No one is sure where it hails from or how it started, but it originated somewhere in the plaguelands and they seem to have it the worst. We are calling it: The Nosos Effect. [sub]1 The Nosos Effect Aeschylus, Agamemnon 1001 ff (trans. Weir Smyth) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) : "Truly blooming health (hygeia) does not rest content within its due bounds; for disease (nosos) ever presses close against it, its neighbor with a common wall. So human fortune, when holding onward in straight course strikes upon a hidden reef. [N.B. Hygeia and Nosos are scarcely personified in this passage.][/sub] It is well known to many that when a coatl becomes sick it’s colors fade, and those born with these sickly colors are viewed negatively. The Nosos virus also seems to be strictly hereditary in every flight, except for the plague flight, where it is indeed contagious and only affects coatls. A healthy coatl in plague can contract the disease and fade because of the illness(see Blooming Coatls) and pass it on to offspring and others. Each coatl is affected differently by this virus and the severity of symptoms vary. Plague coatls are also the only dragons who have the full-blown Nosos virus. Also known as: "The Afflicted”. Those born with it in other flights are carriers of the disease, and any offspring they have will be carriers as well. Carriers can’t pass on the virus in any way besides breeding. A Carrier can produce Afllicted offspring by nesting in plague. Omens are hatchlings born with sickly colors, like Carriers, but are not born with the Nosos virus in them. Omens can contract the virus in any flight at any time, Omens are the only known cases of coatls that can contract the virus outside of the plague flight. Usually omens are a signal to coatls in a flight, outside of plague, that the disease is coming or is already in the lair. Signaling to other coatls that they need to be careful or leave. Some omens are chased out of their lair in fear for the health of otherwise normal coatls that inhabit the same lair. [*]Loss of Plumage: A infected coatl may lose some or all of it’s feathers if it’s sickness worsen. Few have lost all their plumage. A stressed dragon or mentally ill may pluck their feathers. [*]Still birth [*]Weak Immune System: Easily susceptible to other diseases. Increased risk for mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, epilepsy etc. ( behavioral disorders can be associated with or without a mental illness). [*]Increased risk for other respiratory infections and other illnesses. [*]blindness/ deafness [*]Mute/mixing up words of speaking gibberish: A rarer symptom than most. (NYCTOPHOBIA(FEAR OF DARKNESS) also HELIOPHOBIA(FEAR OF SUNLIGHT) and PHOTOSENSITIVITY) [*][b]Plague:[/b] The plague flight is susceptible to everything the virus has to offer. Plague coatls are often much lighter or darker, XXX and XXY pale white or dark coatls are much more common because plague dragons are easily infected with the virus. Plague dragons are also prone to anemia and high/low bloodpressure. (GINGIVITIS, EXCESSIVE MUCUS BUILD UP, B.O) [*][b]Wind: [/b]Deafness. Respiratory illness is usually limited to asthma is infected wind coatls. The reason for this being the wind doman has pristine air and a constant gusts of wind that help respiratory problematic dragon to breathe better. (EXCESSIVE FLATULENCE, (\[we’re such children xD] Italian accents) [*][b]Water:[/b] mute, respiratory issues,, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, depression. This is because we are not minors and it’s not up to us to expose young minds to certain sensitive information.[/color][sub] [center][b][size=6][b] M I X - B R E E D - P A R E N T A G E [/b][/center] The Nosos virus is only hereditary and contagious (in the plague flight) to other coatls all other species are safe. If a wildclaw and an afflicted coatl had offspring all the coatl offspring would be carriers, omens, or afflicted (if plague). Maybe if a coatl and another dragon breed have children , there's more of a chance the coatl offspring would be Omens. Afflicted coatls in general have a difficult time finding a significant other, because it’s hard to find a lover who’s okay with their children being born ill. [center][b][size=6][b] B R E E D - C H A N G E [/b][/center] A coatl that undergoes a breed change would still have the same genetics and would still be the same dragon, and thus would still have the Nosos virus. The virus only affects Coatls so it would be harmless to any other dragon breed. However, any coatl offspring of that Afflicted coatl would still suffer from the virus(as long as they met the requirements.) Same with if that breed changed coatl went to the plague flight, it could still spread the virus to other coatls. This would be a very very rare occurrence and may result in more heinous dragons, disguising themselves in order to ruin the lives of others, or to get back at someone; or maybe a coatl that just thought it could get away from the disease. [center][b][size=6]V I R U L E N T - A F F L I C T E D[/b][/center] Virulent coatls are usually older coatls or younger coatls who’s Nosos virus has become so great in severity that the dragon is on the verge of death. These coatl’s symptoms have become too much to bear and the dragon