TOPIC | Nonaesthetic Dragon Lair Order (+ Lore)
Hi!

I've just spent an unsuccessful hour trying to think of a new way to rearrange my lair. Unlike most people on this site, too much matchiness bothers me. I'd rather do something that has some sort of logical order: for most of my time here on FR, my lair has been organized by the Flightrising year. Now that my lair has somewhat stabilized with dragons I enjoy, the lair order is beginning to bore me.

So... How do you (nonaeshetic types) order your lair?

Do you have a way of determining who is your lair leader / advisors / warriors / laymen? (My hour of failed lair ordering had a lot to do with trying determine roles.)

I'd love to see some and get some ideas!

My Lair/Hibernal Den Order isn't complete (I haven't bought all the right tabs yet!) but one day I plan to have a different tab for each 'area' of my Clan's territory, and the dragons who live in that area will be in the corresponding tab. I have 6 areas so far but may split those down into sub-sections at some point later. I have four tabs 'done' so far across my Lair and Hibernal Den - The Tower, The Medium, The Blue Plinth and the Ancient Sanctum. (These are all fandragon related but I'm going to have non-fandragon tabs too one day.) I don't have a particular order within each tab beyond the order I got the dragons, combined with keeping romantic pairs together (sometimes vertically because I'm used to 5 dragons per line). I will probably change this once I get all the tabs I want, though I haven't determined how yet! [s]It'll probably be based on favouritism.[/s] I tend to know when I'm buying a dragon (or when I decide to keep them) what their role is and that's part of why I decide to keep them. However, with some it depends on how I dress them, what accent goes on them, etc. For example, when I decided to keep Nathra (Spiral F), I didn't have a plan - but I did have some the Highnoon Brimmer and Spurs, and once I put her in those I knew immediately that she wrangled familiars. It was a similar story with Mimir (Fae M) - the moment I put him in this combination of Steampunk and Corsair's Seaspray apparel, he was instantly a pirate. (He then developed into a smuggler over time.) I find that apparel can help a lot when you're trying to decide on a dragon's role and individual lore. On a similar theme, Einmyrir became my Clan's resident Arcanist worshipper because his tertiary is Rose. I didn't love that when he first hatched, but I knew I wanted to keep all of my progenitors' offspring - even this horrible Crimson/Emerald/Rose baby. I decided to give him Gembond and that the pink gems were an outward symbol of his loyalty to the Arcanist/a blessing from his god (or at least, that's how he sees them!) and his story grew from there. So genes, even/especially "unfortunate" genes like his, can also help you to determine what a dragon does in your clan. For example, maybe you have a dragon with a greenish Smirch gene who gets it from constantly burrowing through undergrowth in search of mushrooms! Maybe you have a dragon that would be camouflaged underwater who does all the fishing.

Hey, it's great to see you again! ^^ Let me see if I can help~

So... How do you (nonaeshetic types) order your lair?
The dragons in my Main Lair are there according to when I acquired them. Regius, for example, has been in my lair the longest (with the exception of the progens, who are in the HD).

I always keep dragons next to their mates, so when I acquire a mate for a dragon later on, I move them into the next slot. An example: Currently, Gyordan and Neira, who are siblings and hatched together, are beside each other. If I decide to get a mate for Gyordan, I'll move them next to him, and they'll replace Neira as the 10th dragon in the Main Lair.

This arrangement doesn't apply to my HD, though -- there dragons are just there according to when I tossed them in.

Do you have a way of determining who is your lair leader / advisors / warriors / laymen?
In my case, this is pretty haphazard and isn't related to lair arrangement. When I get an adult dragon, I take some time to dress them, and oftentimes this helps me determine their personality and/or clan role. I may later give them a new outfit, which might also lead to them getting a career change.

If I'm really stumped, I drop them into headcanon threads and let other players help me. xD

Okay now don't go looking at my lair because in fact nothing is truly organized in any way, currently...

But while personally I love looking at aesthetic lairs, it's near impossible for me because my dragons don't have a cohesive aesthetic anyway & even if I tried to do it best I could that would mean seperating dragons I don't want to seperate.

So I need my progens at the start of my lair, because anything else bothers me, which is why my first page (someday it'll probably be tabs instead of pages) is the core family of the clan. This currently means my progens their daughters + their grandkid.

Mates of those will probably not join the tab.

Everything else isn't sorted as I told, but I plan on sorting by locations. My clan is rather scattered, some live even secluded, some share certain locations - so that's how I'll organize, roughly.

My lair definitely doesn't have a cohesive aesthetic. I have four main tabs relating to different parts of my (mostly non-written and WIP) lore, and I sorted my dragons into which of the four they fit into best. Like some others have said, a lot of this is dependent on how they're dressed--the floofy pretty ones are dancers/entertainers, the fancy ones belong to the court, etc.

As far as actually organizing the pages, I have a rule that the dragons on the ends have to face inward. I am very, very OCD about this. (Thankfully WCs kind of face both ways, I can justify them being on either end.)

I keep wondering if I should reorganize and put all my best (G1's, etc) right up front where everyone can see them instead of scattering them across four tabs, but for now this is what makes sense to me!

If you ever figure it out do let me know because my goodness is this a mood.

So far I've figured out I like to have dragons that alternate, so I'll have a line of snappers that male, female, male, female, male or a line that's like snapper, bogsneak, snapper, bogsneak, snapper and I like the dragons on the left to be facing the right and the dergs on the right facing the left..
I also prefer to keep my G1s together at the top of the page.

