I have a character I REALLY want to make a fandragon of, but I always struggle with trying to get them to look perfect.
I never know what genes or what breed or even what eye color they should have..
How do you all have a specific process of making fandragons?
I need some legit pointers, because I'm struggling hard.
And how are some people just so GOOD at making them?
Also, I'd love to see final products of your labor intensive fandragons!
I can't guarantee I will know the characters/fandoms, but I appreciate them all the same. (:

I usually have a vague idea of what I want, and then either scry something and go from there, or just dive right into the AH and try to find something that matches that vague idea
Ennard here was done with a vague idea in mind (wanted multigaze + gloom prim, and grabbed the cheapest derg that fit)

Beetlejuice was; saw a dragon in the AH, scried them, they made a good looking fanderg, decided to search for a better combo, then came straight back to that first dragon because of impatience

and then sometimes theres just that moment where I get inspired by someone elses fanderg, look at one of the dragons sitting in my hibden, and now suddenly they're a fanderg;

I made a fandragon of Illidan Stormrage from the Warcraft series.
My thoughts were "I need a dragon with big wings and horns." The female guardian pose seemed best fit for him.
Then, I needed to settle on colors... big purple boi needed a shade of purple. I figured if it was slightly off, it'd be ok, and ultimately settled on Wisteria. The secondary color, I though chocolate looked best. And tertiary color just "had" to be right to represent the tattoos. Smoke gene isn't true tattoos, but its the closest there is.
Thankfully, he needed only one gene. However, with some apparel, I think he came out perfect.

I normally try to come up with a few different scries so that there's a higher chance I'll be able to find something cheap on the AH first, then I go to the dressing room to find some apparel that looks at least vaguely like something the character/person/whatever wears
And then I panic for a month because I can't afford any of the stuff I need
Some of the dragons I spent the most time and/or money on are Gerard Way

I usually start off by scrying exactly what I want. I am very specific about what I want, I usually won't take anything that isn't exact. I keep pics in all their bios if you wanna check them out. For apparel I recommend searching by color in the game database if you don't already.
Obsidian/obsidian/white is super common so I didn't even have to breed this one, just breed change and an eye vial. He was pretty easy to dress, not too many problems with him.

This guy was a bit trickier, Had to get the fleshy look just right. Went through a few different outfits before I settled on this one. You just gotta keep playing with it until you're happy. Also had to use 4 scattersights on him for the eyes.

For me, I like to make my fandragons more symbolic of the character than trying to represent them perfectly. Part of that is that I have a lot of dragons based on characters that don't have canon appearances, but also I think that abstracting a bit is a good way to not get too wrapped up in stuff. My main advice would be to look at the character's color scheme- not just what they wear, but what they're associated with.
What character are you trying to make? What's their personality like? Are there any particularly distinguishing features that you want to represent? What's your budget?
Also, for me I don't usually plan out fandragons beforehand. A lot of my fandragons came about because I was browsing through dragon sales on the AH and saw a dragon with a color scheme that reminded me of a character.

Doof is based off of Dr. Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb. He was a lucky AH find, with both a color scheme that matched the character's taste in invention/home design and the pointy Ridgeback nose.

My 17776/20020 dragons are respectively a Fae, a Mirror, and an Imperial to represent the relative sizes of the satellites they're based on, and also match the color schemes of their characters.

Dirk is mostly themed around his yellow outfit, but also has the animals from Season 1 climbing around on him and a sneaky little reference to Project Blackwing.

The roses on Nureyev (and Juno!) are there to represent the "Duke and Dahlia Rose" aliases. He's a Nocturne to represent that he's a con artist, and really the only part of him based on the art is his glasses.
Overall, my advice would be to figure out a general range of colors that you want for the character and start browsing. You may find something that works even better than if you were planning them out in advance!

I wouldn't really consider myself to be very good at making fan dragons, but I've recently started getting into it! Usually what happens for me is I get inspired for a certain character first and then I make them. Sometimes it can be an apparel piece that reminds me of them, sometimes a gene combo, sometimes a skin, etc.
For example, here's my current WIP. I have everything I need and I'm just waiting for the hatchling to grow up. I had the general colors in mind, and I knew I wanted a male ridgeback, so I entered in the color ranges I wanted and found him on the AH. Sometimes I end up having to start a breeding project like I did with this one or at least change the breed/genes, but this time I got lucky.

I'm turning this guy into the Boogieman from Gorillaz. What inspired me to make him was how nice the plague masks fit with the character. It's not the flashiest fan dragon, and far from my most expensive, but I think it works well as is!

Usually, my process has been coming up with at least a basic idea of the general outfit I want, then pulling up the AH, narrowing down what breeds/genes/color ranges I think would suit the character’s aesthetic, and browsing until I find something that I think suits the character and the outfit I have in mind for them. It’s a lot easier than trying to breed/find something super-specific, at least in my opinion!
I also really enjoying adding little stuff to the outfits based on the character’s personality/hobbies/pets c:
