Lost and Found

A dull-coloured Coatl is regarded as a bad omen, to be banished from their clan forever. Most Coatls do not worry, for their plumage is colourful enough to avoid this fate. But for Crystal and Silver, two dragons born in different regions of Sornieth - one in the magical Starfall Isles, pulsating with magical energy within, and one in the murky depths of the Tangled Wood, where light hardly penetrates - this is a judgment they cannot defer.

Shadows converge amidst the enormity of the cosmos, and two fated dragons cross paths for better or for worse. Doomsday is coming, and what harmed them is now the only thing that can save those they care for.

This time, they must pass their own verdict of fate.

Tirtouga insisted i share how i write. we’re doing everything on an extremely laggy google doc, so sometimes i just smash my head onto my laptop (please don’t follow my example) to continue typing... anyway, if you find the concept of this story slightly confusing, i’ll explain it to you. the odd-numbered chapters are written by me, for silver’s pov. as for the even-numbered ones, those are written by Tirtouga, for crystal’s pov. hopefully that cleared some confusion up! btw, the pictorial templates that we used are made by osiem, we have to credit them! if i go on writing this, Tirtouga’s never going to get a chance to write her author’s note. happy reading our haphazardly-written story :) Tirtouga678 Hello! I’m Tirtouga678, you can call me Tirtouga. As Tori mentioned above, this story and its main characters are based on ideas that we came up with a long time ago. While writing this I may or may not have inserted an excessive amount of description inside. Well, that’s what I always do… I think… hey, at least it gives you a better idea of the exact setting and what’s going on and everything, right? Or at least, I hope it does... XD You can probably tell what my writing style is from now, and yeah I kinda did insist on sharing about our writing styles. When I’ve got inspiration it just goes on and on and on and on and… you get the point, so please excuse some of the really long chapters later on ;) YEESH I WROTE SO MUCH Uh, guess I have to end it here, or you’re never going to get to the actual story HAHAHA I’ll have more chances to talk after I upload each of my chapters anyway. Her quick reflexes and astonishing agility, combined with her potent magic and fluid strength, make her a formidable warrior to face. An observant dragon, she is able to quickly pinpoint others’ emotions and mood changes with the accuracy of a Skydancer. She puts up a friendly front, able to keep conversation with a seemingly bubbly exterior, but in reality is deeply vulnerable within. Strangely enough, unlike other members of her species she shies away from seafood, preferring plant matter or meat. If left to her own devices, she tends to withdraw into herself, eyes gaining a strange magenta glow. Chapter One Silver [img]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/hzvonpzcngbad5x/shadowtop2.png[/img] Wisps of light cracked through her eyelids as Silver struggled to wake up. She opened her eyes, blinking away the sleep. Around her was the vague outline of a… decaying tree? Silver sat up with a jerk, unfurling her multi-faceted, cold, grey wings. She had gotten used to them as the days had passed, and she enjoyed every single bit of it. The cold, soothing feel of it when she herself wrapped around it, the cling-clang cacophony from the many featherlike runes on her wings when in movement, and the best part: these feathers were detachable. She could drop them if she wished, revealing pale grey skin, and put them back on again. Silver absorbed the view around her - it was a foreign place - not familiar to her like her wings. What is this place? Slowly, she stood up, pushing herself off her hind legs. It was night time. Her last memory was a faded one of… wait a minute. Where AM I? Something wasn’t right. When she was last awake, she had been in a cozy cave, with the other bright-coloured Coatls feeding her berries. The cool night fog that wrapped around her like a veil was in stark contrast to the welcoming warmth of the cave with the others. Almost everything around her was pitch black, except the strange, eerie blue glow from the glowing mushrooms around her. Silver had never seen such a place before, especially since she had only seen the world for a week. Despite the pungent smell of rot, she wandered through the strange fungi, full of awe and interest. The density of rotting and decaying trees and logs prevented the dim light from the moon from penetrating. Slowly but surely, Silver trudged through the undergrowth which was full of mud and sharp twigs with a growing uncertainty, but cuts never seemed to form at her ankles, her skin protected by her glistening scales. She had no idea where she was going, and she began desperately longing for the warmth and safety of the Coatls’ lair. How did I end up here? She started worrying, groping her way through in the blue light. With every step she took, the soft ‘clink’ of her blade-like feathers clattered, giving her an odd sense of comfort. It seemed like the only form of noise resounding through the dense undergrowth that she was plodding through. With no experience being outside, how would she be able to find her way back? I want to go home. Then she saw a quick shadow dash by in front of her, disappearing into the darkness. Wh...what is that? She panicked, mind a whirl of doubt. She was not alone in this mysterious place. “Hello…?” Silver called out, voice cracking with fear. She slowed down, her short legs eventually coming to a halt. Silver then heard the crushing of dried leaves once again, stirring up dead leaves in its wake. Almost-black leaves scattered across the earthen floor ahead of her. Silver stood in silence, watching, too scared to move. I want to go home. Instincts told her to budge, to run away from the possible danger that threatened her. But at the same time, her legs would not move. She wanted to stay, mind full of curiosity, even though she was pretty much defenseless, with no idea how to find her way back home, let alone fight off danger. In a flash, she heard the ruffling of leaves again - not in front of her - but behind her. Silver spun around instantly, mind in a blur again. Chapter One
Silver
shadowtop2.png

