TOPIC | The George Paradox
1 2
So let's say we have a guardian. Let's call him George. His charge isn't a living thing, but rather, a library of books. And that library burns down, so he gets very sad. What would happen if that library was then rebuilt? Would George get confused because his charge is back?

Let's say this time, George's charge is a Fae dragon who we'll call Freya. Now, Freya is killed by an Imperial (let's call him Ivan) accidentally stepping on her, and George is very sad again. However, Ivan is actually a necromancer, and revives Freya. What happens to George now, in this rather complicated situation? Is he still very sad because he let his charge down before, or does he become happy again because Freya is back?

Been thinking about this one for a couple days. What do y'all think?

The initial failure is still a failure. The rebuilt library is new materials and new books. The undead Freya is no longer Freya in the original condition. It's like buying a kid a new goldfish while they're at school when their previous one dies.

I've always thought of a guardian's "Charge Urge" like another type of love, different from platonic or romantic or familial. The library he loved is gone entirely, it can't really be replaced so he'll still probably be sad, but maybe less so than when a guardian completely loses their charge. As long as Freya still has her personality he'll still consider her his charge.

I think for the dragon, it would probably stay his charge since it's still physically her. He might retain some guilt for letting her die in the first place though.

For the library I think it depends on whether his charge was the physical library, the specific books, or the concept of the library. For the concept or the building, he would probably maintain the rebuilt library as his charge. If it was the specific contents, he'd probably have lost his charge.

Now if Freya is cloned, and the clone has her exact personality and set of memories and considers herself Freya just as the original does, does George have two charges?

"The original materials are the building" is a Western attitude, "the design/concept is the building" is a more prominent Eastern attitude, so it could easily depend on the guardian's culture. There'd still be some grief over the damage either way but it'd probably be mitigated if the concept is the charge so he can help rebuild it himself.
