I get that shiny colours can have some hue variation, but why does it in some species/colours go from two wildly different colours in such a way that I have to click on the dragon's info to see what's its primary. ;w;
The primary on this is orange. How am I supposed to see that. Yeah, the head looks orange, but the torso looks sand-ish/goldenrod-ish, and the tail looks avocado.

Not entirely a rant, I'm just sometimes bewildered by Iridescent.

Yeah... oranges and blacks are particular culprits.
I think the issue with oranges is down to this - have you ever tried to use a 'dark orange' colour in digital art? It looks rotten, specially if you're in the yellower ones. So, I think other tones had to be used, and in the half-dozen yellow to orange colours it gets difficult to produce so many distinctly different shading schemes. Hence bizarre variations!
While I don't always like the effect, I'm not sure how it could be remedied :/

The only rational explanation is that the color "orange" is actually in reference to the fruit and the Iridescent color shine is depicting the gradual ripening of an orange, hence the shades green.
Hm, yes.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe I saw Undel say somewhere on the forums (I think it was a suggestion thread about changing obs iri) that the iridescent gene is basically made by layering a rainbow gradient of some sort on top of the original color and then adjusting it some so that it looks decent. I think that's where the crazy color variation comes from. But again, I'm not 100% sure that's how it's done so take what I say with a pinch of salt.
(Also, if you image google "iridescent orange" you can see that some fabrics have a slight green-ish tint in certain lighting. Nothing as bright as our little coatl friend here, but that might also explain the color choices.)

Iridescence is by definition a rainbow-like color shift, and not just a shininess property! It makes sense that oranges would shift into green... but it's kind of a shame that the green is so overwhelming. o_x

While I sympathize with your point, I just want to say that that Coatl is awesome. It looks like some sort of tropical bird.

Khadjin - I'm like super tempted to remove the iri
but no other genes would be plain enough to stick on him
Eh.
I dislike the pink butt though. ;_; Your girl is pretty though! But pink tail indeed.

I feel that so hard on the Orange. Fire is one of my favorite colors but I'd never have it as a primary because of this. Makes a nice secondary though, so I'll stick to that.