Wisps of light cracked through her eyelids as Silver struggled to wake up.

Anxiety filled her body, stiffening her up, making her unable to move for the second time. What IS this thing? If this thing was going to attack her, she decided that she should attack back too, then find some refuge for the night, before finding her way back in the day time, where the sun may penetrate through the thorny knots of the dead trees providing her light. But now, the priority was to eliminate this leaf-stirring creature. Or monster. Silver dropped to her haunches, wings spread out to provide some sort of shield for her pale grey body. In a flash she saw the creature again. It was a small body darting across the forest floor. Silver sighed in relief, relaxing. Food. It could be food. Not a monster. Breathe, Silver, breathe. However, she suddenly felt something brush past her wings, and confusion begin to spread to her. What? In an instant, she heard the metallic-sounds of her diamond hard feathers dropping to the ground, her wings now bare and exposed to the cold, dark night and its predators. What’s happening? Why-

Without thinking, she mentally willed to bring up the feathers, weakly placing them back onto her pale grey wings. But nothing happened. Her wings still felt bare. Instead, Silver saw her shimmering feathers fly ahead of her, disappearing out of her sight. Then she heard the high-pitched shriek of a creature, so loud that she fell to the ground, shut her eyes in an attempt to block out the blaring scream, and helplessly wrapped herself in her bare wings, head down. “I want to go home.” she breathed.

