highness's help with a prisoner in the holding cells."
Dathan frowned immediately while Rose perked her head up from Kalliope's scroll that she had begun to finish reading. This was not what he was expecting. His voice was reproachful, "The Queen needs her rest today."
The Duke was about to reply when Rose hopped up and swam next to her husband so she could answer for herself, "Why do you need my help, Captain?" She placed a reassuring paw on Dathan's shoulder as she sensed his incoming disapproval.
Captain Ariston locked eyes on the Queen and bowed his head once more in respect, "We have apprehended a dragon who came to the palace yesterday seeking an audience with Queen Luminosita."
Rose's eyes widened in shock and she turned to her husband. Dathan's expression was immediately clouded and suspicious. She turned back to the Captain and stated seriously, "You want me to make him tell the truth."
The Duke's formal expression turned slightly apologetic as he nodded, "Yes. We wouldn't normally ask but due to recent events surrounding Luminosita Solari we feel it is of paramount importance to get to the heart of this matter as soon as possible."
Rose held up a paw and said, "Say no more Captain, I—"
"Rose," Dathan interrupted quickly, giving her a look.
She placed a finger against his mouth to keep him from continuing, "Dathan, Luminosita tried to kill you. If there is a dragon who came here seeking to speak with her then they may have important information about other crimes she may have been attempting to commit against you."
Her finger moved so that her paw could caress his face. His stormy eyes didn't leave hers but he remained silent as she added, "Do not ask me rest while your life could still be in danger and I have the power to protect you."
Captain Ariston watched the exchanged without emotion but this was very clearly his motivation for interrupting the King and Queen's alone time. Dathan's eyes closed and he sighed unhappily, "Very well but I am coming with you. I want to see this prisoner for myself."

"Rose," Dathan interrupted quickly, giving her a look.
She placed a finger against his mouth to keep him from continuing, "Dathan, Luminosita tried to
kill you.
