Alright I'm sorry to say but I have to throw in the towel completely on this thread. A lot of my motivation got shot a while back and I've slowly become too busy to run it.

That being said please reach out to me here via private message or ping me in a forum if you want! You can also reach out to me on Discord, Viscere #4444. (If that no longer works for some reason just PM me and I'll send you my tag.)

This thread will remain up and unedited from this point on, I do encourage people to read and share it around. There's a lot of information in here.

Sorry I couldn't keep this going. Please don't reply to the thread anymore, as I'm officially unsubscribing and won't be responding to any more replies here. Sorry to everyone who I left hanging, I hope you can forgive me. ^^;

Hey, I've been toying with the idea of opening a shop for art as well as my map shop. It takes me forever to do pieces because I work overnights at an emergency room but here's the first piece I've managed to complete. I'd love to know what you think it would be priced at/around. My line-art is terrible so I would likely only offer colored pieces.

Sorry for the delay just woke up! Also thank you for your hard work. That's not an easy job

The detail in that is really pretty! Since it is a dual fullbody piece with full shading, color, and a full background I'd say minimum you should be charging is around 600kt. Your linework isn't bad at all, and you've got a pretty good grasp on the basic anatomy.

My advice would be that if you're super busy, don't offer larger pieces. Maybe just simple single character headshots or flat colored pieces. Commissions can be very stressful so you don't want to overwhelm yourself. You can probably start your headshots around 75kt depending on the level of detail you put into them/genes/eyetype ect. The rule of thumb I give people is if it doesn't feel worth it for what you're being paid, charge more.

What I'd definitely start practicing is shading/shadow practice. Getting a good solid range of value in your shading, hard light vs soft light, and how to use different layer types can shoot the quality of your work up in no time at all. Also perspective! If you prefer doing larger pieces like this perspective is gonna really help you out in the long run!

'Ello, you've probably already seen some of my art around Discord but would you provide some opinions on my (super wip) pricing? I know the painting style is probably underpriced but I don't know what to do about it, plus I only have one example rn >->

@Drymm squints at your prices CHARGE MORE Okay in all seriousness you're not super undercharging but you definitely deserve to charge more for that level of work. I'll go down the list here. For your lined examples there the level of detail and anatomy understanding warrants a price upgrade regardless. You've got a good starting depth in understanding pose language, your expressions are good, the detail in patterns like your genes are fantastic. The bust base price needs to go up to at least 375g. Halfbody can easily be bumped up to 450-485g. Fullbody you can go into the high 600g range, maybe even low 700s. I'd bump your background prices a bit, but that's just me. Maybe by about 75g each. Next your lineless, flat out increase across the board by at least 100g each. Quite frankly that fullbody to me is worth at least 1k. bonk bonk bonk Value yo work. These examples have an extremely good understanding of anatomy, cloth physics, effects like that lightning. To give some hard starting numbers; Bust should be at least 575g no if ands or buts. Halfbody should be at least 800g, fullbody you should be charging at least 1kg for in my opinion. Painted, probably the one I feel you're rocking the best price-wise on but you're still undercharging a bit. Harder for me to judge this once since the example doesn't have facial features so I'm going to be combining what I gather from the painted example and your lineless examples. The prices are roughly around where I'd say you should be charging. You can probably bump them up a bit if you feel the price isn't worth the work. In this case what I would also charge for is complexity of a character. A simple character is easy enough to paint, complex ones with tons of parts and textures are going to take you longer. If flat prices don't feel right, charge per hour. Quick improvement tips here we go; Your style is super light and pretty across the board but play with some darker shadows. Don't be afraid to dip into darker and brighter value ranges. Using the greyscale trick on a piece, especially paintings, can show you how similar a lot of the colors look. You've got great grasp of anatomy and shading, so next I would work on rendering as well. This can help you out a ton with your value practice. You'll be forced to look at the true range of colors something as simple as a brick wall can have.

