Heh, well, sadly, that is part of it. I've had a single breeding project for over 8 months. Granted, some of my color ranges are out there (mostly due to funds, space, etc) but that's part of doing a breeding project. Sometimes, the RGN is wonderful... most times, it is a sad thing XD There's a couple ways to approach it. You just keep breeding them until you get the colors, or you pick the closest bab you can get, and then look for a mate. You just keep doing that until you get what you want.
