INTRODUCTION
Nobody’s entirely sure what it is or where it came from. Theories vary, but most tales generally hold that the hivemind is old, very old - perhaps even older than dragonkind itself. It is a deadly, soul-sucking phenomenon that can steal away the very minds and bodies of dragons, reducing them into nothing more than drones, who work only to further the plans of their consciousness.

It behaves almost like a hive of insects. Most individuals are drones; dragonlike creatures with black chitin in place of scales, who move as though possessed. Drones are not sentient, they are not sapient, and they can barely be considered alive. They are disposable workers, who serve under the control of a rogue consciousness that treats them less like living beings and more like extensions of its own body. A consciousness is the brain, and its drones are the muscle, the sinew, the churning innards.

The presence of a consciousness is critical in supporting a hive. Drones are hollow-minded beings without any autonomy or individuality, and most are not programmed with a survival failsafe to remind them to eat and drink if the consciousness commanding them is disconnected. Though they come in many different shapes and sizes depending on what they were in their previous life, drones are rarely prone to doing anything other than what they are told, and those who break the mold are often considered defective and subsequently terminated.

Consciousnesses are sentient in the most alien of senses - they can use logic and reason, but think more like computers than flesh-and-blood beings, seeking only to survive and thrive in the most efficient way possible. They tend to work alone. They are capable of communicating to their drones and to other consciousnesses along wavelengths, psychic signals similar to radio signals that permeate the globe.

The threat of hives comes from the way they grow. Though drones can create more of themselves naturally by laying eggs, this process takes time, and is only advantageous for its production of pureborn drones. Instead, a much quicker process is that of assimilation. In assimilation, a dragon is forcefully transformed into a drone via a concoction called assimilation fluid that only the hive has been known to produce. Assimilation completely strips a dragon of their appearance, autonomy, and memories, leaving them an unrecognizable husk.

Hives do not care for the wellbeing of dragonkind, and view it as a race of farm animals at best. To them, dragons are only a means to an end, more fodder for their ever-growing forms. They steal dragons away from their homes to be assimilated or worse, they exploit everything they come across for the sake of their own benefit, and they destroy any who would pose a threat to them. The hivemind is clever, and it will not stop unless it is beaten back with force. If left unchallenged, it will swallow the whole of Sorneith.

Do not let it win. Do not give in. Do not assimilate.

And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

These drones have developed a tertiary gene, which entails one of several things depending on the type of mutation. It may be a useful ability, a harmless pattern, or a dangerous curse - it is, of course, highly dependent on the specifics of the situation.
> TERTIARY GENE IDEAS <
A list of possible effects of certain tertiary genes, as well as a few drone varieties invented by fellow hives that only require a changed tertiary.
Note that this is suggestion, not hard rule, and you are permitted to come up with whatever explanation for a tertiary that you'd like.

An extreme variation of the genetic norm, suffering an ailment identical to albinism. They never last long in a normal hive, as their bright white coloring makes them obvious targets. Many defective drones are also hatched without a connection to the hivemind, which makes them especially deadly, as they do not require that connection to stay alive. However, they are not hatched with their own individuality, and thus often live confused, broken lives.

Some people, often of darker intent, have attempted to replicate hives for their own purposes. The imperfect results of their experiments are psuedo-drones - creatures that are similar to true hives in brain, but lack the pure genetics of the body. Their minds are often close enough to a true drone's that they can be connected to real hives.

Must be child of a drone

Thanks in part to a number of horrific methods, it is possible for a drone to reproduce with normal dragons. Their offspring are widely varied, and may have any amount of a connection to the hivemind - ranging from completely connected to not at all - and many or none of the features of their drone parent. They all have free will, like dragons, as well as a personality. After the second generation, hive genes become entirely non-dominant, meaning that hive lineage only counts for the drone's direct descendants.

A hive, when left to its own devices, may develop odd coloration. Some of them are of a variety known as Sentinels (created by V0iCEB0X), which are colored to blend in with their environment, and can stay statue-still for days at a time on the edges of a hive's territory, acting as scouts.

Obsidian / Wasp
Obsidian / Bee
Any / Ghost, Smirch, or Circuit

Hijackers are false consciousnesses created to obey orders and snare drones. They are hunted down aggressively by consciousnesses, as they can steal a hive's drones and repurpose them for their master's intentions. The manufacturing quality of a hijacker and how many drones it can control are not determined by any of its physical traits, but it's safe to presume that one with primal or faceted eyes is a force to be reckoned with.

