Easier process, though equally as frustrating: try to recreate their outfit in the Dressing Room, then find a dragon that suits the outfit.

My process is to basically flanderize the character in my mind to see what breed has the best match. Chaotic? Spiral. Protective? Guardian. Deadpan? Fae. Uptight? Pearlcatcher. "So basically they're pupy"? Tundra.

Luckily the few fandragons I have were really easy to make/find. And some of them were afterthoughts (I found a cheap gen1, the scry fit the character, bam: new fanderg)

I made a fandragon outfit thread for that reason.

I try to make the breed fit their personality (Or something else if i think that thing is really important? idk) and element fit either their eye color or also personality. I try to make the colors fit them (e.g. if they're human i have a tendency to try and make the secondary match their hair color while still fitting with the rest) but the genes and occasionally outfit are usually the biggest problems

I don't have a hard-and-fast system; for human(oid)s I'll often make their primary and secondary their skin and hair colors respectively, but I've made exceptions for characters with very strongly themed appearances, and sometimes make the secondary part of their clothing instead. Bearded men I usually make Imps or Guardians, but I left out that detail for the sake of making one guy a Spiral because I thought a "snake in the grass" motif was highly appropriate. A feather motif means Skydancers for female characters and Coatls for males; male with a creepy cadaverous face? Can't be anything but a Ridgeback. I think the most clever scry I've come up with is Death from Darksiders: I got his skin, hair, mask, gauntlets and boots all in his coloring alone! don't like my dragons
I'd like to say I've got a system for fandragons at this point, but I really don't. Colors tend to be easy, but breeds... sometimes I look for traits of the character and match them to poses? Like a male character with a sleazy grin makes a good Ridgeback, a smug female character makes a good Bogsneak, an energetic character is a shoe-in for Spiral, Skydancers are thin and twiggy, Wildclaws are fierce... but when there's really no good way to zero in on a breed, try building the outfit first (or the colors/genes!) and see what it looks best on.

Outfits are the hardest part. Either they work really well or they work not at all, and I've had to scrap a few fandragons because I couldn't get a result I recognized.
