TOPIC | Boarding Service Price?
1 2
Hi friends! I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on something.

Once I get more lair spaces I'm going to use my liar as a boarding service. Nothing too complicated, just a place for people to temporarily send their dragons if they're low on space. I would simply keep the dragons fed as well as bond with familiars if the player wants that.

So my question is: How much per day should I charge? It technically wouldn't cost me anything considering that food can just be gathered. I was thinking even just 100t so that I can make some money for future lair expansions.
If dragons are sent with a familiar, any money earned from them will be subtracted from the cost. (Chests and items, etc. will be sent back with the dragon.)

So, what do you all think I should charge?

@westrivergirl it would be more than that, and you bonding with familiars doesn't do anything for them. You can't bond with someone else's familiars. (You bonding with them would only bond them to your account- not to the renters)

I would charge at least 7kt a week- or 1kt per day. This would more than cover the cost of food, and gives plenty of profit for your projects.
My rate is probably way off though, so I'd wait for someone who regularly uses boarding services to confirm a good price.

@Shinyumbreon

Ooh, fair point about familiars, I hadn't thought about that.

Yeah, that makes sense. Only thing is that I'm not planning on doing any projects. My only cost would be the liar expansions.

I will take all that into consideration though. Thanks!

@WestRiverGirl

When I board (through the Arcane organization), I'm paid 500t per dragon, per day, and enough food items to feed each boarder.

A quick search of "boarding" in the Items for Sale Forum, gave me two shops that posted in the last month. (By the way, the Items for Sale forum is used for all services for sale as well, like your store's future thread!). I don't know how many customers each shop gets.

The Dragon Bed and Breakfast charges 300t and 7 food points per day, per dragon.

The Thunder Clash Inn charges 5kt per dragon, per day, with a discount when you use their service for the first time.

Obviously, pricing is up to you, but setting your prices higher is certainly a possibility. In fact, I highly suggest you do, especially if you're going to make this your main source of income (or even your main source of funding lair expansions), because they get really expensive, really fast. You can check out this calculator for planning.

I'd also like to suggest that you don't depend on your gathering turns to feed your boarders, for two reasons. Digging/Scavenging don't give food, but they give chances for valuable chests (Digging) or unhatched eggs (Scavenging), and spending turns there regularly can be worth it. Additionally, your gathering items are at the mercy of the random generator, and it's easy to end up with too little food. If you don't want to buy food from other players in the AH when that happens, either charge your customers food points and treasure, or get food in the Coliseum. There are plenty of Coliseum guides in the Guides section of the forum, but if any of them are complicated/overwhelming, PM me. I can simplify it.

One last thing: dragons with attached familiars can't be sent to other players (via Crossroads or the Auction House) or exalted. While customers can detach the familiars and send them to you as well, I wouldn't recommend it. Familiar information is attached to your account, not to the familiar. If their familiar is at the "Companion" stage and they send it to you, you'll start at whatever level you are with that familiar (possibly even the "Wary" stage, which has little reward). (This does have the benefit of allowing you to sell a familiar, buy another one later, and not have to start from scratch.)

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Edit: I started typing this before @/shinyumbreon, so sorry for the duplicate information about familiars! (and I forgot to ping... and proofread.)

I agree that 1kt or 1g per day is a fair price. I used to board dragons a lot, and that’s how much most users paid me.

Agree with all of the above!

Also, not to be a downer, but you should probably also set up a policy on how long you are going to hold dragons and what to do if it appears that a boarder has gone inactive for worst-case scenarios - what are you going to do with dragons whose owners disappear off the face of Sornieth and stop paying you? A grace period? Exalt? Sold?

You WILL need some kind of policy or you will end up with someone loading dragons onto you and then leaving them there for whatever reason. Happens often enough and then the people holding onto them run a panic trying to contact the lost user for months before fearfully exalting them so that they can play again. Usually for the ex-owners to turn up ages after and having the gall to be angry about the exaltation.

@quinnelope

Thanks for the advice!
I really don't want to have them give me food but I get that I will need to have more than what I can gather. I'll be sure to look into all that. Thanks!

@DrowsyPanda @Ismaiel

Ooh true. I honestly can't believe I didn't think of that before. XD I'll be sure to look into that for sure. I'll probably just look at other organization's policies. Thank you both!

That is not the best way to earn. Honestly gathering , brewing, familiar bonding will make a lot more. If you coli even more. It will take a long time and soon lair space will be so much you will not really make any profit.

Selling food can make lots of money by the way.

This doesn't seem very profitable to get into tbh. You're wasting your gathering turns feeding someone else's dragons, and you could be using each of those slots to earn far more than 1kt a day. It will be even less worth your time when you're paying over half a million just to free up 5 slots.

I suppose it has appeal in that it's a mostly passive way to earn income, although just speaking for myself I'd rather spend an hour a day in the coli than dealing with other people who might not pay or might just dump dragons off on me and vanish. Or having spaces taken up when I turn out to suddenly really need them.
