Origins
Many years ago, an ancient clan lived in Wispwillow Grove.
From this clan, there was a young Skydancer, mischievous and adventurous. A faerie found her playing on the outskirts of her lair and, charming her with flattery and gifts, lured her deeper into the grove. Not watching her step, the Skydancer followed the faerie into a ring of glowshrooms - and thus, into the otherworldly realm of faeries.
As the sun reached its zenith, she asked the faerie to take her home. The faerie gasped, and told her of all the sights they had yet to explore, from where the mushrooms blinked in sync with heartbeats to where shadows sang echoes. And so the Skydancer agreed to stay a little longer.
As the sun made its descent, she asked again. The faerie promised, but then presented her with a feast of berries and honeybees that tasted like moonlight, so the Skydancer agreed to stay a little longer.
As the sun hid its face beyond the horizon, she asked again, this time insisting. After some consideration, the faerie agreed, but warned the young dragon that things may not be as she had left it.
You see, time passes differently in the realm of faeries. What had felt like a day to the Skydancer had been hundreds of years on Sornieth. When she returned to her clan, she found them sick and dying. Many had fallen already, the leaders included, and now that was left of the clan were a handful of dragons struggling to support themselves, too weak to seek help elsewhere, to even address her as she passed by.
The Skydancer fled.
She fled, back to the faerie, begging the being for help. The faerie agreed, but it would not be easy - she would need to bring the faerie three things to save her clan.
The first was an object blessed by the Shadowbinder, and so the Skydancer searched for a tree bearing Shimmering Pinecones. There she waited, three Sornieth days and three Sornieth nights, leaving offerings until finally a single pinecone fell, undamaged even after its fall. She brought it back to the faerie, who took it with an approving smile.
The second was something that represented momentous change. The Skydancer pondered this riddle for three Sornieth days and three Sornieth nights until finally, on the last night, she witnessed a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. She caught it carefully, her clear jar glinting under the moonlight. She brought it back to the faerie, who took it with a thoughtful smile.
The third - the third would be binding, the faerie warned. "What is your name, young one, and are you willing to give it up?" The Skydancer responded with a resounding yes, then paused, because what had her name been? After all the magical sights and sounds and smells and tastes of the faerie realm, she had forgotten it.
She returned to her clan's lair to search for a hint, but the living dragons could not answer her. She scoured the area, and finally found the clan's memorial stone, many names freshly carved. She ran her claws over them, then moved to the more weathered names. And there, she found it, she was -
The faerie touched her shoulder, and she turned to face it. "Take this," the faerie said, and offered her a staff of fine but twisting wood. Ornate, butterfly-like etchings marked its surface, and a Shimmering Pinecone topped it. "Touch it to each of your clanmates and it will save them. It will change them forever, but it will save them."
She took it carefully, and she felt the faerie's magic wash over her. In an instant, beautiful designs spread across her body, and her belly glowed with her own magic, blooming in response to the transformation. She looked up at the faerie, who offered her a sad smile. "They will not remember their past selves, but you will. The only thing you cannot keep is your name - that is the price of this gift. You will be known as Wispsong, and now their fate lies with you."
The reborn, renamed Skydancer nodded, and with trembling claws she touched the staff to her clanmates, and they too were transformed. As they rose to their feet and stretched their wings, they looked to her and her staff.
She drew herself tall and, hiding her fear for this new beginning, led them deeper into Wispwillow Grove.
And thus the Shimmering Court came to be.