Like psuedo-drones, hijackers can go awry in the creation process. False hijackers, as these failed creatures are called, are often the result of a botched attempt at making a real hijacker. They can possess many or none of the capabilities of a true hijacker, and often act erratically due to conflicting code and misplaced loyalties.

Bizarre, god-created drones (as first discovered by V0iCEB0X). As the hivemind grew larger, even the gods learned of it, and many reacted accordingly. The results of assimilating a Gladebeast (made by Anukfilli). These behemoth drones resemble disgustingly powerful Wildclaws, and are far larger and more dangerous than their forest-dwelling cousins. A Gladebeast is a difficult target for any hive to assimilate, but if one manages to acquire and assimilate one... gods help you.

These traits are typically retained post-assimilation, making them excellent candidates for guard-type drones. The nomadic nature of Bloodbirds means that only a lucky and opportunistic consciousness will have the chance to assimilate one, unless it goes out of its way to collect a specimen.

An assimilated Emberoid. These robotic warriors cannot be assimilated naturally; rather, their minds are forcefully overridden, with a consciousness filling the role of their magician. The red-hot chemical weapon stored in their bellies has been replaced with boiling assimilation fluid. An Emberoid is a deadly foe on the battlefield - while they may be difficult to capture and control, many hives would be tempted by the opportunity to add one to their ranks.

EYES
The ripples through Sorneith's magic have not left the drones untouched. Some of them have begun to develop strangely-formed eyes...
dragon?age=0&body=10&bodygene=20&breed=7&element=6&eyetype=3&gender=0&tert=147&tertgene=0&winggene=20&wings=10&auth=63e6cd135fabe1d171df49a5d9b1018c1ce973d2&dummyext=prev.png COMMON TO RARE
The most standard eyes, and quite ordinary to boot. They will not earn a second glance from either drone or consciousness. These drones are not at risk and possess no special properties. NOTE: This category also includes Bright and Pastel.
dragon?age=0&body=10&bodygene=20&breed=7&element=6&eyetype=11&gender=0&tert=32&tertgene=0&winggene=20&wings=10&auth=9762622f2368fa05e842306940437f0dddc3d419&dummyext=prev.png INNOCENT
Though this eye type is mostly benign, drones with enlarged eyes may be better able to see in the dark than their peers. Alternatively, the rounded, watery, draconic-looking eyes may make them appear more innocent or unassuming than other drones, making them more suitable for interacting - either cooperatively or competitively - with dragons.
dragon?age=0&body=10&bodygene=20&breed=7&element=6&eyetype=4&gender=0&tert=147&tertgene=0&winggene=20&wings=10&auth=1d4141c02606574b035b3a3aabd5b808e429ae56&dummyext=prev.png FACETED
These eyes are considered ideal. Some claim that these drones are the purest of their kind, converted back to their roots and freed of their dragonlike inhibitions. Drones with faceted eyes often have a stronger connection to the consciousness, and if they are a consciousness themselves, they tend to have heightened awareness and intelligence.
dragon?age=0&body=10&bodygene=20&breed=7&element=6&eyetype=5&gender=0&tert=147&tertgene=0&winggene=20&wings=10&auth=31724b55b5442e8dcc984029fd808b840954eb25&dummyext=prev.png MULTI-GAZE
These eyes are considered a bizarre mutation by most consciousnesses, an infringement somewhat akin to a tertiary gene. If the drone can see out of its eyes, the consciousness may assign them to guard duty or some other job wherein extra eyes are useful. If the eyes are benign, the drone is often killed or chased off, for fear that something else may be watching out of them...
dragon?age=0&body=10&bodygene=20&breed=7&element=6&eyetype=6&gender=0&tert=147&tertgene=0&winggene=20&wings=10&auth=25da238de18644d3cf860d76c85d5ebf75b4caf1&dummyext=prev.png PRIMAL

AFFILIATES
Want to affiliate with the hivemind and create some cross-subspecies lore? Just ping me and ask!

AMALGAMATES
> DESIGNATION: HIGHLY DANGEROUS
> AVOID AT ALL COSTS
One of the few natural predators of drones. While not evolved for this purpose, they do the job quite well - by swallowing them whole, that is. Amalgamates are haunted by the minds of all the sapient creatures that they eat, meaning that drones are a perfect snack: they have a nutritious, dragonlike body and no pesky conscious hitchhikers. The connection runs deeper if an amalgamate gets a hold of a consciousness, whose mental broadcasts can be tweaked to lure in even more drones.

