TOPIC | How Unlimited Lair Space Would Impact FR
1 2
Hello all,

As someone who loves collecting all sorts of colorful dragons, and is constantly bumping up against my lair space cap, sometimes I think, "It would be nice to have no limit to the number of dragons I can have." Then again, a lair cap does help me be more selective about the dragons I buy and keep, and my lair stays at a manageable size because of it.

My fellow FR players, I would like to hear your thoughts on how you think this game would be impacted if there was no longer any limit on the number of dragons we could own. What good things would come of it? What bad things?

(Please note that I am not calling for a proposal to have unlimited lair space here. I am also not asking for a general opinion on whether it is a good or bad idea. I am asking about how you honestly think it would change this game, if it were to be implemented.)

I look forward to hearing your analyses! :)

Honestly, provided that we'd still pay for lair expansions (Edit: With ridiculously high prices once you're past a certain point), I don't think it would impact FR all that much, except maybe people would be eager to expand their lairs more than they are now. It would be a good treasure sink.
It could be a strain on the servers though if non-exalting people kept all their hatchlings instead of selling them and the hatchlings getting exalted. But then again they'd still need to make money somehow to expand their lairs.

tl;dr Not much, but FR would need bigger/better servers, I guess.

Dragon prices would probably fall like they did when the hibden was released. Not a lot of players would actually break the cap, but the ones that do are probably the kind who already work for max profit so they'd mostly use it for storage.

Also the servers would explode because there'd be too many dragons.

supposing the price of lair expansions kept increasing at a pretty regular rate as it does now, eventually a range would be reached that you literally couldnt afford, unless everyone banded together or spent x amount of irl money to pay for it

They would have to purchase more/better server space, because hunger ticks are probably the biggest strain on the servers and removing the lair cap would multiply that strain. Maybe not right away, but it would be a problem that would only get more severe as time went on. Hibden slots are a way to avoid that strain(so I'd rather see infinite hibden slots if we had to pick), but there's still a lot of bulky data associated with a live dragon that isn't associated with an exalted one, and all that data takes up room and data space has to be paid for.

So if you want more lairspace, contribute to Stormlight Workshop's bottom line :P

Dom battles would get even more expensive. I know that banks have felt the impact of the HD - players can now stock up on over twice as many levelled fodder - and unlimited lair space would make that far worse.

It could kill the dom raffle for good, honestly, or end up with only donating dragons for tickets, or battle raffles could wind up like non-battle raffles and everything is at cost for the receivers there's just a chance at cool prizes.

Hmm, very interesting observations/theories/points you've made so far, everyone.

If you're curious what my opinion is, personally, I don't think we'll ever see absolutely unlimited lair space be a thing on here, due to some of the reasons we've all listed above. But I do imagine that occasional, gradual increases to the lair size cap will continue to occur. And, if a significantly large amount of extra lair space is ever to be granted to us all at once, it will probably be in the Hibernal Den.

I agree, server capabilities are probably one of the biggest factors at play here, limiting the game's ability to support too many active dragons at once. There are also other things to consider, like the game's economy and how dominance functions. I suppose one of the best things we can do, if we ever do wish we could fit more dragons into our lair, is continue to support the game however we can, both financially and otherwise.

i really don't think the servers would be impacted that badly, tbh. exalting is just too good. it's profitable and it's how you win dom. like, even on other pet sites that DON'T have all the incentives to exalt that FR does, people still use the equivalent of the exalt feature quite a bit.

for example, take a look at Wajas. (granted, it's smaller than FR, but i still think it's relevant.) it costs $60k to breed a pair of wajas, and the maximum number of pups they can have is four. OWFing, the equivalent of exalting, gives you $10k per waja and confers no other benefit, so it isn't profitable. the lair expansions are nigh unlimited and are relatively far less expensive. there's no limit to the number of pairs you can breed at once. females are pregnant for five days and can breed immediately after giving birth; males have no breeding cooldown at all. there's an item that can instantly age your pups to adults and make them eligible for breeding. inbreeding is allowed--though it does make a waja far less valuable--so you don't have to check bloodlines if you don't want to. oh, and there's no food system, so it costs nothing to maintain your lair.

all this, and STILL wajas is pretty stable. what's more, an individual waja is far more valuable and easier to sell, relatively speaking, than individual dragon is on FR. i still get annoyed at how worthless dragons are.

honestly, i think FR went way overboard right from the beginning in making it difficult to breed and collect dragons. it seems like they were trying to prevent a server apocalypse that was never going to happen. the hibernal den was a step in the right direction.

I'd be screwed because I'd still be compelled to give every dragon I own a skin.

Also, I've always wanted one dragon of every color. Or even EVERY flight themed lair.

Assuming you mean active lair space that costs the same as it does now, not much effect. Most people don't even get to current max capacity, or want that many dragons. And even if they did, it's expensive to feed all those dragons, which serves as its own cap.

Assuming the lair space was cheap and didn't require feeding the dragons... every consequence of the hibernal den times infinity. Dominance would implode, and hardcore collectors would go berserk.
