I never really thought of them as unsettling, though they are really fluffy on the familiar, which looks interesting (though I'd probably think they were unsettling if I wasn't obsessed with vultures, aha). And aaa yes they are so cute! I hope I scavenge one soon.
I don't really know what they do--maybe keep dirt out their eyes?--but this is what they look like on the animal I believe they are based off off, the bearded vulture. Their eyebrow fluff is a bit coarser I think.

@ComatoseLuna Fleshy growths that the males of some bird species have hanging from the head/neck areas. Not pretty.