Hmm... Usually I don't say lower prices but in this case I am leaning hard into that field. You've got a great eye for detail and color, but your anatomy and shading are falling a little flat. For this I'm gonna go example by example for the feedback.

First one, the coatl itself is very cute. I like the expression and your eye stylization is beautiful. I can tell you draw eyes a lot from that image. The feathers have a nice shape and blend nicely into the neck. Overall this piece I might charge at most $7 for, just because the anatomy flaws show through. The tongue is very small and doesn't look overly natural and there are some issues with the shape of the snout. Coatls have very snake-like heads, so I always recommend looking up references of snakes to get an understanding for how the anatomy should look. Along with that, the definition on the glimmer is rough. I know the primary is jaguar, but the belly just barely has any sparkle. That's definitely something to accentuate. The background is pretty but the colors are slightly distracting, and draw your eye toward them instead of the dragon. Especially that green. There are some really nice youtube videos with crash-courses on color theory just to dip your toes in.

The second example shows some nice detail in those gem genes. Bee and opal are shaded really nice and again I can see the level of detail in those eyes. The body isn't too bad and the arms and feet look pretty natural. Again there are a few anatomy issues, mostly in the face. The ears should be pushed to the side a bit more, think looking at an animal like a cow. Those sit right on the side of the head and fan out. Your head structure is a bit too humanoid in shape, faes are just... Triangles? That's honestly the best word I can use to describe them. Front-on views are really tricky so I recommend practicing a bit with side views to understand the shape a bit more. The multigaze I honestly didn't notice until I took a closer look. it is definitely too forward-facing, but I do know that they're eyes. Remember multigaze goes down the side of the dragon, so it wouldn't curve into their belly. For this one I'd probably charge around $10 to $12, including upcharges for gem genes and special eyetypes.

Alright the snapper now. I really don't like telling people to pull back but $45 is definitely a bit high imo. For that piece I'd go up to $25 at most. Your level of detail is still very nice and the colors are vibrant, but the anatomy details persist. Right off the bat the front leg is very thin. Snappers are chonky kids and they've got tree-trunk legs. Make it too thick instead of too thin. Big cylinders and spheres will help you out a lot there. The back pink wing should be showing more than it is. Even if the front is hidden by the head, you should still see more feathers in the gap between the head and the tail. The tail is also confusing to me. I think the snapper has tail feathers but it looks more like a strange extension of the wing. Your facial anatomy is good and the way you shaded the jewelry is really pretty.

Overall, yes I'd definitely say you need to scale your prices back a smidge. Your details are very beautiful but your anatomy is holding you back here. You're also a victim of the bright saturated colors. Punch some dark colors in there, I promise it makes a difference. If you're struggling with the anatomy of a dragon, go to the encyclopedia and copy the example image pasted in the breed page. Use those to find the shapes in the breed. Understand the joints and the anatomy. It helps a lot. Get a sketchbook page or a blank canvas and just slam out a ton of practice sketches. Look at how other people draw them, ask for recommendations on what animals to reference. Real life is always your best teacher, as that's what humans always base off of. Like I said, Coatls are snakes, and slightly cat-like. Practice both then smash 'em together until you find a variant that you enjoy! You've got some great start here, just keep hammering out the anatomy practice and you'll get there.

Oh wow you’re spot on that I am unfamiliar with the anatomy of the dragons here! (Or any dragon really) I try to reference from real life but I definitely need more practice like you said. The pushing of colors and details is also spot on, that’s one of the things I’m fighting to improve as I know my shadows especially can be a little lacking. You’ve given me some pretty great advice I really appreciate it.

I got my prices from a friend of mine(they are obviously a little biased) so I love the second opinion! You’re amazing for taking the time out of your day to provide such amazing and extensive feedback!

Recently opened an art shop (like, two nights ago), so I'm not expecting any traction yet, but I'd love to get a second opinion on pricing! I feel like that's a bit high for my skill level, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
