An earnest and hopeful set of dragons looks back at her. Saphira takes a tentative step forward. The hermit looks at you for another long moment. Then she pulls back her hood. “We are Chrysoidine. We are most impressed with your character. We have decided we will help you with the knowledge you seek.” You look at your companions excitedly. Claws of Diamond and Saphira look relieved. “The spell of which you seek requires a blade of iron, forged in the light of a fallen star. You must pierce the skin of the dragon with it, and then you must shine a light through a diamond without flaw and speak an incantation. We know the incantation to finish the spell. And we will speak it for you when the time requires it, if you should give us the honor of accompanying you.” For the first time, you see the hint of a smile. “We have another item that will be helpful to you.” She reaches into a trunk and pulls out a small box. She opens it and you peer inside. A small ball of light sparkles within. Noore gasps, “Is that ... a star?” “Yes. A star fallen on a mountain top. We fetched it many years ago. Now make haste.” ——— You finally reach the outskirts of Alexandrite in the early afternoon. There’s a large group camped a few Windsinger’s lengths outside the gates. You wander through dragons setting up small tents all around you. They’re dressed in bright clothing and everyone moves with a certain degree of haste. They peer at you curiously as you walk through. Towards the end of the run of tents you find a couple dragons standing around and pointing at tents. “Come on now, they won’t build themselves! Come on, let’s keep to the deadlines! No reason to let a little slip up set us back.” Saphira look around in wonder and beckons a dragon towards her. “Tell me, what is happening in this town.” There is a pause as the dragon stares at her in wonder, then they run off to tell the others what they have seen. “Princess!” “The princess is here!” “She’s here!” The commotion ripples through the crowd until the whole group is standing before you. The dragons huddle together for a moment, then from the huddle a dragon wearing a sequined jacket and top hat emerges. “Princess, we apologize that due to the current state of the city you are unable to enjoy our carnival as it was intended. However, we would be honored to be able to present to you a private show of our performers’ many talents, if it would please your majesty.” Saphira looks delighted. You can see Claws of Diamond give up on trying to stop her before he even starts. “That would be amazing!” she says. Immediately, several performers whisk your group into a nearby tent. For a few minutes there is a flurry of activity as dragons set up props and equipment all around you. Then, suddenly the arena in front of you is empty, save for a bogsneak in a sequined jacket and hat. He stands quietly for a moment, then flings open his wings and gestures all around him. “Dragons of all ages! I invite you to join us on a magical adventure with Twist and Turn and The Amazing Acrobat Troop!” The next hour passes in a blur of amazing feats and amusing performances. A couple of ridgebacks balance on a rope far above your heads. A bunch of hainu perform a coordinated dance routine under a trainer’s watchful eye. A coatl archer masterfully hits a series of targets while holding the bow with his tail. A pearlcatcher wearing a comically oversized hat and a ridgeback wearing a comically tiny hat do a comedy routine involving a pair of incompetent alchemists. (Giode likes that one a lot.) A fae swallows an entire sword and removes it unharmed, then balances a full dinnerware set on his tail. The main event is Twist and Turn themselves, a pair of spirals juggling no less than 12 balls, 3 lit torches, and a hainu between them. Saphira watches the whole thing joyfully, laughing and clapping loudly with every performance. Noore grumbles something about “commoner entertainment,” but you still see him crack a smile every so often. Finally, the performers take their final bows and you cheer loudly. As you emerge from the tent, to your surprise a few carnival games have been set up in your honor. The ringmaster looks a bit sheepish as you step outside, “Sorry we can’t set everything up. This is all we could do in time. Feel free to play as much as you’d like, though!” Your companions scatter among the booths. Giode and Chrysoidine both look with interest at a booth filled with small clay figurines. “Pick a figurine, if there’s a flight symbol on the bottom, you win a prize! Try your luck, ladies.” Looks like you have some time to enjoy the carnival.