GLADEBEASTS
> DESIGNATION: MODERATELY DANGEROUS
> LARGE DRONES RECOMMENDED FOR EASE OF ASSIMILATION
The gigantic, feathery cousins of Wildclaws, Gladebeasts were created in response to the growing Emperor threat. Bigger, bulkier, and stronger than Wildclaws, they have a unique skull shape and a terrifying pension to destroy all who intrude upon their territory. They can grow to rival Guardians in size. This doesn't deter hives, though - no Gladebeast drones have been reported yet, but their usefulness may paint a target on their backs for prospecting hives...

GOETIA-BORN
> DESIGNATION: MODERATELY DANGEROUS, CANNOT BE ASSIMILATED
> INVEST IN GUARDS IF FOUND NEARBY
The Goetia-born are a strange race - dragons in form, but not in physiology, they come from a world other than Sorneith, made by a god who calls themselves an arbiter of justice. Goetia-born cannot be assimilated, and assimilation fluid only serves to make them ill. Although not originally a problem for the hivemind, a recent investment in their development by their deity has led to some individuals developing faceted, insect-like eyes and the ability to create small 'dead zones' where a consciousness's signal cannot transmit. These individuals are sent to the surface to wipe it clean of the hive's influence. Naturally, the hive despises these creatures, and will do whatever it can to ensure that they are annihilated.

PLUSHIES
> DESIGNATION: AVERAGE, CANNOT BE ASSIMILATED
> IGNORE UNLESS PROBLEMATIC
Beings of cotton and wool, dead matter given life. These creatures are not made of organic flesh, but are cursed to walk the world of the living anyway, even as their seams tear and their fabric whittles away. Their sentient nature gives them the ability to prove a problem to hives, but as non-organic matter, they possess no value - caloric or otherwise - to drones and are thusly ignored.

SICKLY
> DESIGNATION: ASSIMILATE POORLY AND BEHAVE AS CONTAGION VECTORS TO HEALTHY TARGETS
> IGNORE UNLESS PROBLEMATIC
A sect of unlucky souls who were infected by exáplosi asthéneias, otherwise known as the shedding sickness. Symptoms include peeling skin, scabs, rapid weight loss, and the growth of sac-like structures filled with gastric acid, blood, and saliva, all of which carry the disease. Their poor immune systems make assimilation easy, but result in drones with similarly deplorable ills. The disease gives them some perks, such as super-strength and an affinity to dark magic, though these boons sadly do not carry over through the assimilation process and thus make them unfit to assimilate. The lack of meat on their bones makes them unworthy to even serve as a food source, and so they are, for the most part, left alone.

CRYOBORGS
> DESIGNATION: AVERAGE, HIGHER RISK OF POOR ASSIMILATION
> FUNCTIONAL BUT NOT IDEAL
A combination of cryonics, cybernetics, and magic gone wrong, cryoborgs are the preserved-turned-living dragons who attempted to freeze their bodies to stave off illness or death until a time came where science could cure their ailments. The magic that awakened them fused them with their frosty enclosures and the metal meant to protect them, turning them into half-flesh, half-metal things with a thin layer of permafrost coating their hide. Depending on how much of their bodies is organic, it is possible for them to be assimilated, but their weakness to heat and clunky metal parts may remain.

BILESNEAKS
> DESIGNATION: AVERAGE, BEHAVE AS CONTAGION VECTORS TO HEALTHY TARGETS
> POTENTIALLY THREATENING
The Bogsneak mutagen took a terrible turn when a Plague clan attempted to develop it into a fast-spreading virus. Though the results were perhaps not as contagious as originally intended, it was still viable: the infected transformed into Bogsneaks, and their saliva became a bright neon green that, when ingested, would spread the mutagen. Bilesneaks can pose a bit of an issue to hives, as their bile is potentially infectious and may have some unwanted effects on drones. If assimilated, their assimilation fluid may retain some of these odd, transformative properties. It probably won't be long until a hive figures out a way to twist this to their advantage...

EFFLUVIAL CROWS
> DESIGNATION: MODERATELY DANGEROUS
> LARGE DRONES RECOMMENDED FOR EASE OF ASSIMILATION
A unique sect of Wildclaw-esque creatures originating from the Plaguelands, Crows come in many different colors and types, though the most common of them are experienced combatants with a militarized culture and highly-infectious talons. They are difficult for hives to take down on account of their fighting skill, though, like Gladebeasts, capture and assimilation is far from impossible. An assimilated Crow would boast a variety of abilities depending on what type of Crow it was, but regardless, it would almost certainly become a dangerously effective member of the hive.

