What is Mafia?

If you already know what mafia is, great! You can feel free to skip this post. If not, I'll do my best to explain what mafia is and how to play.

Mafia is a game that is also known as werewolf, and is a popular party game adapted for forum use. It is a social deduction game, which is also an intense psychological game of paranoia, lies, and deception. The central theme of mafia is a liar's game, and to find the liars. In a game (and almost every game), a small group of mafia seek to kill the town, who wish to lynch the mafia before this happens. This is the core concept of the game: an informed minority, the mafia, against an uninformed majority, the town.

The game of mafia is split into two phases. During the Day phase, players are allowed to interact with one another and talk in the thread. This phase of the game is when most social interaction occurs, and players in the game come to a consensus on who to lynch at the end of the day. Everyone votes, and the player with the most votes is lynched.

During the Night phase, players are not allowed to talk in the thread, but players with special abilities (known as power roles) are allowed to use their ability to their advantage. This phase is also when the mafia are allowed to use their factional night kill ability to remove a player from the game.

The mafia wins when they overpower the town. Town wins when all mafia-aligned players are removed from the game. Town players want to identify potential town teammates and mafia enemies during both the day phase and the night phase, while mafia want to appear as towny as possible to avoid being lynched.

The game of mafia was created in 1986 by Dmitry Davidoff, a teacher in the USSR. It was designed for his high school students to learn about psychology, and has since been adapted for forum use on hundreds of sites.

Game Information

This game follows the setup C9++, a semi-open setup for 13 players on the MafiaScum wiki. It is a setup that has the largest number of possible combinations, as the setup is determined by randomizing 7 numbers between 1-100 (repeats allowed) that correspond to a letter. The different numbers of each letter correspond to different roles available in the setup, with the remaining number of players becoming Vanilla Townies. Together, there are 11 different roles in a huge variety of setups. The more powerful the town gets, the more powerful the mafia becomes as well.

Possible Roles and Abilities
Town Advisor: Answer questions in the thread and help players learn scumhunting techniques. Is killed off on Day 3.
Cop: Investigate a player and discover their alignment.
Doctor: Protect a player from a kill.
Vigilante: Kill a player.
Innocent Child: A player who is confirmed town at the beginning of the game.
Mason: One of a pair (or, in some setups, trio) who know their partner is town. They may speak to each other in a private chat.
Vanilla Townie: No ability beyond their vote and their voice.

Roleblocker: Stop a player from taking their action. Can be town OR mafia.

Mafia Advisor: May answer questions in the thread, but is not required to. Will help the mafia strategize in their private chat. Is killed off on Day 3.
Godfather: Appears as town upon investigation.
Mafia Goon: No ability beyond their vote and their voice, but they may perform the Night Kill.
Serial Killer: May kill a player each night, and is either Investigation Immune (shows as town on investigation) or 1-Shot Bulletproof (cannot be killed by night kill).

For the Cop, Doctor, Vigilante, and Town Roleblocker: Each of these may be a 1-Shot ability, meaning that it can be used only one time during the entire game. There may also be multiples of all town roles, some of which can be regular nightly and some 1-Shot.

If an ability is not a 1-Shot, it can be used every night as long as it is submitted.

Important Mechanics in the Game
--Serial Killer may choose between Investigation Immune or 1-Shot Bulletproof protection prior to game start.
--Cops are guaranteed to be sane, and receive results as Town or Anti-Town.
--The Innocent Child is revealed at the start of the game by the mod.
--Doctors prevent 1 night kill per use.
--Mafia roleblocker may not kill AND block a player in the same night.
--There is no distinguishing flavor between night kills (a Vigilante kill will not be different from a Serial Killer kill or the Mafia kill).

Win Conditions
Town wins when all players who cannot win with Town are eliminated and at least one member of town remains alive.
Mafia wins when they match or outnumber all players who cannot win with Mafia, or when nothing can prevent this from occurring.