I don't bother with roles for my dragons they're a ragtag group so their lore tends to be pretty individual and they're all a bit more 'fend for yourself' types.

I'm pretty sure I don't have a specific aesthetic, but I do have developed some kind of order along the way... Mostly to keep a firmer grip on all the breeding projects I've picked up over the latest year, but also because I kept getting new dragons, that made my pages seem to overflow.

In the beginning I sorted the pages somewhat by colour, now it's a mixture between breeding projects minor lore stuff and colour. A few is sorted by breed, since I have an obsession with imps and gaolers. It helps very much that you can add descriptions to the tabs too. Certainly makes it easier to remember what page number I decided to put the 'blue dragons' and whatnot.

My lair order definitely looks like a mess to anyone but me hahaha but the order is something I spent awhile on actually!

It's organized by relationships more than anything! Dragons are generally next to their friends/lovers/neighbors!

My lair starts with my progen family (Tarragon/Moraine, their children, children's partners, and Tarragon's brother!) and then goes to other higher-ups in the clan! Dragons who have been in the clan since the beginning or else just have an important position (or are important in my heart haha). The third and fourth row revolve around my lair's cuisine! Chefs and farmers c: (and the fifth row is just more important dragons i wanted on the first page haha)

The subsequent pages are a bit more chaotic (pretty loosely you can assume further pages contain newer arrivals to the clan! everything still is organized by relationships for the most part) The third page contains most of my more holiday-themed dragons, and the fourth page acts as my nursery, with caretakers and children residing there c: except the bottom two rows which are dragons i've picked up since my big lair reorganization at the end of last year

My organization is a bit odd, especially because possibly the majority of my dragons are temporary, and I've got a mix of permas who are pretty, and permas who are lore dragons. But the basic logic is like this.

Lair:
First tab: permas who are out of the den for some reason. Mainly my coli team, although the mate of one of them is there semi-permanently because I like them being together.

Second tab: dragons for breeding, organized by project, with permas I breed on the first page

Third tab: just stuff I haven't sorted, new dragons I'm working on, dragons on HD cooldown, dragons in CRs, permas I haven't put into the den yet for Reasons, etc

Fourth tab: out out out

Den:
First tab: dragons I have because they're pretty, organized roughly by color (which is difficult because I have very few monochromatic dragons)

Second tab: the alleged lore clan, although very little of the lore is written. Organized roughly geographically; first page is core clan members (generally the ones I've had the longest but not necessarily), second is just general population, third page is those who spend a lot of time in workshops/labs that would be separated from the main clan for safety reasons, last page is dragons who aren't directly in the main body of the clan but are associated with it. Within pages, organization varies. In general, dragons I like the most/have had the longest come first, and dragons with strong connections are put next to each other.

Third tab: dragons I'm theoretically working on (either lore or just in general), who haven't been sorted yet, etc; basically the same as in the lair

Fourth tab: dragons bought for breeding projects but not currently being used; pages organized by project

Fifth tab: dragons for my primary focus breeding project, because it's easier to move them in and out when there's a dedicated tab for it, rather than moving them to the right page every time

Sixth tab: pretty dragons I don't want and am trying to give away

So, basically my organization is mainly practical because I've got a mix of a lot of different stuff going on in my lair.

But within my lore permas (which it sounds like what you're really interested in), order is mainly by roles and where you're most likely to find them. As for how I determine their roles, it's hard to say; I don't generally add dragons to my clan unless I have some idea of what they're up to first and how they fit in (that's part of why the third tab exists).

Maybe think of roles that need to be filled, and then decide which dragons fit them best?

Also having tabs and pages and the den makes me so happy because I couldn't have this level of organization before and I'm the sort of person who has folders inside of folders inside of folders

oh man i wish i could help but i'm in the same boat, spent a good long while last night screaming in frustration at my lair. i try to go for a combination of form & function, i like my dragons to look good next to each other, but i don't like them to match perfectly cause i find that kinda boring. here's how i've got things organized right now:

LAIR: more functional than aesthetic, constantly changing
- tab for progens, who are the clan leaders, coli fighters, and other important dragons with info in their bios that i reference regularly, and therefore need to access easily right at the top of my lair.
- tab for WIP lore permas, to be dumped into the den when they're finished
- tab for misc. dragons and WIP projects that aren't completed enough to move into the other WIP tab, basic G1s, dragons i'm on the fence about selling, etc.
- tab for active breeding pairs: fodder, projects & lore
- hosting tab for Not My Dragons
- sales & fodder

DEN: more aesthetic than functional, relatively static
- my clan is nomadic and travels between three different regions (hewn city, reedcleft ascent, and cairnstone rest) so there's one tab for each location with finished permas grouped loosely by area of residence/lore/clan role.
- miscellaneous tab for permababies, fandragons, and oddballs who don't fit anywhere else but are definitely keepers

as far as assigning roles, the dragons kinda do that themselves most of the time, but i sorta go through everyone and look at the gaps in the clan. are there enough gatherers? couriers? builders? administrators? healers? warriors? merchants? is there any need that isn't being filled, and if so, who does it make the most sense to fill it? i also generally group dragons by their relationships with each other: mates, families, best friends, coworkers, traveling companions, rivals, etc all tend to stick as close together as can be managed.

another big consideration in lair organization for me is that i like to see all my dragons at once, and not have to click around a bunch to find them. for a long time i had all my permas on one page in my den, but pages max out at 60 and at this point i have like 65 permas and it would've bugged me to have just a few spilling over onto another page. hence, breaking things up by location. not sure how i like it yet though, so i've either gotta get rid of a few permas or find a new organizational system...
