Could a dragon, theoretically, change their element?
Be it by some forbidden magic or tampering of the magic that makes up their essence?
Perhaps if a dragon who isn't very magical in the first place goes into another region and somehow absorbs the magic coming off of that region itself they could potentially change elements?
I know this isn't very likely canon-wise, but if by the off chance it could happen, how would you think it could come to be?

They'd most likely die if they attempted to do it. Dragons are too linked to their elemental powers to be able to sever themselves from it

Consider this, it was said by the admin that an egg without any elemental god's blessing (ie, imbued with an element when egg), it won't hatch at all. The elemental energy/magic of a dragon is like the life essence of a dragon, without it they will die, and changing it will certainly be catastrophic as well (anyway it was confirmed by admin also that a dragon will most likely die undergo such transformation).

My dragon Hellebore's lore is that she has been blessed with runes on her body that allow her to tap into Shadow magic, being a Wind dragon originally, but at terrible personal cost. It taps into her life energy to use it and she'll likely die an early death because of it.

I like the idea for lore but it would never be a game mechanic
Like if a dragon had something so dramatic happen, perhaps while exalted, it would lose it's life essence and absorb whatever is around it