becomes unable to proceed with normal life. These coatls often suffer in immense pain both physically and mentally and some Virulent seek ways to end their suffering. Virulent coatls are especially susceptible to becoming a bloomer as their affliction works fast and hard. [center][b][size=6]B L O O M I N G - A F F L I C T E D[/b][/center] Blooming afflicted only occur in the plague fight. This coloration is usually seen in coatls who were perfectly healthy before contracting the Nosos virus. Like other afflicted their body tried to fight the virus, but ended up being able to keep some of their color. They show the same symptoms and suffer in the same way. The way the color drains from the dragon's body leaving white patches is what gave the “Blooming Effect” it’s name. The virus is blooming in them. Bloomers are often turned away from their lairs, afraid they may spread the disease to other healthy coatls in their lair. [b]Paint/Piebald[/b] Mostly bleached of their former colors and usually seen in more active or in later stages of affliction. Now appearing blotchy and usually immediately turned away from lairs as their condition is quite noticeable. [b]Python/Morph[/b] Bloomers who look like this often have a harder time acknowledging their color changing as a sign of illness as they still retain a fair amount of their former coloration. However, the drastic change of pigmentation should not be looked over. It's usually seen during early phases of affliction, but one’s colors might stay this way.(edited) Some coatls are genuinely unhappy with this as their formerly bright colors have bled and now appear blotchy and unhealthy. Though usually more accepted over their almost entirely bleached alternatives.(edited) Some bloomers, although rare, have been reported having some of their colors return slightly after being completely bleached out, resulting in this patterning. Whether it is a sign of possible recovery, we do not know. Rune a snow white coatl and Rioka, a plagueling WC with only mystery to describe him- but Rioka, however incriminating being plagueborn is, was not the one who their eyes turned to when Nosoi gently peeled back the walls of her egg. For her eyes, which were the only thing visible at the moment, seemed to shine with an ominous light and instead of cooing like most hatchlings, she was eerily quiet. Rune stood stoic next to her mate as Nosoi and her clutch-mates made their way from their eggs and to their parents. The whispers had already started and Rune felt her useless wings twitch with agitation. She ignored them, the doctors did and continue to do what they can about the parasites, the infections, the pain. No use in wasting her energy on gossip and hearsay. Most of Nosoi's coatl siblings died, or are in eternal slumber. One of the only coatl children that lived- was riddled with illness. At first it was not so bad but some of their clanmates shunned her, she was pale- paler than a coatl should be and her eyes, as she grew her pupils elongated and resembled a goat's. Nosoi fell into a great and terrible depression, her first instinct was to hide away, but in time she became angry and indignant and would lash out at anyone who came her way. At night she would leave scars upon herself- she knew it was wrong to attack others. Even if some of them we're rude and callous- and a bit of the other hatchlings bullied out of fear. The turmoils of her life became constant as she grew, she felt she needed to leave. Something in her gut, like a string, pulled at her- told her to find it's source. She wouldn't find happiness here anyway. She bid her parents and anyone who had shown her kindness, goodbye. Finally on her own, she followed that tugging. She wandered across many lands, she visited with other clans and explored their territories. She found long lost ruins and stumbled upon secrets best left as such- secrets. In time, she began to feel like the invisible string was pulling her to someone, someone of her own kind, she just knew it. Nosoi now was frantic in her search, she never stayed in one place long. By now, she knew she was sick, she didn't want it to befall anyone else. Something told her it was contagious- anything from plague [i]had[/i] to be contagious! One day she didn't feel the soft tug above her naval. It had become her lifeline. She was filled with dread, a cold sweat broke across her brow. The pale coatl pushed onward, she was in a meadow near The Focal Point but not quite there yet, still in the Starwood Strand. It was beautiful yet strange here at this time of night. It was quiet and had a strange [i]hum[/i] in the air- "magic," she thought. Magic was not the only thing present in the Strand that night, Nosoi soon found out that Fate, has her own plans. Disconcerted with the loss of direction, Nosoi slowed her pace. She was very wary, could this be where the thread wanted her to go? Why? How many times had she gazed at the sky, wondering if who was on the other side or her journey was wondering the same thing? Sleep did not find her that night and it wasn't until early morning, even before the sun woke, that she heard soft footfalls. Nosoi was strangely numb, she had been in this moment before- sure that the person taking shape out of the darkness would be yet another traveller, monk, or mercenary.
