Have weird arg users been a thing around here? This is the first time i've seen one, but it seems like they've happened at least once before based on people's reactions..

also apologies for interacting with them, didn't know we shouldnt :(

@Kazucrow
There was one big one a fair few months back (heated water tower) then an absolute plague of the things for a while. It'd fortunately died down until just now, although I believe there's a discord server for them.

@Bananacorn

I wish that arg thread from earlier wasn't deleted so I could copy paste but oh well

ARG stands for Alternate Reality Game.

Basically a game you play using the real world. Sounds simple but it's a bit more complex. The difference between standard games and ARGs is that the game is based around player actions and responses. So usually the next plot steps and points are created based on what the 'players' are finding or if they've managed to do x or y, etc.

The way I've usually seen them done (although there are tons of different ways to go about them) is like... there's a hidden file on X site. People find it and work (either together or alone) to decode it. It leads them to the next things (be it another site, same site, phone numbers, places, etc), rinse and repeat. Usually with some ongoing narrative to tie everything together, although there have been ones with little to no narrative.

There was a large scale multi-entity one surrounding the release of Portal 2 if you wanted a specific example to look up.

The Wiki entry actually lists a lot more information but that's the sum of it. That and it's got tons of examples. Arg's are somewhat common as marketing techniques too since they're incredibly engaging.

On FR I've never really followed them. They seem to just be stuff like... Be Cryptic --> Get weirded out responses --> React to weirded out responses --> rinse and repeat. But it's probably deeper than that. Since I'm not 'playing' I probably don't see any of the extra stuff.

I feel like ARGs could have a niche in like, forum games. There's too many cryptic posts that are just really gibberish-y tho.

Imagine spending your precious life force constructing an ARG to play out on this particular website of all places, lol.

I could see them being fun and interesting if they were more than just spam threads posted 'because memes and args'

Like the few I've read up about or been a part of were awesome! The ones on FR just seem to be gibberish-esc text or spam picture threads with little actual substance present.

Like they seem to be less 'game' and more just spam
