I run a mythology-themed hatchery and finally got around to finding a Poseidon
I originally planned on having capsule as his tert (bc... Poseidon, water... capsule is basically liquid sloshing around a dragon...) but the dragon I found has opal.

Now, I think he'd look better with capsule:

and it'd make for more consistently good-looking hatchlings, his mate also has opal, and opal can get pretty wild color-wise.
but part of me has trouble replacing opal for a lower rarity gene, thoughts?

and it'd make for more consistently good-looking hatchlings, his mate also has opal, and opal can get pretty wild color-wise.

For the theme capsule is better option. You have still chance to get opal offspring if his mate has opal. But I do like how the opal pops up on him. From another perspective opal can look like puddles of reflecting water surfaces.

he look pretty either way, tho i personally really like capsule! i think the blueish-purple color goes well with some of the subtle purple in his primary.

I’m voting Capsule. He is breathtaking either way. Opal is still a possibility with the breeding, and you’re not taking a huge loss by changing his tert.

I do think capsule looks better on him and is more thematic anyway. for what its worth if you are breeding for yourself, its which offspring you like better the look of that matters, and if its to sell, in my observation, it doesn't seem higher rarity genes actually make a difference in terms of being able to sell the kids for more: new genes only recently released sell for more, and then it all falls to the same price range because lots of dragons, people want different things, etc.

I wouldn't hesitate just because it is a "lower rarity gene". What matters is the concept you have in mind for him and the way you feel he looks better. So I'd definitely go for capsule!

I actually like the Opal better because it adds more variation across his body (also Periwinkle Opal is just A+), but if you want Capsule because it fits the theme better, go for it! It's the reason I use it on shadow primals with a dark tert.