CRYSTAL BOTTLES
> DESIGNATION: AVERAGE, MAY HAVE BENEFICIAL TRAITS AS DRONES
> USEFUL
Alchemically altered Faes who resemble crystalline potion-bottles, these small dragons bear large, capsule-like organs that enable them to store various liquids within themselves. As organic creatures, they can be assimilated, and their capsule often remains with them even as drones. This makes them easy catches for those looking for assimilator or archer drones.

MOTHWINGS
> DESIGNATION: AVERAGE, MAY HAVE BENEFICIAL TRAITS AS DRONES
> USEFUL
A strange mutated strain of dragonkind with a predisposition towards insect-like behavior and colony living, Mothwings may find themselves at odds with the hive, who finds their behavioral quirks useful for drone unity and hive maintenance. Although their numbers are not widespread enough to paint a huge target on their backs, some hives have discovered their usefulness. It won't be long before word spreads.

CHANGELINGS
> DESIGNATION: AVERAGE, MAY HAVE BENEFICIAL TRAITS AS DRONES
> NATURALLY AVOIDANT OF HIVES, EXTRA EFFORT REQUIRED FOR ASSIMILATION
These strange, shapeshifting beings share many similarities to drones in their preference for insect-like behavior, particularly in the hive-building business. This natural predisposition will often continue even past assimilation, ensuring their place as highly efficient and obedient drones. However, due to their particular dietary requirements, they are often found lurking deep within draconic society, not out in the wilds where most assimilation victims are found. As such, it is rare for them to be assimilated, and though they provide some benefits over standard draconic stock when it comes to drone quality, it is often not enough of an advantage to push hives to hunt them down intentionally.

BLOODBIRDS
> DESIGNATION: MILDLY DANGEROUS, MAY HAVE BENEFICIAL TRAITS AS DRONES
> USEFUL, CAUTION REQUIRED WHEN TRACKING AND ASSIMILATING
These aggressive, blood-colored Gaolers wander the world in nomadic bands. Larger and sturdier than their ice-aligned brethren, Bloodbirds retain their size and ferocity as drones, making them useful as guards and heavy lifters. Assimilated Bloodbirds retain their inborn capacity to spread disease. While this doesn't pose an issue for the hivemind, they can still infect dragons, and they can severely weaken dragons by contaminating wounds with their saliva. As most of the tasks that they excel at can be performed with equal proficiency by standard larger drones such as Ridgebacks, Guardians, and Imperials, Bloodbirds are not aggressively sought out for assimilation. However, an opportunistic hive would be hard-pressed to pass up on the opportunity if a band of Bloodbirds happened to be wandering through their territory.

THE OXIDIZED
> DESIGNATION: DANGEROUS WITHIN HOME FLIGHT; IDEAL TARGETS OUTSIDE OF IT
> ASSIMILATE ONLY OUTSIDE OF HOME FLIGHT
Coatls with a particularly strong affinity for their flight of hatching. The purest Oxidized are invariably bound to the element of fire, and within the region of the Ashfall Waste, possess a powerful magical affinity that makes them as unpredictable to assimilate and control as primal-eyed dragons. When deprived of the ability to absorb latent magics from their surroundings - such as being moved into another Flight's territory - they become significantly weakened, making assimilation trivially easy. Oxidized traveling outside the bounds of their own Flight should utilize extra caution. Many hives would leap at such a golden opportunity to acquire a new drone.

EMBEROIDS
> DESIGNATION: MODERATELY DANGEROUS, MAY HAVE BENEFICIAL TRAITS AS DRONES
> LARGE DRONES RECOMMENDED FOR EASE OF ASSIMILATION
These war-forged robots excel in the art of destruction. Built for combat, not only are they physically sturdy, but their signature feature is their ability to store and spray a red-hot, lava-like fluid at their opponents. As purely mechanical constructs, they are entirely immune to assimilation fluid; however, their minds are still vulnerable to various forms of hacking and may be tuned to a hive's wavelength to be controlled by a consciousness. Their offensive skills make them equally difficult to capture and valuable as drones. While proper assimilation will require much trial and error on the part of a consciousness, may hives may consider the ordeal worth it for what they stand to gain from having such a powerful combatant on their side.