That wasn’t normal… wait… she forced her eyes open and a stray ember hissed right on her snout. Startled, she flinched back, wings snapping open, but the sting of flames on her feathers forced her to fold her pinions back. What was going on? Now wide awake, she looked around to see fire arcing all around her in some sort of strange cage. I… what? A panicked cry tore itself from her throat and drew the attention of the brighter-coloured Coatls nearby. Upon seeing she was awake they instantly shied even further away, casting wary glances at the stark white Coatl. The sparkle of iridescent facets in her scales and feathers was not enough to protect her against the prejudice of the Coatls. Being an entirely white Coatl, Crystal had been shunned since birth - and it seemed the clan had finally turned against her. Truthfully, she was surprised they even allowed her to stay as she grew. But there was no choice for her anymore. Focusing, Crystal imagined the gentle lap of waves on the shore, as she siphoned Water magic from the surroundings. More… just a little more… The young Coatl lashed out at the fire cage with a strong tidal wave, the water surging outwards, extinguishing the luminous flame, before curling back in and dissipating in a shower of droplets. She stumbled backwards as she saw the other Coatls starting to congregate, a solid front of bright scales and feathers. She couldn’t help but compare their hues and shades to her own glittering white. Surely her colours were beautiful in their own right? Her thoughts were cut off as a flurry of leaves hurtled towards her, fluttering uselessly off her crystalline scales, but they were only a distraction for the line of jagged rocks that erupted from the ground and slammed her into the air, where she narrowly spun out of the way of a bolt of twisting wind. She nearly coughed up blood. They were too strong! She had to run, or they would kill her. Crystal turned tail and fled, running as fast as she could. As she ran and ran, bolts of elemental energy rained down in her general direction, and being a young and inexperienced dragon, she could only avoid that many. Faster… I’ve got to be faster… The Coatl twisted and turned, ducking under overhanging vines and leaping over fallen logs. Her lungs felt like they were about to burst and her legs ached so much and the world was already blurring before her eyes and she couldn’t go any faster- She tumbled under a tangle of roots. Stunned by the jarring impact, Crystal couldn’t even make a single sound. The warriors stopped when they could no longer see her white scales, and the clan leader landed with a thump. “We’ve chased her far enough. She won’t be coming back anytime soon.” The fading crunch of leaves under the Coatls’ paws seemed like a faint echo to the exhausted dragon’s ears. White still edged her vision. And then silence. Slowly, Silver opened her eyes, unwrapping herself from her still-bare wings. The moisture of the forest clung to her exposed skin, making her shiver. However, yet again, she heard the rustling of leaves. Silver froze, before she plopped down onto the forest floor, tired. Half of her knew it was an animal, since she saw a glimpse of its small frame dash past her. That half told her to rest, to sleep and to prepare for the following day’s event - finding her way back home. The other half was telling her to get up and move, hunt this animal down, or to go home, somehow. She ignored the latter. Silver sat down, finding herself leaning onto a rotting log, which had the bioluminescent mushrooms growing on it. She glanced at it, wondering where on this planet could her metal-like feathers had gone to. Gone. It’s gone for good. Sighing, she lay down, preparing for sleep. As she drifted into a light sleep, she visualised a little monkey with black wings and a curly tail trotting toward her, with her wing feathers sticking onto the furry pelt of the monkey. The monkey did not show a sign of it in pain or discomfort, despite being poked by her blade-like feathers. It seemed to come closer and closer to her, until it was only a paw’s length away from her reach. Then it sat down, beady eyes wide, its gaze never leaving her. Silver stared back at the monkey in her semi-sleep, wondering why she was dreaming about a monkey. That was when she realised she was actually seeing it in real life, not her imagination. Silver jumped out of her daze, scaring the monkey, but it still sat there, watching. “M..my feathers,” she muttered, pulling them out of the monkey with her magic and placing them back on her wings. Silver exhaled in relief, now knowing she’d found her wing parts. The wounds where her blade-like feathers had pierced it immediately healed, sewing themselves back into the monkey’s blue-black pelt. Silver stared in shock. “Can you speak? What are you?” she asked, sitting up from her sleeping position. With a sly grin, the little monkey sat up, extending a four-fingered paw toward her. In a hoarse, slow voice, the winged monkey said, “You look very lost. And it wasn’t very kind of you to throw all these…” it pointed to her wings, then continued, “Blades.” Silver tilted her head, confused. “But I didn’t - I didn’t harm you on purpose. My feathers-” “Blades,” the monkey corrected. “My...blades just flew off me. I didn’t control them,” Silver replied, still in the dark about what the monkey was saying. “Maybe when you weren’t turning around looking like a panicked cat trying to chase its tail, you’d get it. When I was minding my own business catching insects for supper, you dropped your blades on the ground and hurled them at me,” the monkey sulked, now feeling sour about how Silver did not shake its paw. She realised this and smiled, extending a muddy arm and shook the little monkey’s paw. “Well, sorry about that. I’m Silver, and yes...I am a bit lost,” she said, glad that she may have found an avenue to find her way back home. The monkey shook her paw, before darting to the left of Silver’s side and coming back with a glossy black beetle in its mouth. She watched the winged-monkey eat the beetle with slight disgust, while the monkey ate its supper in oblivion to Silver’s thoughts. How can anyone like eating insects? She wondered. Then she remembered the scream. “By the way...did you hear a scream just now? A high-pitched one. It was...very scary,” she asked. Mid-bite, the monkey began to laugh a shrill laugh, before replying, “That was me, silly Silver. I’m a Manticore Screamer. I scream when I’m injured to get my family or friends to help me out. So yes, when your projectile blades harmed me, my family came rushing. But I waved them off, knowing it was just you, an inexperienced Coatl,” Silver winced at the name ‘silly Silver’, but now more or less understanding the events that had happened before. All the events but how she’d got here. “I...I thought you were a monkey!” she laughed. “But...I need to find my way back home. I’m from a Coatl clan. I don’t know where it is, or how I got here. Maybe...maybe you could help me?” she told the Manticore Screamer. Upon hearing her words, the Manticore Screamer studied her for a moment, before its face darkened. It finished the rest of the beetle then said, “They kicked you out, Silver. The Coatls didn’t want you, so they abandoned you here.” Silver’s heart dropped.
