just genuinely curious, do you thank artists for their work after receiving a piece (an edit, lore, painting/sketch/drawing, etc.)? Even if you paid them for it or got it for free? do you also tip if you can afford it? why or why not? what's your overall disposition to artists? are you an artist yourself?

just wondering!

Yes, just like I thank all people who provide a service. Plumber, barista, artist, it doesn't matter to me. It's polite to thank people!

I do tip because most of the time artists exceed my expectations. Even if they don't as long as I'm completely satisfied I'll leave at least a little tip.

I respect artists. They've put thousands of hours into their craft and provide an incredible service, they deserve respect! I'm a professional musician myself so I understand some of the struggles they face.

Absolutely!!
If you bought a cup of coffee, it's simply polite to thank the person who made/handed it to you.
It's the same for art. Even though you purchased it, you should still show your gratitude when they complete it! A "thank you" is basically saying "I got my monies worth and I appreciate your effort". Not saying thank you is rather rude- having experienced this myself as an artist, I can say that not saying thank you has made me feel like I did a poor job and they were upset with the outcome.

Tips are a bit different. I hardly have money to spare, and buying the comm typically takes away whatever I had left, so generally I don't tip. Sometimes, if it's really good or I can tell a ton of effort was put into it, I will tip an extra few bucks if able, but generally I don't :,D Not that it isn't worth it though!

I can say, as an artist, the best thing to do is, really, to just say "thank you". It makes us feel like we did our job well! <3

I don't usually buy art but I would like to think that I'd tip? it's not my custom to tip, in fact I think it's a big dangerous where in restaurants owners use this to underpay their workers, but when I remember to I leave a small tip. I thank before or after. sometimes I forget after because I get too excited, so I make sure to thank before.

I'm not an artist, I'm a drawer. I store your socks and occasionally eat a few!

Of course I thank them! They gave me something, so I thank them and tell them how much I appreciate their work. I don't really understand people who don't thank others, tbh. Like, when a barista hands you your drink at a coffee shop, do you just grab it and walk away without a word? You paid them, but you still have to thank them. It's weird not to, right? Idk. I tend to err on the side of being overly polite so it may just be me. For instance, many people don't thank public bus drivers when they get off, but if I'm passing the driver, I always thank them. That doesn't mean the people who don't thank them are rude; they're not interacting with the bus driver, so starting an interaction just to thank them is unnecessary in many people's eyes. I just think it's nice to do, so I do it. When it comes to commissioning artists, though, I think thanking them is only polite. If you're already talking with someone face to face, then a thank-you is a way of acknowledging that your interaction is coming to a close and showing your appreciation for their service. A quick "thanks!" is all it takes, doesn't have to be anything fancy. Also I definitely tip, especially if they're underpriced, which most FR artists (and internet artists in general) wayyyyyyy underprice their work, so I'll add some money until it feels more reasonable. Or even if it's not that underpriced, I add just a small tip as an added show of appreciation. It's the thought that counts. I'm kind of an artist in real life, but a very different kind of artist, and I've never done freelance work. My desire to be polite isn't because I relate to fellow artists, but because I want to be courteous to my fellow human beings. I'm from the US where there's a big tip culture though, so people from other countries may find it more awkward since they're not as used to tipping. @Macchi I hope you live somewhere where tipping isn't standard [emoji=ridgeback scared size=1] Not leaving a tip at restaurants in the US just deprives your waiter of their salary. Restaurants don't make up for lost tips!

Always say thank you when it's not an impersonal transaction. Art is about as far from impersonal as it can get, and in any case, usually one has to talk to the artist to convey the particulars of what one wants.

I tip if something's free.
If there's a set or priorly agreed upon price I pay that exactly. Tipping would make me feel like I'm criticizing their prices? Idk.

@fistfulofdragons I am well aware! I'm not a legal adult yet and as such I don't really have a job either, so I don't go out to eat. I always do try to leave a tip, it's just not in my mind habitually, you see?

I never ordered art here, but I did on other sites for real coinage, and I always tipped and thanked them.

Although I've met an untimely stalemate (only finished two practice pieces digitally, three if you want to count some rushed header art), I do artsies myself from time to time, and I can perfectly relate to how much effort and thought can go into making an image. For me, art that I order is worth more than what I pay for it, so that's just an extra incentive to tip.

As for disposition, I don't really have a pronounced one. I know their struggles so I can respect their work, but I'm missing a link with which to really connect outside of that.

providing arting services myself i really appreciate people sending any kind of reply to my delivery. it makes me really nervous when i dont hear back from them, thinking i sent it to the wrong person or something else went wrong. getting a thank you is just extra (still highly appreciated tho of course!).

thanking people is normal for me, i mean theres a lot of things i wouldnt have or wouldnt be or wouldnt be able to do if other people didnt do what they did, and i like to thank them for it, and i like seeing a (genuine) smile on peoples face after theyve been genuinely thanked. and i like to imagine those smiles on the faces of everybody ive ever bought a piece from.

being from a country where tipping isnt really a common thing, i usually dont tip people, or expect to get tips myself. i expect people to give themselves the rates they think they deserve. of course, theres cases in which ive really loved a piece and and feel the price ive paid for it does not do the piece justice, so i tip in those cases what i feel is appropriate.

@Macchi Ahh, yeah I get a bit confused too when I pay in cash. I prefer paying by card because I can just multiply the total by 1.2 to get the new total, no worrying about whether I have the right bills for it. Technically tipping in cash is better I think but money is hard haha. I’ve definyely forgotten to tip once or twice when paying in cash. Just totally forgot

I just remember my college roommate coming home one night upset because she just worked for hours and got no money for it. A big party took up almost the whole restaurant and then didn’t tip, and that particular restaurant pooled the tips and split them, rather than each server keeping their own table’s. And after the bartenders got their cut, there was nothing left to split among the waiters D: Restaurants are evil sometimes

Anyway this is off-topic haha. Point of the story being, always tip! Haha
